Hey everyone,

I just bought my first "s" car. It is a tornado red 1993 URS4. I bought this car to replace my 95 BMW M3. I wanted to start a project thread to document my progress with the car as well as receive some advice and feedback. This community seems very helpful and I am excited to be a part of it.

I found this car while I was searching for my BMWs audi replacement. I was considering B5 and B6 s4's but I wanted something with boost which ruled out the B6, and something fairly easy to work on, which ruled out the B5. The car currently has 200xxx miles and runs and drives great. The seller had done tons of maintenance and mods which he included a stack of receipts for.

I am very happy with the way the car is currently set up but I would like to upgrade and change a few things. I will keep this list updated as its bound to change frequently.

What turbo/manifold do you have?

Good starting point, already got some power too!

I forgot to post the other half of the ad. I will do that tonight. The manifold is a ceramic coated Wagner ho manifold with a gt3071 turbo.

Edit" just updated first post with the rest of the mods.

So I finally got around to installing my 034 catch can setup. I haven't done the oils return line yet as I lost the fitting for the bottom of the can. Also a picture of the stop techs because I love them.

I have that catch can and don't feed oil back to the pan, not ever much in it...

So I'm looking for a bit of help here. Since I bought the car I have noticed, mostly in second and third gear, before 3k when boost start s to really build, I get a scratchy noise coming from the hot side of my motor. It almost sounds like the noise you get when you don't get a car fully in gear and its makes the scratching noise.

Also at idle I get a rattle sound from the waste gate pipe, I will attach a video of that noise.
What I'm trying to figure out is if they are related. And if not, is the scratchy metallic noise while under 3k my turbo going bad? It boosts fine but I feel like it might have a tiny bit of shaft play. Also does anybody have an idea of what's causing the piping to vibrate at idle?

Bump... anyone have any idea whats making this noise?

Also I have been looking into building a meth setup. Any advice for products to use and how to set up failsafes? Also what kind of power would I be able to make when I tune for meth, keeping in mind im still on stock rods?

So I think I found the root of the grinding noise i'm getting at low RPM's. I took a look at my transmission mounts and this is what I found....




Both sides are completely shot. Luckily was in the seattle area and saw a craigslist ad for a guy selling his 034 track density mounts. I will be installing them tomorrow. Anybody have experience with these? Is the NVH really bad? Either way it will be a huge improvement.

In other news I installed clear corners, messed with building an intake that I think should work, blacked out the grill (not sure if I like it) and played around in the snow.







Not sure how much I like this intake set up. Looks kinda crappy, but the location of the filter seems good and it sounds great too...



I will upload pics of the trans mounts out of the car tomorrow and update if that solves my noise issue.

get yourself a stock airbox/intake

2nd on the intake, car looks good though!

Are you guys recommending the stock box based off aesthetics, or performance? I remember reading once on 034's website that the stock box becomes pretty restrictive when you get into higher horsepower. Is there truth to this? If so do you think our airboxes would benefit from something like the Darintake mod the b5 s4 guys do? Do most people end up using a cone filter intake setup since they run different exhaust manifolds and cant use the stock box?

The stock airbox is not restrictive at all and provides a TRUE "cold air" intake, pulling air directly from the front grill. It also provides much better air filtration than a crappy cone filter.

At higher power levels, the MAF becomes the most restrictive part of the intake. The airbox can actually build positive pressure at speed due to a "ram-air" effect of scooping air from the high pressure area in the front of the car.

PS - don't believe anything you read on 034's website

I think they are recommending it due to the fact your air filter is pretty close to your turbo without any shielding. It might flow more then the stock intake box setup, But if the in coming air charge is significantly warmer then you aren't gaining much. The veterans will correct me if im wrong


If your staying with the 3071, Id say use the stock intake box with a K&N drop-in filter.

yeah what he said, haha especially the 034 part.

Thanks for the tip. Stock box it is. I looked on 034s website and it would appear as though they removed that claim in their ad for their intake setup.

If you have a header/turbo setup that prevents the airbox from fitting, then it's time to come up with an alternative solution. Otherwise, keep it as long as you can. I ran a 3071 on an RS2 manifold with the stock airbox, no issues.

Thats what I figured. But the inlet hose was trimmed when the turbo was installed according to the recepits. Which apparently led to it having very poor fitment for some reason. I tried multiple times to get it securely mounted but it slipped off. So until I get a new hose, or come up with a new solution, this will be my set up for the next couple of weeks.

Well I got the new trans mounts in. Needless to say the old ones were shot. The trans is still noisy but it is much less noticeable.

I do regret going with then track density so far. Very loud and much more vibration, which I expected, but I underestimated how much it would bother me. I will run them for a while and see how I feel. Ohh well I got them for a good price locally and the car feels amazing when driving aggressively.

Yes, with solid mounts "assertive" driving is key. My 4kq is the same way with solid engine and tranny mounts. Baby it and it hates you. The plus side is it's much more direct.

Just how bad is it with the new mounts?

When do you see positive boost pressure with the 3071 and are you running .63 or .82 ?

Thanks. I believe it is the 63. Ar. I really should find out for sure. By the time 3k comes along things get pretty lively.

The trans mounts I have gotten used to. The most annoying part is the off and on humming vibration noise I get in the cabin. Other than that they are fine.

I also installed then sport wheel that came with the car. It was pretty easy and the new wheel is so much better. Huge improvement for appearances and performance.

Interior looks great, love the sport wheels; I desparately need to find myself one, and that^^ picture has me wanting white face gauges really bad for some reason. Whole car looks great, nice project!

The sport wheel makes a huge difference for how the car feels and it makes the interior seem much more modern.

Also, since the first day I owned the car I have not liked the super light steering. Obviously this is most noticeable at low speeds. Coming from my m3 which had super heavy steering it was very hard to get used to. Until I learned the s4 has seevotronic. This is a feature I had in my allroad but didn't think my 93 would have it. So I unplugged the connector on the rack and just like that the steering is just how I like it. awesome with the new wheel.

Anybody actually like the servotronic assist?

I decided I wanted another 5 cylinder car . Luckily I sold the URS4 to my brother and he found a 200 avant he wanted to buy so I sold the B5 and bought it back. I will be updating this thread again now that I have some bigger turbo plans.
