Loxxrider's 200 20v Revver: See you on "The Project Pad"
Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Plan for the next while
I want a dog box 01E in the worst way! Sounds like a good choice!
Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Plan for the next while
heh, yeah... dog box, sequential 01E would be the stuff of my dreams. Right now I just need one to hold the power and get the fitment and install over with. Then it will be time to upgrade the box. Baby steps!

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Hey guys, I'm starting to look seriously for a WIDE FIRST 01E. I think I have a few options. What would you do?
Right now, there is one local to me from a 3.0l A4 (6 speed) for $1k shipped. Knock shipping off of that and I'm probably looking at $850 to $900. I believe its known to be good and comes with shift rod.
There is also one with blown 1-2 shift collar issue and I can get it for $500 shipped. Then I'd have to buy the 01E rebuild kit for ~$900 and I'd be $1400 in, but with a fresh tranny.
There is also a nice one built by Scott, but I doubt its still available... I can't really be spending too much right now, but I NEED to get an 01E in the car while I have the engine out
Any other leads/thoughts?

That A4 one is probably the all alu case 01E, supposedly not as strong as others?
Have you checked car-part.com? Do you need a 6sp? If not, check with Weldon maybe?

Ah I should have mentioned that it MUST be a wide first version. I can live with 5 speed as long as its wide first. Good to know about the alu case Peter... I definitely do not want that. I'll check car-part!

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
I wouldn't get too hung up on the wide for now Chris. If you can get a narrow five from weldon for 325 shipped, I would jump on it. You may not want to just pound on first with a two step but the gear set is still stronger than the o16. If two years down the road you are busting the narrow, you are out of school in the field and dropping in a wide six isn't a big deal. The hard part is getting the axles linkage and and speedo working right now. You can easily drop in a tranny in an afternoon after all the legwork is done. Dimensionally they are the same.
I do not regret putting the narrow five into my car as an interim box. I am on my second one and I believe the 1-2 collar died on my first 01e due to sorting out linkage and gates. I would have been pissed if I had a grand into a six and goobered the collar. My current five is awesome. It has eaten the rear axles anddiff mount without a hitch and also the two day track day. I see no reason it won't keep going for a long while.

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Hmm, I know I can get one from Marc for a fair price too and pick it up in Carlisle... so that may be the answer. I kinda had it ruled out because I really hate doing things twice, but now that you mention the linkage issues and such it might make sense... what I'm most concerned with is that the wide and narrow use the same clutch, and they do correct?
This means I'm going to need some mounts from you my friend

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Yeah, they are identical for all practical purposes. Your clutch will work in either box. Fine tune the swap with the narrow, and swap in the wide later when one falls in your lap, or you have funds to buy one. My 1st started to sound bad after about 1000 miles, but I think most of that was due to building 33psi in first gear with the brake to tune at speeds that would not put me in jail. If you can show even the smallest of restraint with abusing the 1st gear, you will be fine for a while. Like I said in the earlier, while it is the narrow gear, it is still wider than what you have right now. With BAT setups, boost built in 1st is minimal anyway, and with SEM, you can always tune out boost in the lower gears.
Are the outter CVs on the 200 20v the same spline on the hub as the urS? If so, if you get me lengths, I can solve the axle piece of the puzzle for you pretty easily.
I am pretty sure the rs2 mounts would work in the 200 with an 01e as well, as I used the 200 mounts on my torsen 200 tranmission in my URQ. (follow the logic???)

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Chris,
I wouldn't worry too much about breaking a narrow first gear 01E. I have probably 20 6000 rpm 26psi launches on my 016 where three tires spun all the way through first gear. It's still hanging in there and a 01E should be stronger.

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
The 016's problematic gear is 2nd, then 3rd and then first, in that order. Jim and I had the same experience with the 35r based turbo. They could put up with 26psi for years without a problem, but the jump to 28psi would do them in at around 480whp. That is all they needed. I went through 3 of them in a 2 month period.
Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Yeah Blake, Scott is the guy to go to for 01E stuff or you can rebuild yourself.
Anyway, I have another something to throw into the equation...
Wide first 01E 5 speed
cryoed/ stress-relieved mainshaft and first and second gears
front torsen
high bias torsen center
~$1500

That sounds like a nice trans.
I guess we'll see what happens with mine. Looks like I'll be stepping up a GT3082R or 35R this summer.

ah nice, you need to post some videos of your 200! I have never seen anything of your car since I joined except for some pics of the turbo install.
I should also mention that that tranny has never been installed either.

Yes the outer splines are the same, I have urS strut/bearing housings on my Titan 200 with 016 axles

The 01e tranny mounts are quite different, in the way that they bolt to the tranny and the subframe. When I was in the planning stages of an 01e-to-200 swap, I pulled the tranny and mounts from my green S4, and cut the tranny mounting points out of the ur's subframe to be welded into the 200 sf..Now what I am unclear on is if you can pull the mounting ears off of the 01e, and bolt in your existing 016 flanges

Re: Loxxrider's 200 20v: Looking for an 01E, advice?
Sorry, I meant that his 01e/01a clutch kit and flywheel would work in any of the 01e tranmission whether it is a 5 narrow, wide or 6 speed.
The logic was not followed
The URQ originally came with an 016 like the 200. When I put the torsen 016 out of a 200 in my URQ, I used the 016 torsen tranmission mounts. They use the two bolt transmission mounts like the 5kq 4kq, cq, s2, or rs2. They were plug and play. Even though the subframe is quite different on the type 44, the transmission points appear to be the same. This means that a plug and play solution would exist for the 200 as well, in the form of rs2 transmission arms.. The rs2 mounts are in my URQ with my second 01e in there now.
I still find it interesting that you got away with using the 200 axles. The 01e has a different offset, and width when compared to the 016. It must not be enough of a difference. Have you logged miles on this setup?

Well the thing is, its ~$900 just for the rebuild kit (Scott supposedly has the lowest price). There is a good DIY video tho from what I hear...
