i was just wondering if the rods on 07k are same as 1.8ts???? the both are 144mm and the deck height is 220 for both engines...only question is the wrist pin size

I've actually been looking at the same thing. I believe the answer is yes, they are the same, and also the same as the 2.0T rods. The difference is that the 2.0T used several different wrist pin sizes (20, 21 AND 22) and many of the aftermarket piston offerings use these larger wrist pins. I believe 07K pistons are all 20mm wrist pins, but N/A application means they're probably not as strong as the 2.0T stuff.

For my budget/requirements it's looking like early 2.0T factory pistons w/ 20mm wrist pins and a set of AAN/3B rods are the ticket for a stronger-than-stock but budget friendly internals setup.

Hank has been machining FSI pistons for lower compression for use in non-FSI budget builds...might be worth reaching out to him. He seems to think he could make some decent power on them, but hasn't found someone to want to test really test the limits of them...customers usually just opt for forged pistsons

I think you'd have to use 1.8t rod bearings because the 144x20 rods all have tangs. I can't see how they would be any different between an 07K.

Assuming 07K and 2.0T heads have a similar volume, you could use VW CCTA or CBFA (maybe any/all VW 2.0Ts are the same comp ratio? I'm just learning the newer stuff...) pistons as they're already 9.6:1. Even the higher compression pistons (10.3-10.5 factory) would end up around 9.5:1 with stacked headgaskets... which isn't bad.

I think the FSI pistsons he was refering to were TTRS 07k, so 10:1 and then he'd machine them to around 9:1. Supposedly a better/stronger design over the plane N/A 07k piston. I think I meant to post this in the other thread since we're talking about rods here haha.

I get that TTRS pistons are probably better, but if 2.0T VW pistons are even just as strong as 1.8T ones, there's a 125hp/cyl (so like 600hp in a 5cyl config) drop in 9.6:1 piston right there. Same bore and stroke as 07k, unless the combustion chamber/valve angles/something are wayyyy more different 2.0-07k than I'm assuming I see no reason it wouldn't be an ideal option.

Was there any more headway on whether the 2.0 pistons will work in an 07K application?

Give me a month or two and I should be able to verify, just need to wrap up a few projects before I start tearing into a new one.

I've got my 07k partially torn down, but other priorities (namely track time in the B5) have slowed me down on my project if you already have an 07k ripped apart single 2.0t pistons pop up on eBay regularly for cheap.

Do you mean top of piston to center of pin? Or top of rod to underside of piston?

pin height is pin height. center of pin in the piston to the top (flat part) of the piston.

for example, to stroke a 1.8T from an 86.4mm crank to a 92.8mm crank, you use the same 144mm rods but the new piston has a different (stroker only) pin height and wont work on the 86.4mm crank.

Okay so I finally have the two in front of me.

Wrist pins are the same size (19mm) and the pin height (measured from top of wrist pin hole to top of piston):
1.8t: .900"
07k: .775"
(diff of .125)

Top oil ring to top of piston:
1.8t: .237"
07k: .125"
(diff of .125")

So they definitely won't drop in. To make it even further off the 07k has a pretty deep bowl and valve reliefs in addition to the pin height difference problem. The 07k piston is also much narrower than the 1.8t, but it seems like a weight/engineering thing, not a clearance thing. 07k wrist pin is .250" shorter.

Rods measure and look identical. What I'm not sure on though is whether 20mm rods would work. I would imagine they would since the 07k got 20mm and up wrist pin sizes, but all I have in front of me is a 19mm wrist pin 07k and 19mm 1.8t.

I don't have digital or dial calipers; I'm OG lol. It's just a hair over .225, enough that if you were thinking about machining it wouldn't matter. Sorry for rounding.
