Well Crap! I'm having a bad car week. Alternator on the A4 went out so of course I decided to fix a few other things while I have the front of the car in Service Position. Then yesterday my newest acquisition (1995 Audi S6) died on me on the way home. Had to get it towed. Started off with the usual suspects, (Fuel pump, G4 & G40 Sensors) but quickly ruled them out.
I didn't like how the engine sounded while cranking, it didn't sound like there was good compression in all cylinders, more like when you're doing a compression test. Pulled the timing cover, put a quick index mark on the cam sprocket and....... bad news, Cam is not turning and on further investigation I can see some stripped teeth off the timing belt. That sucks, I was planning on doing it this winter because I have no idea when it was last done, (Purchased the car this summer).
Anyone want to hypothesize on how bad it is? I didn't hear any nastiness when it went, and it cranks over fine. Am I just looking at a few bent valves? I guess I better get the S8 done so I can get the S6 in the Garage. No room for both cars. :-(

Re: Bad Car week
No doubt you have bent valves, and probably some cleaning up to do of the pistons at a minimum.

Re: Bad Car week
Define "Cleaning Up". I'm hoping it was minor enough contact to not damage the pistons. I always take a wire wheel to the pistons when I'm in there so I'll definitely "Clean Them" and inspect them for damage. If there is a nick in the pistons, whats the recommended action? De-Bur and smooth it so there are no sharp edges to hold heat?
Re: Bad Car week
Yes, that's what I meant by cleaning up. It wouldn't be ideal to run them that way if they are nicked, but I'm sure you could get away with it depending on how much damage there is.

Re: Bad Car week
They would have to be really chewed up to have to pull them. But if you were in a high speed and didn't take the car out of gear when it happened that may be your case. I would stop trying to start the car anymore and pull of he head. Take a picture post it here and you'll get a ton of responses on if you need to go further.
I'm also really sorry about your bad car week. I have had so many times like that where everything that can go wrong does. it's painful and that's why i have just one car.
To be honest as well every vw I owned was a complete nightmare. Catastrophic failures were the norm, and the Audi is the first dependable vehicle I've ever had. In the end it's a game of chance, maintain the things you can and make the best of the worst situation. I wish you the very best.

Re: Bad Car week
Man that sucks, looks like you'll be replacing intake valves.

When it rains, it pours...
But by the looks of things, when you get these issues shored up you should be in for some trouble free motoring for a while.

Re: Bad Car week
Thanks Guys. Bad timing for sure but in the long run, I was planning on building up at least one 20vt head for my Urq project car. So I guess if this one is shot I'll use my other 130k head and build this one up a little. ;-)
S8 is currently in the Garage with the Tranny 80% out, I need to pull it this weekend and rebuild the 5HP24. Never done that before so I'm hoping it goes well. Then I can get the UR-S6 in the garage and tear into it.
On the List are:
* E-Bay Log Manifold. (Will probably get some grinder time to clean up inside casting flash and clean up ports a bit.
* Pull & Replace Head. What else will be determined after removal.
* May do a light P&P "while I'm in there" But I may decide to skip this for now.
* Timing Belt, Water Pump, Crank & Cam Seals, Idler, etc.
* Rebuild the Oil Cooler lines as they are seeping.
* 2.0t Coil Pack Conversion.
* MTM 1+ Sitting in a box needs to be installed.
* Go through Suspension. Has a couple clunks. Need to replace front Control Arms and replace some bushings & Strut mount in the rear.
* Tighten up / Adjust Tranny shift linkage. (Maybe a rebuild is in order? )
* Do some plastic work on the Underbelly tray.
* Exhaust..... Not sure what I want to do here yet.
* Change out Tranny Fluid
* SS Brake Lines as the rubber ones are cracked.
* Fuel Pump Relay.
* Install my Stereo System (ADS PH 15.1 and componenets)
Thats about it for now. But its a good list to get it in shape for daily driver duty. What am I missing?
* Boost hoses maybe, actually, I may move this over to Projects.
