Hey all! Been lurking on here for some time, figure I may as well share with you guys my build so far. First off, have to say, this place is awesome! I've got a thread going over at rallyanarchy but am not on there as much anymore. If anyone is interested in reading through the few pages here is the link
http://www.rallyanarchy.com/phorum/read.php?5,85885.
Quick backstory of the car..... Bought the car, DDed it for a bit and then decided I wanted to have a dedicated track/race car. It's been on and off for a couple years now and honestly isn't very far along at all. Should be running this summer but just enough to drive itself into the back of the shop for winter and then onto a trailer for when we move cross country next summer. With kids, racing(dirt bikes), work etc etc etc, progress comes and goes with time and motivation. Story of our lives I guess eh?
Anyhow, cars being built to RallyAmerica rules and will eventually get to stage but will see hill climbs some time prior to slinging gravel. I'll throw up a huge picture montage here in a little bit, kind of showcasing the ups and downs over the last year. Last year I had a falling out with cars altogether and parted almost the whole thing out. Luckily no one bought the chassis and well...... Here we are. Cars pretty much where I started lol. But progress will happen, albeit slowly I imagine.

Welcome! We look forward to seeing this project to completion. Not many rally builds going on here yet, so that's a nice change of pace.

Thanks for the welcome! Hoping I can juggle everything and get this car to a good point this summer sometime. Should be a blast when it's all said and done!
So I worked on it some tonight, after everyone went off to bed. Like mentioned before I'm pretty much starting from square one again, except I don't have to gut the thing lol. So where I'm at now are rebuilding seat mounts. I had built mounts I was happy with but between the cage builder rushing the job and wasting almost a full 2" of headroom, and my new seats being taller as well as side mount, the old mounts weren't gonna work. Spent a night cutting and grinding those out. Not fun at all....
Spent another night or two measuring and figuring out how I was going to drop almost a full 4" while still being able to be up off the floor. This is what I'd come up with, given the resources I have and wanting to keep adjustability. I'm not entirely excited about it, but it's going to have to do. I'm kicking around tying the sill sides into the cage and plating the tunnel side. Just to keep the mounts from moving with the floor pan on hard debris hits from underneath.

You can kind of get the idea, 1.5" square tubing and 1.5" channel that will be notched and welded to the tubing. Should give 3-4+" of front to back as well as pitch and about an inch of side to side. I'm trying to keep a decent amount of adjustability due to not having an "auto" helmet(been using my MX lid), cage padding and to allow setting shoulder harness height. Everything was good with old seats on my end, cage builder screwed the pooch and now I am where I am. Marching on.
Tomorrow or Thursday I should be able to get everything welded up and the seats should be done for the most part. Then on to mounting the hydro handbrake, mounting the harnesses and roughing in where I want the shifter to sit. I think once I get past this shitty part, things will move along.
Oh, also going to try and make this work too....

Got a little bit done on the pig. I didn't get a chance to get back into the shop last week to finish the mounts up. Was itching to get back in this week! With my schedule I only get a few hours a week during the day to work out in the shop so normally I spend my nights out there after everyone's gone off to bed. Got a surprise from my awesome wife today that she would be able to pick the kiddos up, meaning I'd get almost a full day to tinker! So I finished up the seat mounts and started roughing in where I was going to put some stuff. It's amazing how much time is eaten up when tools are limited! I used to work in a fab shop where I was able to use their tools. Chop saw, cut off wheel and 5" grinder makes for a long day ha!
Oh! Also waiting to hear back about a logbook. Should hopefully have that in my possession in the near future! I need to patch a couple holes in the firewall and then hope for some nice weather so I can push the car out, give it a good bath and then paint the interior and engine bay.

Got a little bit of work done this past week. Hacked up the dash and got it mocked up. Not sooooper excited about how much I had to cut just to even get it past the front bars. So goes the battle I guess? Was a big personal/project milestone however. Means parts get to get put back IN the car!

Also shook up a rattle cans and painted the engine bay. Sprayed half of a fender just to see how it'd turn out. Both came out really nice so I'll go ahead and rattle the whole car in the next couple weeks. Cars goin to get plastidipped or wrapped so I'm not worried about exterior finish. Race car...
Got awesome news from Hank yesterday! My RS2 trans mounts are on their way and I'll be able to really get moving! Excited to get the tranny into place to finish up some interior fab work(along with the thumbs up from RA on my cage) before I can spray the interior. Super stoked at the next coming weeks as far as the car goes. Should start looking like a car again instead of the sad lump that's been sitting in the back of the shop haha. Excited to see it with fresh shiny paint and an AAN under the hood!
Oh! Got some spare suspension parts yesterday. Drug home a local chassis purely for the suspension, brakes and subframes. Should have them all stripped off and the chassis shipped off to scrap. Is literally a rolling shell with nothing in it. Also got another pair of URS front Bilsteins from a fellow enthusiast this week. Going to work on trying to revalve them and then make 2 sets of complete suspension sets. One for gravel the other for Tarmac/hillclimbs.
Should be a fun push over the next couple weeks! Pictures!

