Fiddlesticks! Goldfarb thought I wanted an HE351VE not the 341. They do not have a 341.
Now the question is do I suck it up and go really big (make an adaptor for the 351's non standard flange) or KISS and try an internally WG'd Holset?

I'm using the he351ve, but it's...um...big....especially that variable hotside. I'm planning on running an flange adaptor to space and angle the turbo where I want it, and would also like to port the wastegate from the adapter. I have a 034 T3 log manifold to mount it to.
Here it is next to the K26:

I'm just now starting to mock up the pieces, so not sure how it will all go together yet.
Hard to say what to do, as it is hard to justify having to redo stuff. You can probably find a 341 from elsewhere for a reasonable price.

The thing with the HE341VE is that, afaik, it was only on 2006 Fords with the Cummins ISB.
Putting the WG into the adaptor is a consideration I also had.
The 341 is not much smaller but enough to make things a bit easier.

Chris, Where are you going to put the engine? You know there is only so much room in the engine bay and I'm not sure by the looks of the size of that turbo that you are even going to get the hood closed with just the turbo, let alone the engine. :wink:

There is a core HE341VE on Ebay but I think I'd spend a mint to rebuild it. Thinking I'll either go HE341cw (fixed geometry IWG) or suck it up and go HE351VE. The risk with the latter is not getting it installed for B.B.Q. and not having a good solution to, what I believe is, the problem of keeping the WG closed when the rack is contracted and backpressure is increased.

Ed, just out of curiosity-and experience living at your altitude, why such a large turbo? Seems like up there you would want something more moderate that can spool quicker in the lack of atmosphere. Is there something about these holsets I just don't get?

A cubic foot of air in Denver has ~20% less O2 than one at sea level. This causes all sorts of challenges because of reduced efficiency everywhere. Running a higher flowing turbo allows more air, fuel, and power. Holsets in general spool up quickly; the VGT should improve spool (if the WG is closed) and the HE341cw is only a 9cm² turbine which is on the small side for a 2.3.

The problem with a small turbo at elevation is that even though they want to spool up faster they are still trying to make boost with thin air and quite often will over spin in order to try and reach boost levels. My brother, living at 8.5k elevation, has gone through a few turbos for this reason.

Don't let the overall package size fool you too much either. That monster of a turbo pictured has wheels that are about the same size as a 35r. Because it is in a diesel application, they don't care much about weight or bulk. I have a picture somewhere with a hy35 next to a 35r. It looks like it is bigger from the housing sizes, but you take off the covers to expose a 30r sized wheel on both sides.
I wish someone would get some of these holsets on dynos with garretts on the same day.

Anyone have a 1991 with turbo and AC? I was looking at the lines tonight and they run above the chassis vs below like on my 1990. They may be in the way...

The more I look the more they are in the way. For a second I thought I could get around it with an SQ style manifold but the lines are just as bad, if not worse, towards the rear (the turbine flange is centered between 3 & 4)
I don't really see how the 034 log with a T3/T4 could clear.
Worst case I pull them but then I have more work for the winter and no AC (just needs a charge now, I have been looking into freeze12). :dur:
