last night was a little slow, but meh, some things are just time consuming, like installing these...



started out by working my way up through the drill sizes to the right one for the tap required to thread the helicoils in.


then i put the head up in the drill press and used special tool that sits in the jaws of the drill press and holds the tap straight. i got busy and didn't get a chance to take a pic of that part.

then after a thorough cleaning, in with the helicoils


i like the sight of this...


i also got the oil filter housing on, and note the adapters from the 18x1.5mm threads to AN-10 fittings. i'll be working on some lines soon.


i have a second metal HG coming today from 034 HQ so that i can rob it's middle shim out and lower my compression a tad. the head was milled .007'' and i also figured dropping the compression a tad while i'm at it would be worth the extra $$ and time

today i'll be getting the head put back together and hopefully have my box full of parts needing to be cleaned in a hot parts cleaner back and i might... just might, be able to sink the engine in tonight 8)

Ok maybe I missed something but why did you helicoil for studs??

Nope, just a complete soaking over night in CarbonOff would make it look brand new again.

Beautiful work Derek. I love seeing a quality job done right. I'm sorry to hear that the engine was in such poor shape when you took it over, but it looks it'll turn out well. When can I put my name on the list for a ride?

Glad I'm not the only one coming to that realization. :wink: I feel like a total hack when I look at this thread. It does egg me on to do a nicer job though. Can't wait to see the final product.

well, i'm back home in oregon, usually i feel happy about now, but i'm kinda bummed that i have to wait to get back on to finishing my car...:(

anyhoo, here's the progress of yesterday..

started off the morning of a goodie shot when the rest of the intake valves showed up 8)


these two valve cover bolt holes were also stripped out....


so after the valve guide seals were installed, i slid all the valves in so i could work on installing the springs and retainers..


this tool works way easier of you have a friend so props to dan for hangin out and helping with the install of these..

this is some high temp copper anti seize my buddy trevor got me from his work, it's good enough for helicopters, so it should be good enough for this lil' ol' audi





the heart in front of the patient...


next it was time to install the flywheel and clutch once the engine was out of the stand...


installed the pilot bearing first


then flywheel


then HD clutch



engine bay ready to accept donor heart


a little lower


a little wriggling to get it in past the uncut core support..


settled in snug as a bug in a rug (that's a stupid saying that i was taught when i was really young)


man, that red is bright!


double vision!! got my AAN headgaskets from 034. you could do it yourself or just get one premade from 034 to save possibly damaging the real thin inner metal shims (of which i slight boogered on up and luckily had the spare to use), so use caution or have the pros make one up for ya


so i drilled the rivets out to rob the middle shim out to lower my compression a tad..



once the gasket was in place and the head all assembled and ready to go, i put the exhaust manifold on to make it a bit easier than trying to get those silly nuts underneath on in the car and then slide the head down the studs and in place



7A cams in place after i torqued the head down...


then put all the new lifters in and cam caps on.. man, that's kind of a pain making sure every last one is in the right place. i certainly reccommend who ever plays with the 20v's to make sure and take the time to mark them and make sure they all point the right direction for reinstallation. i had some bearing assembly lube left over so i that got smeared on the lobes for no real good reason


then the water manifold was put on. note, the rusty fitting is coming off for a cleaning and replacing of the O-rings, it's just easier to do on the head that holding the manifold itself


man, i'm one happy camper with how it's turning out 8)




also, the_natrix nate stopped by the shop last night as he was relatively close for work (vs. being in canada where he lives most of the time), and it was cool to finally meet him after about 4 years of knowing him in my crazy head..lol

he oversaw my installing of the cams and stuff and just chatted with my buddy trevor and I for a couple hours and even helped push our numerous dead cars at the shop so we could close up for a couple weeks 8)

The exhaust manifold and WG aren't loooking as good as the rest of the engine.

still looks really good though. Do you get paid for working on your own cars?

What are you going to do for an IC?

the exhaust manifold will heat cycle back to regular ugliness, but the WG cap is coming off and likely getting polished or painted.

i wish i got paid for working on my car, luckily i had a lot of time on my hands this week

IC option is back maybe 4-5 pages. 944 unit.. from the car your calipers came off of i'll be fitting it next time i go down. i need to get to the right hoses and pipes for the plumbing

Try using that tool on the 20V head (inline-4).It such a PITA! :frustrated:

thanks! i think it's gonna easily rival my white car. i had a guy once who visited me and checked out my alpine car and he commented something about it being as nice if not a little bit nicer than bernie strub's black 4kq that was 2B's #1 turbo converted 4kq, if that be true, then i'm very stoked 8) i can't wait to get her on the road and get some sweet wheels on it, HID equipped euro headlights, v8 tails, and a certain under bumper spoiler 8)

either the old spoiler off larryflint's zermatt car, or the v8q spoiler off my now ruined alpine bumper, of which only the top half is toast.