Happy Easter all!
With having the day off from work for the holiday, I figured I'd spend a couple hours and get parts stripped off that chassis I drug home earlier this week. Spare 2 piece suspension? Yes please! I've got the front hubs yet off the urs parts car that I'm thinking I'll stuff into the spare knuckles and slowly start collecting parts for a 5 lug swap.
Does any one have a picture of a B3 shifter setup? I mix matched one when I had the 01a in the car and I can't for the life of me remember how it worked lol. I also cut the tunnel extension out of that chassis with thoughts of using a b3 shifter to get the shifter up closer to the wheel. Pretty much the exact same setup I made when I had the 01a in the car. But I sent the shifter with the motor/trans when I sold it last year.
My driveway is starting to look like a junkyard haha. Scrapper is coming this week so out house will look a littttttle less redneck than we already do ha!
Trans mounts should be here this week! Wooooohooooooooo!!!!

I really need to do a better job keeping this updated as I go..... I'm so effing tired anymore that posting at the end of any given day seems like a chore ha! In between waiting on a baby boy to show up(actually in the hospital now

, getting the house ready, basement carpeted, dirtbike ready for enduro season and spring clean up on the property, I got some work done on the car!
Trans mounts showed up a couple weeks ago so I got to throw the 01e in the car to start mockup and planning. I wanted to shift the whole motorset back as far as I could. Ive got long legs and this chassis generally has me reaching a little bit to shift. With the generous slot on Hanks trans mounts along with the 3 hole Mustang mounts I picked up, the whole powertrain was able to be shoved back almost a full inch and a half! Boom! Which in turn allowed me to get the shifter back another 2-2.5". Happy happy! Like mentioned earlier, I wanted the shifter up a bit closer to the steering wheel. I used the tunnel extension I cut out of that B3 parts car, some sheet metal I had laying around and ended up with a pretty nice setup. For what I'm using it for, I'm happy.
So! Motor and tranny is in. Shifter setup done. Next stage is to get my harness mounts done and the rest of the interior cleaned out to apply some por15 to the floor pans, maybe built false floors and paint the interior. Then I'm taking a break from cars for a few weeks(yeah right....) to focus on racing my dirtbike, enjoying the newest addition to the family as well as just enjoying the last summer in MN with everyone. Some progress pics?

Little update over the past month or so....
Haven't gotten a ton done on the car. With a full litter of kiddos, racing xc motocickles and building two cars, my plates a weeeee bit full anymore ha!
I finally got paint laid on the interior and cage. Sanded a bunch of the flash rust in the cage, primed it then rattled canned the whole thing. Pictures make it look nice but it's not hahaha. Humid in the pole barn/shop, hot and because fucking race car. I'm coming to the realization that this car isn't going to be the awesomely professional build that I generally hold myself to, purely due to lack of time anymore. If it were a couple of years ago or a couple of years in the future, it'd be a different story. With this damned thing everything has to be built and I just don't have the time like I used to. My black car will get the "royal" treatment and this one is going to be my race car slut. Not slapped together by any means but it's going to get thrashed lol. Paint drips be damned! I'll build a "professional" rally car after I ball this one up in the woods and the kids are out of the house hahaha.
Also started working on the downpipe and figuring out my radiator setup. And! Picked up some nice Ronals for diiiirt cheap. Bit of poke but should like nice on one of my 4ks. Probably the black one being as I don't like the speedlines on it now....

Not much to update on lol. Most of my automotive focus has been on my black MSed 20vt 4000 and getting that thing together. Being as that runs now and it's a matter of buttoning up some small stuff, I can slowly start shifting over to the race car again.
I was stoked on the AAN for awhile but a couple of things kept nagging at me about it. One was the cost of keeping it together over the long haul, then there's the typical cooling issues and the final one was chassis balance. An 07k would be awesome but too many dollars just to get the thing in the car. Next logical power plant is the 1.8t. They are everywhere for cheap, insane after market and will save weight along with moving that weight back. So a couple of months ago I started a search for a donor B5 and a few weeks ago found a good one. Snagged a B5tqm for damned near nothing and am in the process of tearing it down for parts as we speak. I ordered up a bunch of stuff this week and should hopefully get working on it in a couple of weeks when this b5 chassis goes to the scrap yard!
Got some parts from Summit today including my shiny new griffin radiator, my 3" tubing for a downpipe, battery kit and a junction block. Also have a ko3 flange coming from ATP and a pair of ABT/ABK mounts coming from Issam at IE. Oh! And I'm working on getting the suspension together too! Thanks to DE80q I've got a pair of BBSE fronts to run a little bit better inserts. Ordered up some of CompBrakes new 3 piece solid mounts too.
The plans to just run stock ko3 and ECU/harness to get it running somewhat quickly. After yanking the AEB harness, it looks like the wiring should be pretty straight forward. For once Audi made a simple harness haha! Should be to start cranking on this thing come October if all works out.
