Wow, that early B5 cluster is very fitting. Sorry to hear about your transmission troubles.

That's too bad about the trans not being compatible... but at least you're mostly only out some time.
B5 cluster looks good. Moving the oil temp gauge to the cluster frees up a spot for boost/vac gauge without having to hack the centre vent, which is appealing to me. Wonder if the TDS-1 from the C4 cars is compatible with the B5? It would be cool to have the DIS display important engine parameters in an OEM+ manner.

That was my thought. It frees up two spots in the AUX gauge cluster since both voltage and oil temp move to the dash cluster. I re-purposed the oil temp gauge for trans temp, and put a VDO boost gauge in place of the voltage.
I have not owned any C4 cars and am not familiar with TDS-1. What is that?
The B5 cluster has the center LCD multi-function display, which I wired into the CQ dash controls so I still have full functionality for MPG, average speed, miles to empty, trip computer, etc.

It's kind of like an early version of the centre screen, allows you to input all sorts of data for display without needing gauges. Boost/vac, voltage, temps, basically any input your Motronic is seeing can be displayed.

That’s pretty cool! That would be pretty cool to display whatever you wanted to. I wonder if you could reprogram the b5 display to do this without any extra hardware..

I swapped the "new" replacement trans into the car a week ago and have been driving it to work to get miles on it and see if any weird stuff is going to happen. After driving the car with this trans, it's obvious there was something wrong with the original one from the start. This thing is extremely well mannered and works great.
With nothing to do on the car at the moment, naturally it's time for a science project!
A year or so ago Alex gave me a junk 4kq trans so that I could try another one of my harebrained ideas: replacing the Torsen center diff in my automatic trans with the air-locker from the 4kq. I fully realize the chances of this working are next to zero, but no way of knowing if you don't try. On that note, here it is.... FOR SCIENCE!!!
Here are the two before starting. I think the 4kq box weighs 1/3 as much as the.. uh.. "big boned" automatic.
After a few hours of fighting with a fastener on input shaft of the 4kq trans which was preventing splitting the case (ultimately solved with a drill), here is the aftermath:
And yes, I did buy two new drip pans just for this little project
Here are the two center differentials side-by-side. The top one is the Torsen from the auto box, the bottom is the locker from the 4kq.
The most glaring issue is space. The tail section of the auto trans would have to be extended 3-4" to make room for the locker.
The next issue is the splines for the input and output shafts. The spline going to the rear prop shaft on both is really close, and could likely be massaged to work, but the input and forward output splines are a whole different story. Not even close.
So there you have it, if anyone else was dumb enough to wonder if you could swap a 4kq Getrag locker into a ZF 5HP19-FLA, the answer is
NO.

I'm picking up a repairable parts 80q soon... Watching you go wheeling in a CQ is putting bad thoughts in my head! So tempting....

Do it!! if you keep the manual trans you will want a v6 or v8 for the torque.

I've never been one to name cars, but my coworker just came up with a perfect name for this thing and I love it: Bergziege
(mountain goat in German)

x2 on the quattromog... but the Bergziege is pretty cool too (once you know what it means).
This car just keeps getting cooler, love the updates.
Also (forgive me if I've asked before), where did you get the 'can't catch quattro' sticker?

I’m rethinking my naming decision. Since opening this kind of thing up to the internet always goes well (looking at you Boaty McBoatface), I think we need a poll.
1. Bergzeige (mountain goat in german)
2. Quattromog
Post your vote!
The sticker came from Jack Dean circa 2011, but I just found it on eBay UK:

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you're polling us... quattromog is an awesome name. Plus, then you could \3D print a badge in quattro script...
