Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro drives!
Re: Toph's 1990 3b, 01e, scope-creep Coupe Quattro
Well I survived, and still have a positive bank account balance. I'm sitting in the Vegas airport now, and can't wait to get back to see all of the parts that are waiting for me at home. Expect pictures late tonight- that is if I'm not exhausted by the time I get back...

Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
Pretty happy with the deal I got today - I now have my starting point for the built 5cyl in my future.
I picked up a 110k AAN bottom end, 110k narrow first 5speed 01e still bolted to it(can't have too many of those, right?), and a 200k AAN head in need of valve stem seals. Also as part of the deal, and these items I do not need (read: for sale), I got all 3 manifolds with applicable sensors, an oil cooler with lines, shift linkage, engine mount arms, tranny mount arms, PCV and lines, and a turbo coolant return line. Let's just say I bought an 01e and got a free AAN. Thread followers can have some savings passed on if you pm me from this thread in search of parts. I'm so tempted to post what I paid for this in 'how much is an aan worth' thread currently going on mg...but I guess I'll be nice and keep it to myself
I know....."pictures!"....they're coming soon

Nice list Toph. Great score on the AAN. Build it!
Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
I will definitely be building that AAN...just a matter of how soon really
Didn't do anything on that list. A last minute decision to rebuild my shift linkage delayed that whole process until parts arrive Monday. Instead, I por15'd a bunch of parts, rebuilt my distributor (which had a wide rotor but correct Audi and Bosch 3b part numbers), assembled my tie rods with new adjusters, and helped Tim with his car a little. I will pull the engine and transmission early in the weekend and undercoat so that it has at least some chance to dry. No pictures right now - my phone ran out of electricity

I cleaned the shop up a bit, pulled the engine and transmission and laid down some undercoating. This stuff looks like it should dry quickly, so it'll be ready for assembly mode starting Monday if the shifter bits come in the post. No, it doesn't run yet.

Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
Yay, pictures!
Did some distributor fixin'

Metal gear and correct 11mm wide tip rotor, repinned and cleaned up - ready to go

The major reason I'm not already assembling

Some garage cleaning was certainly in order - and yes, that is an authentic Stewart #20 Home Depot car NASCAR vinyl poster...It makes for great camouflage 'round these parts. He keeps a close watch on people driving by through the door window

All better!

A whole bunch of coated parts ready to go on

And these just wouldn't do, so I brushed off the original POR15 coat and the rust flake under it, recoated both arms, installed new adjusters, and even por-coated the TRE's haha... I'm learning that I might be slightly OCD over my work...
I will take pictures of the re-rebuilt units later (whilst doing my best to remember to take some pictures of a certain shift linkage for John
)

Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
Tim ordered up these adjusters for me from Bambridge on s2forum in UK. They are great replacement pieces, but better. The center portion is upsized from stock to make adjustments easier in the future. Even with the anti seize on there it's safe insurance that the alignment tech won't roll the corners easily like on the puny(and rusty) factory adjuster. I feel like it will be money will spent, especially considering how reasonable the price is.
Yes, I know I missed the portion under the nut on the driver's side...fixing that tonight

Now back to the Shop!

Jealous of the adjusters. Ill need some of those i guess.
Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
Parts look awesome! Glad you made it back from Vegas with something still in the bank, dont think I could have managed that haha. That color you went with on the intake manifold and valve cover is really nice, also close to what I was thinking for mine, just don't know if it's gonna be in the budget to order more powder (I know its cheap). Can't wait to see this at carlisle!
Also, I'm going to pm you about some 20v stuff I'm looking for, figured you/tim might have some/all of it

Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
Looks good Toph. I too am jealous of the new adjustment setups. One of the things that really makes a guy shake his head when dealing with the Urq steering arms is that only the driver's side is adjustable. Now only does this make it extremely hard to get the steering wheel exactly lined up straight, but it also presents a problem with most alignment outfits in trying to "teach them" how to do an alignment on the car. Throw the NLA parts in the mix and .......well did I say I'm jealous also?
Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
They're definitely nice, and we got the 2 sets delivered for around 135$ I consider it worth it, given the poor state my factory ones were in.

Thanks, Shawn...this round of grey is waaay better than the nastiness that was cement grey
John, I can see how that is a complication in the whole process and adds a number of steps. You guys should start thinking of a replacement setup that is adjustable on both sides and fits.
I got back under the car tonight and brushed down the rusty ebrake adjuster and hit it with a few rounds of pb. I took a few shots of the undercoating and fuel lines when I was down there. I was also reminded that I need to address the whole rear end in the near future, and replace the passenger side brake hard line from the T over before I drive it.

The shift linkage is ready for new parts, a combination of mostly por15 and the factory coating in certain areas finished it off well I think. Soon it shall be tucked away not to be seen by many but me, but I'll know it looks good haha.

I lowered my engine mounts by about 2mm and remembered that I had the rubber cap for the mount.

That's all for tonight

Shift Linkage is rebuilt!

This weekend will be full of progress on my car. Here's the list reorganized:
X - Move engine and transmission out of the way
X - Remove, recondition, and reinstall the ebrake tensioner
X - Finish undercoating tunnel
X - Finalize return fuel line from firewall to tank
X - Flush fuel lines
Install fuel lines
X - Install shift linkage
Install heat shields
X - Lower engine mounts
X - Lower passenger transmission mount about 2mm with a custom spacer

Re: Toph's 1990 3b 01e Coupe Quattro
I had a pretty productive day yesterday, hopefully today will be the same. The tunnel is now undercoated and ought to be dry now at the rate it was going yesterday. I finished up my fuel return line and pulled the lines back out so that I can flush them today. I was planning to clean them with air first, then flush water through, then more air and water again, then finish with air...should get all the bits from cutting out of the line. I reconditioned the ebrake mechanism that had been bothering me for a while now. I probably will regret not doing it in por15 for durability, but I didn't feel like waiting for that whole process and busted out the aerosol.

The threads will get antiseize as well as the 'hook' portions where the cables attach. Trying to back that nut off of there to remove the bracket was making me nervous, but plenty of pb blaster and some patience kept the threaded rod from twisting off.
I decided that the 15 minutes it took to make this spacer was worth it for my piece of mind. I like knowing that my spaced-down transmission mount is still making full contact with the subframe. I started with a sheet of aluminum the same thickness as my engine mount spacer (yes, those are washers, but it still has the same contact patch as from the factory). I sent a 2 3/4" hole saw through it, set the mount in there and traced it out. Two holes, some hacksawing, and a little bit of filing later I had a nice little spacer piece.

The heatshields also got a little love. The main tunnel piece was so coated in crap you could hardly tell it was aluminum. The two smaller pieces were in fairly decent shape, but some corrosion in places made me opt for giving them the aluminum ducting tape treatment. I don't think I have a before picture.
The square piece goes right in front of the shifter box, and has been modified since this picture was taken. There was no way the stabilizer would have fit with it there, so I cut some of it away and re-taped the edge.

That's all for now, I'm hoping to be able to put the engine and transmission back in today. I'm on the fence about shortening my 016 output cups for the 01e. I probably will send them out for machining tomorrow, but I will be able to change them out in the car. That will mean having to drain some of the oil (it already needs to be topped off, so I may not have to drain any) and just waiting until I get the cups back to refill the transmission. I'm going to make myself some coffee and get to work.
