First of all, we just don't have that much grass in Las Vegas.
But then the grass we do have stops growing.
Since we can't watch the grass grow, we need something to keep us entertained.

How about we all watch the progress on this thread - unless someone has some paint thats still a bit tacky...

Sean, I am in town for Thanksgiving. We should go over and see if the tranmission installs itself if we stare at it long enough.... Plus I wanna see the new Pasta Burner!

Hey settle down boys!! Im into containment for the projects at the moment....building up points with the wife. I dug the footers for the side block wall today and only tore up one water line in the process. Why is it everytime you dig with a backhoe you always find either a pipe, or cable, but never gold? I wonder if Chris will get his Urq running before Her Urq?

John, I am so onboard. My summer of garage time has reciprocated into a complete home re-decorating labor project. In the midst of 6 inch baseboards and door changes, paint, tile, kitchen overhaul....the list is way long. I couldn't have worked on the car that much! Nevertheless, I'm glad your still with us and not pancaked under a transmission in the garage! Have a fantastic Thanksgiving John. All my best to you and the family!

Dang Sean, that sounds serious!! Is she demanding all the time the car sat in the garage not running? LOL When you guys come over to the house, I get a bit nervous when I have to leave the garage unattended, but now Im not sure you are even welcome around the house if my wife is home......I'd hate for the subject of kitchen remodels to come up that's for sure. She has already been talking about paint and redoing rooms. I told her then lets paint, but she says she wants new baseboard and ceiling molding first. I quit talking. LOL

 Don't get me wrong John, I am very happy to be a married family man, but what is it with these wives? I think the math works out like this; 1 hour garage time = 10 hours of honey-do time. A friend of mine once told me of the $10,000 set of bath towels. It goes like this; The wife goes out and buys some new bath towels. But, they don't match the color of the bathroom. Since we are doing a color change though, that sink could stand to be replaced, along with the cabinet and faucet. Oh, by the way, we need a new shower door. And we really should change that flooring and the light fixture. But, the hall should have the same flooring as the bathroom, so we may as well buy enough for that. Oh darn, the paint there should be changed too. But that linnen closet has to go! Since we're buying cabinets, we should take advantage of the sale......you know where this leads! Like I said, the $10,000 set fo towels.

Yea, lets poke it with a stick and see if it jumps back up into the car.

Not much of an update and no pictures to go with some of it. I finely got the tranny back into the car and took Her Urq out for her maiden outing with the new 20vt. I don't know what I was thinking, being that I have played with old audis for quite some time, to leave the house on a first drive after having done so much without any tools. :o :( I was only going to take it up to get fresh gas in it about 3 miles away. Just as I about got there I start smelling what smelled like burning. I see whiffs of something coming out from under the hood, so immediately pulled over to check things out. I thought maybe the oil that I had leaked out from the oil return of the turbo that had soaked into the heat shield, had caught on fire. You can imagine my panic, when as I thought the car was on fire, I pop the hood and run out to lift the hood only to find out that I hadn't adjusted the hood releases right and the passenger side wouldn't release. I thought that I was going to watch the car burn down on the spot. To my relief I suddenly realize that I am smelling antifreeze and that I have just overheated. :curses: I still wasnt impressed, but at least wasn't going to have to watch Her Urq burn to the ground. Turns out that the brand new water pump that did just fine at idle when the clutch had me grounded, decided to spring a leak somehow. I filled it with water and gas and drove it back home. That is pretty much how it sits at the moment.

In another thread, Jim saw a picture of my engine bay and made the comment that picture made him want to lick that bay. Well Jim, with less than 10 miles on the clock it has been broke in well with a steam and antifreeze leak all over everything. I was bummed.

Hank has me back to being excited about the car again as he reminded me of how clean the bay used to be by getting me a unique Christmas present this year. My wife isn't nearly as thrilled as I am, but I told her I would just have to build a shop so that I would have somewhere to hang my new picture. The resolution is incredible thanks to Hank's father in law. Pretty impressive!!

