Nobody NEEDS another Audi, but....

I wanted one! Needed something more fun to drive that's not my Touareg or in pieces like all of my other projects. So what makes a better winter beater/fun car than a 20vt quattro!

Introducing my new 87 5000CS Turbo Quattro in sapphire!

Has a few problems, mainly a hot start issue. Car starts up and idles perfectly when it's completely cooled and continues until it's turned off. Once it warms up, it will not restart until it's sat for 6+ hours (even immediately after you shut it down). Ran the codes and it came back with 2312 - engine coolant temp sensor. I'm guessing this is the single-wire temp sensor and not the multifunction 4 or 3 pin sensor? I'll probably just replace both. I swapped around crank sensors (came with a few extras) but that didn't change anything nor did an icepack on the sensor so I'm guessing it's not that. Car also seems to have low boost, I can get a max of 1.3 bar in 3rd gear at 4k+rpm. Most of the time it's around 1.1-1.2 and very slow. SJM reading makes me think that some of this could be related to the bad temp sensor. I'll pressure check the intake anyways.

A few "odd" things have been done. It has two batteries, one in the OEM location under the rear seat and one in the trunk. Not sure the reasoning, but I've read mixed thoughts on running dual batteries. There's also been quite a bit of wiring splicing with lots I don't understand. It does look like they added in the modified after-run fan circuit described in the Bentley. It adds an engine bay temp sensor near the front of the motor.

Other than that, it's in great condition. It was definitely owned by an Audi person before the PO I bought it from (she said she bought it in 2011). Timing belt, headgasket, alternator, and a few other things were done recently. PO also included a bunch of parts including a brand new clutch/pp/tob, clutch master/slave, couple sensors and relays, and a few more bits and pieces. Had the original owners manual (purchased in Yakima, WA and dealer serviced for much of it's life). Also included a Bentley and "The Audi Quattro Book"! Included a TAP chipped ECU, but it doesn't sound like I want to use it. Time to find a Ben Swann or natrix chip!

Has the option Fuchs in good condition. I also picked up a set of B5 S4 Avus with winter tires that I'll be putting on this shortly. From what I've read they'll fit, but I probably want spacers in the front.

Not much planned for it, just get it running reliably and up the boost to 1.9bar

Pressure tested the intake system to look for leaks, found a huge one at one of the injectors. The injector was super loose in the insert and pretty much pulled out by hand. Picking up some seals from NAPA tomorrow to replace them all and put them back in. Also ordered a CIS fuel pressure gauge so I can test it. Hopefully the injector seals fix it!
The rest of the intake system looked good with no tears in any hoses, just some oil in them (engine has 215k miles).

Here are some pictures (sorry for the low light, it sucks having sunset at 4:30). Only real fault in the car is the dent in the rear passenger door. Other than that, it's probably one of the nicest condition Audi's I've owned!

Have you figured out the hot start yet? Did the new injector seals help?

Pretty much. Found one of the injectors completely out of the head basically. Replaced the seals and fixed all the vacuum leaks only to find 3/5 injectors were firing. Got 5 more injectors at the junkyard and was able to get 5/5 that weren't clogged. However, I'm pretty sure one or more are leaking as the engine is flooding after shutdown. I rigged up a switch to the fuel pump so when I need to restart I kill the pump to unflood the engine and then turn it back on when it fires up. Going to order some injectors when I get back in town from visiting the parents for the holidays.
