I had a buddy in the air force knock me out an aluminum panel to replace the plastic one that goes under the climate box. You should be fine doing something like that, as for condensation, it shouldn't leak out and it should go out the evap drain line anyways, as long as it isn't plugged.
As for the compressor, should be fine as long as you can line up the pulley. Making lines really is a peice of cake depending on what the compressor connections look like.

So here's an interesting question. Has anyone ever removed *everything* underneath a 4KQ - drivetrain, suspension, subframes... and then had the shell hauled away?

I was looking under the rear of the car the other day trying to figure out what they could hook onto to pull it onto a flatbed. With no suspension and no subframe, there ain't much underneath that's "hookable".

The front of the car is at the garage door, so the easiest access is from the back.

I know the 80/90 has a hook on the unibody, I thought there was one on the 4k as well, but I guess I'll have to look.

well, you are in the rust belt.... I used to have a nissan pick up truck that hung around the east coast. Had like 300k miles on it, but everytime we worked on it, we had to deal with seized or broken bolts... No fun. I like the dry high desert climate...... no rust.

Door handles I think I've got but I'll have to check to be 100% sure. I bought a (used) set not too long ago but recently the left rear broke so I need to make sure the spare is okay.

The molding - you mean the thick plastic pieces? I've got 'em, will have to see what it takes to get them off. Also I bet shipping would be a killer, but let me look into it.

There are philips screws on the bottom... and slots along the side where the plastic bit meets the metal bit - they look like they're meant for you to put in a screwdriver and pry but I tried doing that gently and nothing happened. :tard:

Oh and it sounds like you only want one side? If so, which?

Okay so the weirdest thing happened today! I went out for breakfast in the morning and in a particular place in the driveway there was this:

There was a really bad thunderstorm and maybe a lightning strike, and when I came home this is what I saw:

The weirdest thing is it put leaves on all the trees too!

Anyone buying that? No, I didn't think so.

Well today was a sad day and a good day. The nice man from the junkyard showed up this morning to pick up the shell of the 4KQ. It was even more of a sorry sight than in the photo - the front fenders were gone, windshield, RR door, and a bunch of other stuff. But an awful lot of good parts got sold off (and some are still available!) and will help other Audis live on.

And now... work on the 80 begins in earnest. I've already got a buyer for the coilovers so job #1 is get it jacked up and the suspension off. Then the real fun begins... read all about it here: http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php? ... 0&p=534152

I'm happy to report that today that's changed! Thanks to Chris from Force5, I now have a (SEE BELOW) hose that with a little tweaking, fits wonderfully:

By "a little tweaking" I mean the end that connects to the rack needed to be bent a bit, but not a lot, maybe 15 degrees in one axis and 5 in the other. I think the tubing is still sound... I guess I'm gonna find out!

What fluid to use posed a bit of a dilemma, since the car wants ATF and the pump wants the CHF11-type stuff. So I decided to split the difference and go with Redline synthetic.

EDIT: I've received a lot of questions about the pump and hose so I did some more research to try and get some good answers. The pump came from a 1995 A6 with the 2.8-liter 12-valve engine. I think a pump from any A6 of that era with that engine will work. The hose came from a 1990 90Q with the 20-valve engine. I think a hose from any B3 car with the 20V motor or later ones with 20v motors will work. The trick is the donor car needs one of the newer-style PS pumps that looks like this:

...and not one of the older "boxy" 4KQ-style pumps.

Oh man... I looked around and I actually don't have any pictures of the pump! The "see below" thing referred to the edit I made in the post.

I did find this photo on the internet:

Although it looks a bit different, the pump bolts directly in place of the AAN pump and the AAN pulley fits onto it. The hose going from it to the rack is as described in the post above. I can't remember exactly what I did for the hose from the reservoir to the pump, I think I just used some fittings I had lying around. Generic fittings and hose clamps are fine with that hose as it doesn't operate under pressure.

Very nice project I'll have to post some pics of my set up for you as well. Another motorgeeker told me you can run the stock ps pump and just change the pressure spring under the x plug to get the right pressure u need. I'll post a couple pics shortly. The coolant setup is cool as hell with the copper plumbing..
