Marc's 1990 4.2L V8 Twin Turbo Coupe Quattro

I figured I'd welcome my new car by jumping right into a project thread

Here's the car, so far I'd say it was worth the 1k mile trip.

I flew down to Atlanta Georgia on Friday and spent Saturday and Sunday driving back to CT.
A couple of things about the car made the trip 'interesting'.. one was the inop blower motor which got frustrating when the windshield starts to fog up (FYI, socks work great in a pinch). Second the driver's window would not roll all the way down. It would still go up and down when I left GA but would stop at the half way point. Naturally with my luck the window did eventually go all the way down.. and stayed there

Did I mention that it rained a lot on Saturday?

On Saturday night I stopped by Doug place in Cumberland for visitation rights to the 4ktq20vt, and also to see if something could be done to at least get the window to stay up, as rain was in the forecast for Sunday. For this task, Doug brought out the big guns

A short piece of wood with a groove for the glass weged against the bottom of the door frame worked great. Thanks Doug!
Back on the road for Sunday, clear skies the whole way up

So anyway, I'm in a bit of a debate about the direction I want to take with this car. I've got two options running through my head: 7a 20vt vs v8 4.2. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, namely the cost effectiveness of the 7a turbo vs. the shit-eating-grin torque of the v8. Decisons, decisions

Was that piece of wood made from oak? That would be an ironic coincidence - I've BTDT TWICE with my CQ. With inoperable AC. Luckily its not that warm in the PacNW.

Pine I think. With any luck, I wont need it long! Now where's that window regulator repair procedure...

congrats
anyone else here in love with their coupe's interior?
They held up real well for a 15 year old car. At least mine is pretty clean and i paid 500 bucks for my coupe.

Yes, I'm quite happy with mine. I replaced the wear-items - New steering wheel and shift knob (both OEM parts from other models) helped a lot. And I'm a bit tired of the Zebrano wood trimming. I have platinum leather/plastic interior so I think maybe a high-gloss black enamel would be good (perhaps brilliant black, color-matched to the car?), or if I really wanted to spend a lot of time on it, strip the wood and stain it with a transparent black stain? I'm not sure how well that would turn out, but at least I could always paint over it.
Not to hijack Marc's thread or anything... I'll shut up now.
PS Marc there's this billzcat1 guy who makes short shifters for CQs...I hear they're to die for! :-D

The wheel in my car is definitely worn. I _love_ the sport wheel in my //S6 so I'm going that route I think. Same here on the OEM shift knob, although I'm not sure if I will keep the 5-speed pattern..

Hmm, the wood doesn't do much for me either. I like the glossier stuff like in my //S6 (noticing a trend here?). I think I saw a euro trim package somewhere on ebay that looked more like the later //S-car trim for the type 89.

Marc,
It looks like those tires are on backwards!

Hey that looks pretty nice! Way to go dude. Toss a 3.7 V8 in there with a nicely sized turbo and things should be rockin'!

I replaced some wear items in mine too... slippery old leather seats looked like wild dogs had chewed them up.... tall people will find steering wheel too far away for proper bent elbow driving...
Luxurious wood looks out of place now, eh?
And I think Bilzcat Shifter is a MUST DO...

understatement of the year award? :-P
That car really was a hoot to terrorize the streets of cumberland with. I needed about 4 cushions behind me to reach the pedals (vertically challenged compared to Doug by a long shot!), I just wish I hadn't been so damn tired to play a bit more.
Thanks Doug, now I just gotta convince my Dad and his family that they should throw his 60th B-day down in the area, which would just happen to coincide with old skool quattros weekend

3.7 eh, that'd be a new one!

If I'm going v8 I think I'd like to go with a 4.2. I'd start NA and think about turbos later. Then again, I think if the turbo option was ever something I'd consider down the road the cheapness of the 3.6 might be smart since I'd likely go the sleeved cylinders route which would make the increased price of the 4.2 moot.... hmm..
