Help removing center diff from 016 trans

Post by jretal »

Hey all,

So one of my fun moments w/ the 4000 at WG was the rear seal on the trans letting go.

TO rectify the issue, I'm going to take the high bias (4:1) center diff section from Wiley's old transmission and pop it onto mine. Issue I'm currently running into is getting the rear section of the trans off of Wiley's old trans.

I can get about a 1/16" gap from removing the bolts, but can't get it all the way off. Are there any tricks or something I"m missing?

Any help is MUCH appreciated! Need to get this off and cleaned up so I can get it onto my car and make it useable again.

Thanks all!

if they swap like an o1e, loosen the bolts and give it jstu a lil pry'ing, I believe theres also a large/thick oring in ther as well, that would keep it from coming off easy, and it should slide off and out

Slightly different than the 01E (I was watching vids of those coming apart).

Austin hit the nail on the head on MG. I was missing a bolt (holds the main output shaft to the rear housing), but still needed to be pried off more than I anticipated.

Regardless, good center diff off and waiting for the trans to come out of my car so I can swap the housings and reinstall. A lot of work for a stupid seal, but at least I can enjoy the 4:1 center diff now!

I don't think the diff from the 01e is going to work in the 016 Justin.

You would be quite right on that, Hank :)

I have Wiley's old 016 that was grinding gears, but has the custom stasis 4:1 center diff in it. So I'm harvesting the rear assembly from that trans and swapping it onto mine. So this will fix my leaking rear seal PLUS give me an rear bias diff... should make things a little more interesting!

What I meant referencing the 01E was that I was only finding vids on disassembling the 01E vs. the 016. There was one bolt difference on how it's held onto the rear... and that was the bolt I was missing!
