This is some top notch stuff. How many VAG cars have been tubed like this ever? I can only thing of that A5/S5 with the I5 20V and then a Corrado, I'm sure there is a few more but not many.

I enjoy all the updates you post, but don't why you get in a tizzy about no one replying. In your sig it says :

when you TALK, you TEACH.
and when you LISTEN, you LEARN.
now, STFU and HEAR what i am trying to say to you!!!!

So why are you complaining about people not talking in your thread. They are trying to learn, therefore listening. You have 49 replies and 1500 views, each reply represents 30 views. So we are watching this thread, but most I assume, don't have a whole ton to add that would contribute to the thread, so we don't post. Everyone here enjoys your posts. :)

no tizzy here.

when i interact with myself i do not need to do it on a public forum that takes TIME AWAY from projects such as this. if i want to discuss with myself what my next move is i dont need to broadcast it.

so, while i enjoy sharing, i enjoy more doing this stuff.

the signature was from the final straw for me on MG, and Brent wanted it so i put it here. i will remove it though. it was told to me long ago, and it was one of those life-sayings you hear and it sticks with you. or not in many peoples cases. much like the little-known second part of a well known adage.

"if it aint broke, dont fix it". but how many people know part two???

"if you cant FIX IT, then DONT BREAK IT!"

same sort of thing.

and, there are a few of VAG cars tubbed out and RWD. the Puerto Rican guys do it mostly. they run down into the low low 7 seconds with them.

John Sleath - Audi S2
the RS4 of Tomi Paavola
Ecklund car, the A5
Ivan Rabbit - Mk2 Jetta Coupe AND the Rado
Vittito - Rado
MMI/John M - VR6 rwd Corrado

there is an Audi TT being built in PR as well, RWD same full tube chassis stuff. these are what i recall of the top of my head. there is another MK3 or 4 Jetta RWD full chassis car coming out of LI/NY area verrrrry soon.

Those crazy Puertoricans... Pfffft...

I wanna see this at the Panamerican event at Atco... I'd definitely skip Waterfest this year if this shows up there... Awesome work!

my car has no hope of being finished this year. and it was planned that way.

when you build a $50k+ car on your own dollar, it takes a while. and i have no intention whatsoever to hurry it along. it will be done when its done.....

plus, buying a new house in May kinda puts a damper on this a little bit. just a little, but not killing it.

but i NEED that 24 x 48 shop as it gives me room to WORK!!!!

I feel pix of the 24x48 shop is required :)

I have a 30x30 garage, and truthfully it's a glorified 1 car garage!

i was gonna wait til tomorrow to post these, but hell i figured i got replies so i owe it.

i went weds but he was gone, so i cut the body free in the back and moved it over 3/32" to square it up again and welded it back down. then yesterday i made the parachute mount bar and rear body mounting stuff. today i did more.

I did a little work yesterday, but more work today. I got the rear end of the body tied in to the cage now, tabbed up and mounted. And the parachute mount tabs as well. Made a little inconspicuous hole in the rear panel, between the license plate tub and the bumper area.

Image

Then I made the lower frame rails and tied them in to the lower crossmember and the chute mount.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Built some more bars to mount the front four-link plates, and am making some triangulating braces next.

Image

Image

Image

Also built the strong-backs for the four-link plates and welded those in fully, so the area between the plates is welded.

here is what has been done recently. working on triangulation bars in the bulkhead area, or front 4-link bars. then moved on to building the rear rails and stuff.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

then i test fitted some tub patterns, 40" wheel tubs :) built the Pro-mod style upper rear halo, and the upper frame rails.

then i started the support work for the rear halo.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

after that stuff, i did the rear upper rails. thats where i left it for a couple days off as he had to go to the hot-rod swap meet. back at it all day tomorrow. i do this after work from my day job. next is more bracing in these long bars, and x-bars and v bars and such to mount the tubs to and strengthen everything

and yesterdays work.

