Another Crank Trigger Option?
Anybody use a flying magnet crank or cam trigger setup on a 5 cyl?
I am using a hall sensor with 3 magnets embeded in the crank pulley on my Alfa V6. I think you could do a similar setup on a 5 cylinder but you would obviously need to install 5 magnets in the crank pulley for two pulses cycle. Then just use a single window dizzy for cam sync. Or maybe it would be easier and a decent compromise to implement it on the cam pulley.
This is an SDS hall sensor with trigger magnets embedded (epoxied) into the back of the crank pulley which I am going to use with MS2. http://www.sdsefi.com/EM5E20.pdf

It won't work with 5 magnets on the crank. Calculate TDC for each piston and you'll see why.
It would work on the cam, but is no better resolution-wise than a 5 window distributor. That is the bare minimum resolution to make a 5 cylinder run.

I guess another question that popped through my head - could you machine the teeth for a 60-2 wheel on the crank pulley itself? Similar idea to the flywheel? Would potential movement/deflection of the outter ring cause issues?

Ok, so please educate me if I am missing something and not thinking about this correctly but I think that it would work if used with a cam sensor. I also think that it would work without a cam sensor with wasted spark ignition and two injector pulses per rev.

It's been done, but the outer ring does move around quite a bit, and has been known to slip over time.
I still think the rear crank seal trigger is pretty slick. It's probably a weekend project, but you will have a no non-sense solution and you don't have to buy a new flywheel.

Figured I'd whore out the 90's crank trigger, even if the pulley is a bit different (still looks 2 pc). If/when I build a urI5 I'd go for the RMS trigger Jimmy mentioned.

Ah, the walk is a good call, Jim - wasn't thinking about that.
The rear crank seal trigger is very slick, but don't those have issues from time to time too? Or am I off on that? Not sure where I'm getting that from, so my thoughts could be off-base.

My plan is to buy a NG flywheel and cut a 60-2 trigger pattern into the outer edge of it. I know this is not a viable option for some, but with the MegaSquirt setup I have, this solution should work perfectly.

Yeah or just use any of the thousands of flywheels Audi cut a 60-2 into to begin with.
Custom cutting one is deff easier tho.

Is there a factory I5 single mass flywheels for the 01a/e with a 60-2 trigger cut into it? I know some of the newer flywheels have them.

That would solve the trigger issue yes. I''m pretty sure that's a little way too much clutch for my "tractor engine" 20vt. Nice setup though.
