Yeah, unfortunately sacrifices will be made in the name of tracking. I haven't been to H2O in a few years now, kinda miss it. But given the choice between tracking and H2O, I choose tracking. Maybe next year if its not on the same weekend as Tremblant.

Update!

Didn't get a chance to go on the dyno yet. I let Brian Weldon drive the coupe down to //S fest because sadly I wasn't able to make it in person :-( (family event)

So this weeks project has been pulling the subframes and preparing for solid subframe bushings, delrin control arm bushings, and delrin rear diff mounts.

Rape, pillage, BURNINATE!

Image

aftermath, after some cutting, swearing, and hammering

Image

Subframes are now fully seamwelded and off at the sandblasting shop awaiting powdercoating (my oven isn't big enough to fit the subframes).

I'll be away in CT for the rest of the week so that will be all for now. I'm starting to sweat getting things done for Tremblant. Still need to install the S2 hubs, test fit wheels and tires, install new subframe bushings, and assemble everything.

Yikes.

LOL, when I saw that first pic the first thing that came to mind is you got pissed of and burned the whole damn thing....then I realized what's going on.

Why do you need S2 hubs, you already have brakes up front, no? So you can run wider wheels??

I'm just guessing here but he's prolly wanting 5 lug and bigger brakes for the 3.6TT.

brakes are staying as is, reason for the 5 lugs is so I can share wheels with the wagon. I've already got two sets of track rubber in varying widths (255/40/17 for when the KW's arrive and 225/45/16 for the borrowed shine racing setup I've got on the car at the moment).

I already talked to Myke tonight about wheel bearings (oddly in my years of quattro ownership I've never once had to do wheel bearings!) but forgot to ask one question.. it looks like the wheel bearing has to be pressed back more than flush with the face of the knuckle, true? If so, what are you guys using as a press implement to touch only the outer race? Pressing up to the face was easy, just lay the bearing flat and press the kuckle onto it.. but cant go further than that without some kind of adapter.

Just my imagination, or are wheel bearing procedures NOT in the bentley?

Race and bearing kit works wonders, your N75 valves are on the way, sorry for the wait.

I see. Yeah, being able to swap wheels between 2-3 cars is very nice.

As fo rthe bearings...use a race on the press...its simple.
Do you have top hats in 5x112 already? if so, who made them? I'm looking for somebody to make me some, but I have a 'custom' offset as I'm running machined UrS hubs up front.

by that you mean another wheel bearing? That could work.

yes, I have one already. billzcat1 'old stock' from years ago :)

i usually use a socket as a spacer for the wheel bearings :)

to press on the outer race, that would be a big damn socket... like 40+mm :-o

yup :D we got a drawer full of em'! we also have old wheel bearings laying around incase a socket doesn't fit good enough. it's always good to have a bunch of old crap like this laying around.

Posted: Tue Aug 28, 2007 6:51 pm

yep, old race, but problem is if you use your original old one it is the exact smae size as new, so you'd be pressing that in as well.

A piece of thicker wall steel pipe works too if you can't find the big socket. Check the plumbing section in HD or something...

Lucky for you on the hats. I've heard Coleman will do hats for you if you give them specs and what rotors you intend to use....I am yet to contact them. Oh, and appearantly they don't charge a whole lot either.

oh, and no circlips front or rear? I didn't see any when pressing out the old hubs (other than a funky abs shield thingie that looks something like a circlip behind the wheel bearing with an opening for the abs sender).

Ah the protective rings? This is a good read http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=16822

Correct. At least on my early build there was no circlips, just ABS rings you speak of.

thanks for the link austin, that was very interesting reading! I'll have to watch out for when I re-assemble everything.

Gotta love holiday weekends. Bunch of progress over the last few days.

S2 hubs installed, 5 lug hats mounted on 993 rotor rings:

Image

test fitted some wheels. The 255/40/17's fit no problem on the rear:

Image

On the fronts the tie rods interfere but I'm expecting the KW's will correct that problem. The 225's on //S car wheels fit fine with a 5mm spacer:

Image

044 fuel pump installed, here's the old and new:

Image

I opted not to use the check valve, straight connection to the banjo:

Image

relay/fuse installed

Image

Image

Also upgrading to a B4 90q manual climate control and dash. Got my father to help. He got a little too excited when I told him he could "remove" the digital climate control wiring :-o

Image

bits *_everywhere_*

Image

New dash and climate control in, perfect fit:

Image

I'm still undecided on what to do regarding the passenger airbag. Its _almost_ big enough to fit the ecu but leaves a gaping hole in the dash. Hrm.

Image

Manual knobs, FTW.

Image

Unfortunately there is transmission removal in my future. My clutch (spec stage 3) is slipping and I want to get in there and replace the friction surface and install the 3+.

Looking forward to getting my subframes powdercoated so I can zip the bushings in and put the suspension together.

Marc, you've got to do something about that steering wheel. That is ugly in such a nice car!!