Image

Image

and then the upper shock mount crossbar. it will get diagonals to the rear body mount/chute bar as well as x-braced in the "box" in front of it.

looking awesome as usual aaron. Are the 40" tub templates halves off of big ass wire spools? Just curious, kind of looks like it :)

no they are just plywood cutouts. the holes in them are for setting them up on the rear axle i think. and the anti-roll bar maybe.

7.80's is the goal, around 170-175 or so mph. the ET is more important to me than the trap speed, though.

the car itself is being built to certify 6.00 - 7.50. not that i plan to go that quick.

this weeks progress.

Did some little bit of work on the rear framerail supporting. Made the rear diagonals to help stabilize the chute bar, and then started on the x-brace in the lower rail to pro-mod halo. still gotta redo the lower short x piece. it is too short.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

So, I re-did the lower leg of the X-brace, and then moved on to the front portion of the cage.

Image

Image

The cage was built/designed from a Monza, but there are differences. So we had to un-bend the front bars ~5″ to fit our plan. No problemo.

Image

Image

Image

Got the bars over the doors finished, in and tacked, the front floor bars made and tacked in, and the rocker/sill bars made and in. Then I tossed in the mockup transmission case in there to see how that looks.

Laid out and set up front spindle location, and got an idea of where the motor is actually going to sit. I have decided to locate the motor/trans for future possibilities, as in LS motor maybe later on down the road, as the 4cyl VW motor I run is so much smaller than the LS motor anyhow.

worked on diagonals in the floor, and the seat-crush protection crossbar. then the eyebrow bar.

Image

Image

Image

Image

working on this all this weekend.....

this catches us up to Saturday evening. i think i have the 3rd member now. havent committed to it yet, but i think i am going to. 4.30 Pro gears, lightened ring gear. 40 spline steel lightened spool. Strange aluminum case, forged yoke, Pinion support, and yoke collar thing. all set up and ready to drop in. came from a 7.20's '63 glass body Vette drag car here, one of the builders buddies. it was his backup, wrong ratio for him.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Got some more crap out of the way of the dash bar, and put it in. Then I started on the funny car cage portion. I messed up the very first bar, and I dont know if we can save it. I will work on that tomorrow. I hope to have the whole cage portion tacked into place and the roof bar also. It may be wishful thinking but whatever.

Also, test fitting a seat so I can build the cage portions around it. Kirkey drag seat.

Image

Image

Sooo, we were able to save the piece I thought I eff-ed up yesterday, but it made the two back bars near impossible. I messed around with the outer bar behind the seat for about 3 hours, and finally we just cut the rear halo leg off the hoop and coped that bar into it. It will be fine but I was not trying to chop up that halo bar.

Then, on to the harness bar and helmet bars. Tomorrow I will go in and try to knock out the rest of this portion of the cage. It is a lot of work, this cage/chassis building stuff! And of course, he needs everything dead nuts perfect! 00.1° is not acceptable….. 00.0° is.

some more work done. spent a long time working the bar over the driver, i didnt want to fuck it up. level, flat, square, parallel, blah blah. i can live with sooooo much more than Carey can, i am a simple guy. but, his name is on it so its gotta be right and look good.

also bought the 3rd member.

but, i told Chub i had today off from the car, and since i had the opportunity to go i went. time is money. soooo, before going in we went down to the park and shot some hoops, and played on the structures for a bit. he was happy.

Image

Image

so first i finished off the horizontal bars. then spent a few hours on the over-drivers head bar. also made the corner gussets for the hoop to over-door bars.

That looks incredible. I wouldn't blame you if you went with a bigger motor, something like a turbo ABZ would probably suffice.

i certainly would not feel bad doing the 40v V8 4.2L in it, surely.

That would work. I was just thinking ABZ because they are cheap compared to the ART/AWN/AKB/AUX 40v 4.2's. They are even getting to be somewhat not-hard to find in wrecking yards now. They also seem to be less problematic than the 40v engines.

thanks!!!! i am trying. learning. doing. building. it is also very trying to my OCD/ADHD type behavior, by being so asymmetrical in form. but, there are rules and this has to conform to those rules.

i just feel it is that time, to go all out.
