Once you identify the various sensors in the harness it really isn't THAT bad.

Funny you posted those pics Chris, no sooner I had posted I went straight to your build thread

the good thing here is I have a 7a and 3b harness to splice while my car is still being driven. The more I look at the grime and rust the more I get overwhelmed. But I bet once things start coming off it will go smooth. Next step is to get it mounted to the stand.

It will go quick nick, before you know it you'll be putting 20k on the motor, unless you hang around. Hank Darin or me.... Then it might be more like 20k into the motor.....

That's look pretty daunting, but you'll get through it. I think once you take every thing off and do it piece by piece it will be more manageable. I think you'll definitely want to replace as many seals and gaskets as you can else all the work you'll do to get it clean will be wasted if it's still leaking oil and fluids.

I plan on doing the pan, valve cover, exhaust, intake, coolant rail, timing belt kit. My hope is to make sure the torque is good on the head but leave it as is. If I absolutely need to it will be pulled, but it would add 200.00+ to my budget. My goal tonight is to get it on the stand, get some PB blaster and soak it.

You should also do the front and rear crank seals and I'd consider the cam seal as well.

I put those on the list of things to pickup. What about the rear bearing?

Update:
Got the motor on the stand. It may seem like an easy task and I thought it would be. An hour later it was safely off the picker and resting level on the stand.
My dear wife was doing a vocal session at a local studio and so on I went. Starting with the intake side, I proceeded to take things off. Only one bolt has stripped and gratefully it didn't impede me to keep moving forward. Taking the fuel rail off was the most nervous part of the whole thing and luckily none of the injectors broke. Two of them are still on the head but they should come off easily enough (fingers crossed). After getting the bigger mounts and pieces off I proceeded to take a pick and scrape. And scrape. And vacuum. And scrape. And vacuum. Scrape some more. Get the stink eye from... Scrape some more, vacuum then done for the evening. This thing looks like it has been sitting for a while but turned over by hand freely. I think there's still oil in it but haven't pulled the plug yet. That'll be after the exhaust side has all been removed. Let's just hope I can put all this stuff back together!! I plan on bagging all the bolts and labeling as best I can. Then going to the local bolt supply and picking up as many new ones as possible.
Next step is to clean up the garage so there's no more tripping over things and somehow get more vocal sessions setup for my wife

Any suggestions on how best to paint the block? I was thinking of doing some Rustoleum inhibitor and then finish it with gray like Chris(Wheeljack) did. Also need to try and find someone local with a media blast booth to clean up some of these parts so they look pretty.

Cylinder One

Cylinder Two

Cylinder Three

Cylinder Four

Cylinder Five

Scrapped

The mess. This doesn't account for everything else in the shop vac.

Nick, go down to the lab and snag the red cabinet. I think it has pretty aggressive media in it, but you can always get some bead from harbor freight. Do you have air?

Woot, thanks! I have a small compressor that should work. If it breaks that will give me a reason to upgrade

You may want to put new glass in it. Pexi or lexan works well if you aren't willing to get real glass. Might take you a few minutes to use the glass in there as a tempalte, but you will probably save time in the end.

If you have rock gaurd it works great to keep the glass from frosting too quickly....

may as well upgrade now. I have an 80 gallon 1 stage 220v compressor and it has a hard time keeping up with constant use. it realisticly runs fine for 5 then let it catch up for 5 and so on. a little compressor will only run for about 20 seconds, then 5 mins to catch up, ect ect.

Thanks for the tips

Hank I took the existing heavy stuff out and put in what I think was #8 glass that was in a box right by the booth at the lab. I'll probably end up with some less expensive media and hopefully upgrade compressor sometime this year.
No real progress on things today other than cleaning up the garage and getting back to organized status.
Thanks again Hank, having a booth in the garage is a big upgrade to the garage build!

Careful with the glass. I don't know what it was, but it is a reasonably good idea to have safety glass in the cabinet. Your face is pretty close to glass when you are blasting, and if a bolt or small pebble hits the glass just right, you could have an eye full of glass.