I told him today on the phone that when I get the car painted some day, that I would have to have a matching picture of the outside to go with this one. Of course I will have to build a shop big enough for two big pictures. :D

Very nice picture. What did you do to the clutch to fix it?

You do have a gara...........oh wait!!!! I guess your's is now a new shop queen. Big difference.

I really haven't got the clutch fixed. I pulled it out and found that the new throwout bearing was a bit thicker and would bottom out on the bell housing before backing off the pressure plate fingers all the way so I replaced it with the older all metal style bearing. That along with some shimming got me down the road, but it still isn't right. I did a third gear pull into boost and felt like I started to slip the clutch so I'm just going to get going, do a little tuning, and see if a can limp it by in this mode until I get a few miles on the engine......you know a forced break in limit.

Have you gotten any input about what the real problem is with the clutch?

Yea the problem is that Im running an 01e flywheel in an 016 application. The flywheel really needs to be not so thick.

Thanks Brandon. You're awesome! Hank surprised me with this one, but I like it and it is a cool picture.

Sean came over tonight and helped me troubleshoot my leak. Since I hadn't got the engine tuned well enough to idle I wasn't able to look for the leak while running. It looked to be coming from the waterpump area, so I just assumed a bad oring. With Sean there tonight for a second set of eyes, I pressurized the overflow tank while he looked for where the leak was coming from. You might ask why I couldn't pressurize the tank and then look myself? Well the way I pressurized it was by getting a good taste of antifreeze in the process. What we found was that the SS braided line running from the water manifold, behind the timing belt backing plate and to the turbo was bad. At first we just thought it was the AN fitting at the manifold, but on closer inspection found that the water was leaking out all over through the braid. There didn't seem to be any reason for it and I would think that with water running in it there shouldn't have been a heat issue. It looked like it had an issue about 6 inches from the manifold. I will probably cut the braid back to see the defect/hole when I get the chance. We reused the fittings with a new length of hose and it's back to being water tight. I need to put all the timing belt crap back together, since I was almost to the point of pulling the water pump. Thanks for the help Sean.....I know you just came over to try to steal my new picture for your new shop space (front desk area), but got caught for wrench duty. :-)

I'm glad I could do more than kick tires and pocket some parts when you weren't looking this time.

I updated Sean Y about your progress and we decided you need to get it buttoned up so we can take advantage of you being off work this weekend and see if we could pull together 3 UrQ's for Cars n Coffee this Saturday morning. It would be marginally more fun than digging a ditch ;o]

016 locker -> urq t/o bearing and fork
016 torsen -> torsen t/o bearing and fork

You do need the correct pilot bearing for the trans, I remember needing to get an urq pilot bearing because the 20vt pilot bearing didn't fit the end of the 016 locker main shaft.

Actually I think it's more dependant on the flywheel/clutch you use.
Flat flywheel, use torsen fork/to bearig
Dished flywheel use locker fork/to bearing.

Mike H had MC2/3B flywheel/clutch in his Ur-q with locker 016 and had used the matching fork/to bearing (new style) with good result.
He just wanted the WX to rev up quicker.. ;)

I also used that setup on the 7A 4kq... locker gearbox, 3B flywheel and clutch with new style fork/to bearing.

HTH

Yes sir I will remember this when switching to 7A unit with later 200 style clutch... don't the NG and NF motors use the flat flywheel also?

It would beat digging a ditch, but i sure will like having a fenced off side yard. :D

I will try to be running by Saturday, but I can't promise anything as far as cars and coffee goes. I have all five of my kids coming into town for a New Years Eve party at the house. I will have a bunch going on that morning, but might be able to grab a son in law and since its early be able to run out there. We'll see......got to get running first. :frustrated:

hmmm. by my count that is a lot of extra help. that ditch will be dug in no time flat, and still have time to go to Cars n Coffee :)
