How much to cut from 016 bellhousing?

Post by Noisy Cricket »

Looking at old rally photos, it looks like the top of the bellhousing was cut off inlne with the top two bellhousing bolts to make it possible to swap transmissions without removing the steering linkage.

Check this video around the 5:49 mark:

It looks like there's a plate there that would prevent them from putting two bolts/studs in to clamp down regardless.

My thinking is, why stop there? Why not cut the top of the bellhousing off down to the circular part of the casting?

i cut mine twice, then welded a "cover plate" (Derek welded, i dont do aluminum too well myself) to close the hole left directly to the flywheel.

gotta find a picture.

and the color coded paint marks are matched to the bolt that goes in that certain hole. no more guessing. yellow in yellow, orange in orange, etc.
