Looking really good there Martin. Takes a certain level of sickness to decide to rip apart a perfectly working DD to do an engine swap in. Doesn't that baller house of yours have a cool garage? I know what you mean, I was painting my windows upstairs in my garage-sweating worse then my 30 mile bike ride I did in the morning

Thanks for the offer.
I give you 6 months before you decide you want to step up the turbo size.

Another productive morning.
Hood is closed!

Once I cut out some of this plastic lining it will be even better!

Tried the IC on, thanks to Frank Mancini.

This is going to be fun!

Yep, I'll have to go down with intake pipe, no way o go up.
At least it's all in the same area so piping from turbo to IC and IC to throttle will be pretty short.
For some strange reason I am way more excited about this project than I was about finishing the '84.... I guess this is something new I've never done before.

Looking really good, can that compressor housing be clocked more down and the intercooler/crossmember inlet be changed? Is the ecm original to the engine? Does it have socketed provisions for a chip set?

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
No need to reclock or relocate I/C... all fits well on that front.

The ECU can be chipped, problem is that it's such an early example that not too many people make chips for them.
If I decide to chip it down the road I do have a spare computer I can ship to Europe for massaging while still having a mobile car here.
It was way too hot to work on the car today, but starting tomorrow it is supposed to back to semi livable conditions so I'll be back to do as much as I can.
The pedals are still not here, that is the only part keeping me from reassembling the interior.

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
A lot of guys are swapping the whole ECU for a Transporter/Crafter ECU so they can run a VNT turbo.
Although...... I know of a guy that programmed a slick standalone VNT controller, needs RPM (from W-signal on Alternator) TPS and MAP sensor. Can run an N75 valve just like a factory VNT. I bought a board and I'm going to play with it some to see how it works. The controller is based off an inexpensive Arduino prototype board and the guy has the code for free.
Let me know if you want more details.

I was going to swap for the AEL (140hp) version computer/harness, but it also requires MAF, different sensors, matching pump etc. So for now I'll stay with the stock setup and chip at most.
I'll let you know when stock becomes boring.

Ah, I see. For some reason I was thinking the turbo fed into the crosspipe then into the intercooler. Looks like you have it all figured out and it looks oem too.
That's good to keep it stock for as long as possible, everyone can attest, once the power adders start it's difficult to stop. Keep up the good work.

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
Look what arrived today!
TDI on the left, stock on the right.

Whoever needed the gas pedal, I just wanted to make sure I don't need any parts, all is now availble.
Here is another side by side.

And closeup of the TPS.

Installed!

And the steering column back in.

Still have to run the battery cable from the trunk via the firewall so I can't put the HVAC box back in just yet.
Also got few minor things done under the hood.

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
Not much happened over the weekend, busy with kids and other people's cars..
Last couple of days have been productive.
- Engine is fully wired, interior portion 95% done, just need to get the HVAC box back in.
- Power steering pump on and plumbed
- Battery box has a spot in the trunk all predrilled etc, just need to have it blasted and painted.
- Battery cables are run and ground strap in the trunk done, just waiting for the bulkhead connectors, same as technoquatro's, after that I can slap the HVAC box back in.
- Original fuel filter byppassed, what a PITA, you need to lower the tank to gain access to it.
- IC to throttle connection done
- Got the propshaft shortened (used 4kq front section which is 1" shorter).
Andrew W has been working on the bumper, his efforts can be seen here!
http://forums.quattroworld.com/9080/msgs/27243.phtml
Tomorrow I hope to have the rad in and plumbed, and H connection done for the fuel sysem so I can run the original in tank pump and reduce the pressure to 5 psi, apparantly TDIs like to have a little pressure help the diesel pump, it also makes priming the system a breeze.

The I5 is an awesome engine, I also had serious contemplations with this engine when it was up for sale. I'll look forward to seeing this car to completion. Good Luck.
How close is the linkage and shifter setup compared to the 80Q? Would the RS2 stuff fit in my 80 too?
I wouldn't knock the V6, I've been talking with a German who has one tuned to over 350 ps. Yes the cams are problemsome but so are the ones on the 4 cylinder. A replacement typically fixes the cam issue.
Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
Martin, I'm way impressed on how fast this is coming together. It's not like it is a simple project with lots of parts in any junkyard. It's looking really good and should be a great DD/commuter car. The best part is it is still an I5.
Did you gain much weight in the front with the diesel block? I know that the old Mercedes I5s were hunks or at least seemed to be.

Thanks, that's what happens when one is unemployed with not much else to do... speaking of, I'll wrench for food..
This engine is definetly much taller than stock 2.2 I5 but that would not add too much to the standard 20vt setup, the other bulky item is the pump and bracket.
A/C delete cancells that one. I do have CQ springs just in case the I5 turns out to be much lighter than the V6 it replaces. We shall see.

That's about right with the free time. Any prospects? I've always said a project needs time, money, and ambition, but trying to come up with all three at the same time is what seems difficult. I could stand to miss a few meals and sure don't seem to be able to come up with the time I need to finish projects......do you make house calls? LOL

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
Wow martin this came together pretty quick! Makes me hopeful for my TDI swap
Are you on TDIclub? There's a member there who does GTB turbo kits... I was thinking of eventually going for a GT1756vk... quicker spool than the VNT15 on the ALH (1900rpm) but good for 230bhp, same as a stock //S!
Either that or the 17/22 as it's a lot less work, manifold and turbo all in one. 10hp less, 100rpm more spool.
OR just get my VNT15 bored and bigger comp wheel. We'll see

Re: B4 90 quattro with 2.5 TDI
You 4 cyl guys have ton of options, unfortunately since there are only so few of these 2.5s here I will have to go to the fatherland for some go fast goodies and ECU chipping. For now stock is the word.
If anything I have had my eye on a nice GT22V from a 151hp Eurovan.
Did very little today, that kind of a day.
