all I can say is tuning a V8TT can be a serious work out!!

Marc you've got a fun car there, keep it topped off and you'll be fine!! :P

Another honorable note: Marc I didn't think it was a good sign at first when that statey came running to your door!! :o Good thing he got called to something more important LOL

ahh good times, good times :)

Thanks for the tuning help Myke, I dont think I would have made it to the gas station without your help. Literally!

So we're driving along: "Myke, the mixture is going lean, I dont get it?" "It doesn't do it when we lay on the brakes and put the motor under load?". "I fattened up the cell but it isn't helping, still lean??".

"Um. The car's sputtering. Marc, are you out of gas?"

The Statey was icing on the cake. Pulled me over probably because of the massive nose dive on the car due to shitty front shocks (wasn't really going THAT fast.. I think? :wtf:). Anyway, we pull over, car smoking a bit from the breather remnants, statey says "This car gonna make it", both of us, nearly in unison "Its running a little rough". Gotta love the stops that result in the statey flinging your license and registration back at you and speeding off, especially when the car you are driving doesn't have an inspection sticker :-o

I never get that lucky! :frustrated:

Looking forward to seeing your machine in person, Marc! 8)

Sounds familiar to when I was doing the initial tune on my 4000 :-P

Passed the officer going the other direction, look in the rear view to see him putting on his brakes and looking for a place to turn around. I just pulled into a parking lot and waited for him. After telling him what I was doing, he laughed pretty hard and then said all was good and went his merry way...

glad to see the beast is up and running buddy! Gonna be at WG2 ??? :)

Pulled the front end apart on the v8 last night to get to the bottom of a nagging issue regarding the tensioner for the serpentine belt. The belt squeals under load from the alternator and I've discovered that the reason is because the tensioning arm isn't tightening up like it should.

Further investigation reveals that you can disassemble the mechanism leaving two needle bearings inside the TB cover that a little keyed cylinder is supposed to ride on. Those two bearings are seized on both my covers and a spare cover I got from Haydn (thanks!). Anybody BTDT? Part number? Etka only shows a full replacement TB cover :(

So the problem isn't the tensioner damper shock? I've been through that twice now.
But
a break down CAN be found on the ETKA.....illustration 152-10.

I hate to suggest Blau....but, they carry a serp belt "kit".
Or I've seen listers match up the bearings at a bearing shop. Like I said....I've never had a problem with them...so I never really payed attantion to the correct info.
A search on the audifans V8 list will prolly get you the info...

I always get a little fidgety when someone says blau in a negative way. I'm biased towards them, and yet I can't deny the problems people have had.....total rock/hard place :(

I've ordered from them before (Blau) & have never had a problem...as others have had. Just some of there prices are more than I can get certain parts from the dealer. & I know Marc can source those bearings somewere.......just can't recall were I seen the info at :frustrated:
But from the pic he posted of the front of the motor I still think it's a tensioner damper....it looks all rusty, & such. But he's got it in front of him...& if he says it's the bearings...then it must be the bearings.

Yeah, having worked there at one time has allowed me to see both sides of the coin.......

Imma think by the time he finds the right bearing (which I'm almost positive is out there) he may as well just be able to source a good used part, or save up the clams for a new piece :(

Ok, more on the serpentine belt saga. After fixing the bearings and getting the new $$ timing belt parts on (tensioner shock, $30 adjuster plastic bushing, etc) and timing the cams up I discovered that at the limit of adjustment the serp. belt was still too loose.

I called Napa and they only had a belt that was an inch shorter, nothing inbetween. I went out and bought it anyway but of course I needed something about .5" shorter :(

So after sitting and staring at the front of the car for about half an hour I finally decided on modifying the pivot arm to get the job done. I had a spare arm from the timing belt cover I got from Haydn (:thanks:). I welded more steel onto the bottom portion to provide plenty of meat for the threads I was going to need and I drilled a new hole for the tensioning roller that was ever so slightly further away from the radial arc of the pivot bolt.

Naturally I didn't get it on the first try, but after a second attempt its right where I want it. Everything goes back together tomorrow :woowoo:
