Opened my hood to find what looks to be welding slag or something like it. It's the tiny little balls on the EM runners. I don't know what this could be from. It appears to be aluminum, or much like it. It's in the vicinity of the v-band connections but I don't know what in them would cause this stuff. I've looked over the engine compartment and can't find anything there that would have caused this. Anybody seen this before?

Hmmm... odd. How long have you had those runners (ceramic?) coated? From my limited experience, it looks like it bubbled up or something, especially in the areas that might've been harder to get at during the coating process - or the parts that run hotter.

Lol. They've been Swaintech coated for about 2k miles or so. I hadn't really put the screws to the motor, getting the EM really good and hot, until very recently. Mostly easy driving. The stuff brushes off pretty easily. Maybe it's the White Lightening coating just getting cooked in?
It appears to be contamination in the coating. I would get that from time to time when I would powder coat Aluminum parts.

"That certainly can happen. The lower melting point materials used to help the coating expand and contract with the pipe can bleed through the coating and form on the surface. You could even see some fracturing of the outermost layer of the coating in some situations. Even if one sees fracturing there is still good insulating coating there which is a more effective thermal barrier than any of the other coating options. We often say the coating is ugly when freshly applied, mars easily, can be difficult to keep clean and can change appearance when in use. Attractive it is not. It is effective as a thermal barrier but not attractive."
This would make sense since I really didn't notice it until I really beat on the motor for an extended period of time...
