I have a very long list for saturday but I'm 99% I'll be up in the Audi. Only thing is my boost leak turned out to be my TB-intercooler hose so I'm going to take this opportunity to finally revise my TB, eliminate my adaptorthrottle cable situationDE80q wrote:You know Im down to drive for you again. Maybe this weekend when we get together. Do a little driving, a little tuning, and then a little work on the bandit.
Also, uber rich running was caused by... Air temp sensor wires, they're the one thing in the harness just a little too short. That's on the saturday list, at least my issues were easy to find.

I would be interested in that. I've been half assed looking for an MC2 cam but it's not a financial priority for the car at the moment. I know that this MC1 profile is going to become a bottle neck at some point, but I'd rather get to the point I can safely reach that point before I drop more money on more power. I still need working creature comforts, tires, an alignment and ideally a bunch of rear suspension work.AngryTaco wrote:Just wait. Re: Shawn's '89 200 Avant: Backyard engine build running
This project is taking longer than I wanted it to which I was expecting
I couldn't find an OBDI VR in the yard so I got an OBDII VR throttle body and cut everything off it and built a new TPS sensor mount which will accept my OBDI ABA TPS. It's set up so it *should* give me full range of throttle travel, clear the fuel rail, and also allow me to use straight 3" piping all the way minus a 2"-3" reducer off the turbo outlet. Even the turbo inlet is 3"
A friend I trade work with has this plasma CNC machine so he cut me a flange to make an adapter plate out of. MUCH faster than the hole saw/right angle grinder I used last time.

This picture shows how much more tilt I was able to get with the VR throttle body. Moving the TPS out away from the body cleared more of the intake manifold and made this possible.

Instal tomorrow, thanks for reading along!

Re: Shawn's '89 200 Avant: Backyard engine build running
Got a bunch of stuff knocked out this weekend! First off I finished my VR throttle body instal, and while I had the intake manifold off I installed my Siemens 830's. And then I figured there's no point in big injectors without a big fuel pump, so I put my new pump in too
It's actually quieter than the factory pump was! I used Mushasho's instal guide (http://theprojectpad.com/viewtopic.php? ... &start=425). For my install I also needed to shave down the plastic reinforcements from the factory basket after I cut it off to allow the fat end of the Walbro to fit in. I didn't get any pics but it's pretty obvious when you get in there, just have a dremel handy.
Also, the factory fuel line didn't fit the new pump, so I went to Advance hoping they might have a special flex fuel safe fuel line. Nope, so I just bought 2ft of fuel line the diameter of the Walbro stuff. It doesn't look like it's going to be an issue according to a quick search, what do you guys think? Then I cut the factory fuel line just below the end of the banjo on the wiring panel side and left the factory black line over the banjo as a spacer to make the fuel line fit.
Then we went out for a drive, I made a rookie move and destroyed my fuel map without saving, so I had to recreate it and Ben and I had to push start the Audi a couple times, but I got a good tune on it and got it smoothed out and it runs great! It was late, so I got the cruise about where it needs to be, and we did some pulls, I basically just made sure it dropped to ~10 around 5psi and got that evened out across the rev range, cleaned the whole thing up a little more and called it a successful night. It was really just to run the car and get a base fuel map as the car won't get beat again until the new trigger setup is in this week

I am still considering it. I have to speak with the cam grinder first and see what they say. It would definitely be better for consistent power and more tuning capability. Less things that can go wrong and less deviation between cylinders.vt10vt wrote:I would be interested in that. Re: Shawn's '89 200 Avant: Houston, we have enough fuel
So I drove the car to work today, ran great. Went to go out at lunch and it started and idled great, get 3-5min into the drive and it starts cutting out, won't idle or hold rpm, got it back to te shop by riding the shit out of the clutch and revving it like crazy.
Symptoms: low-no fuel pressure. I pulled the access port for the pump, lines inside we're all attached and no holes or years, wires looked fine too. I changed the fuel filter, no change. With the regulator I can decrease pressure but I can't get it to go above ~22psi, so to me that means its working. The pump is making different noises, sometimes it sounds ok and sometimes it sounds really grumbly. I guess pulling that to check it is the next step?
Think I may have just got a bad pump?

check the wiring/relay to the battery dude
Re: Shawn's '89 200 Avant: walbro 400dead in 24hrs?
Shouldnt you be running about about 45psi or 3-4bar?
Is it only making 22psi with the car running shut off? If its shut off you have a problem. Check your voltage going to the pump.

Re: Shawn's '89 200 Avant: walbro 400dead in 24hrs?
Thank you guys for the input! I came in this morning and first thing I checked was the wiring. With the pump running and the car not, I should be seeing 5xpsi, it's set above 3bar from my other injectors and there wasn't really much point in turning it down. Verified 12.68v @ the terminal for the pump, plugged it again and listened to the noise it was making for a minute... didn't really sound like a BAD pump...
So I opened up the access panel again, hooked up the feed and return lines with that ring thing out of the way and shined a flashlight into the tank and turned the pump on. Gas spraying EVERYWHERE under pressure!! Looks like I found my issue, that advance auto shit fuel line must have sprung a leak under the pressure of this pump, and the pressure I'm getting at the regulator is just what is able to make it past it.
I'm going to run out at lunch and hopefully find some hose more suitable... suggestions?
I need the Audi on the road because this is what's happening outside right now

I'm pretty sure Shawn and I just figured out what happened. He asked for fuel line at the counter, and thats what he got. Standard fuel line rated for like 10psi. Now he just needs to grab the correct diameter fuel injection line, and he should be good to go. Woohoo!

Yeah, why, in this day in age, an auto parts store stocks low pressure line like that, much less that's the first thing they assume you want, doesn't make any sense to meDE80q wrote:I'm pretty sure Shawn and I just figured out what happened. Also, lots of fun today but lost the exhaust.. I mean I still have it but it's not on the car haha. The deep snow kept knocking it off, and when I went to re hang it the V-Band clamp broke when I tried to tighten it back down. Have another on order from Summit along with a second muffler. However, between the fumes and the 02 reading crappy being so close to the exhaust outlet, it's pretty much not drivable at the moment. Oh well I had my fun!
While out wreaking havoc, I managed to do my good deed for the day; towed a Civic out of a ditch while a cop held up traffic laughing his head off the whole time! I pulled it out first try without even locking the diff, hopped out of the car and yelled "It's got quattro!!" The cop burst out again and was like "It's that Audi technology!" Great time

Hey, there was a question mark at the end haha I had bad pressure, the pump was making weird noises, and that's the last thing I touched. Not out of the realm of possibility Glad it wasn't actually the pump obviously, but I actually had to run the pump with the access port open to really see it happening as I couldn't find a split with a visual inspection; I actually had to pressurize it with compressed air to find it.mushasho wrote:how quickly the Walbro was proclaimed dead as the first thought...
Sweet! Thanks for the link! I'm guessing it plays well with E85? That's my main consideration long term, besides it obviously holding the pressure.Mcstiff wrote:I've found that Gates Barricade holds up much better than the standard "EFI" hose and it seems to be available via NAPA easily.

Nice work Shawn. Awesome that the parts store have you that stuff, thanks guys! Lol. At least you'll be sorted (until next time of course). Good job towing the civic, you just made someone's day.
So once you sort out the exhaust, what's left to do? Tune and drive?
