BIG brake options
Re: BIG brake options
Hey Dave...having had both...the 996 calipers on my 91 200 20vt and now having 996tt big blacks on the UrS6...I would push you towards the big blacks...way more stopping power....with the 996 calipers, sometimes I would get those moments of " oh this is gonna be close"......with the 996tt...no
worries at all.

Re: BIG brake options
Rotor update, I am going to be about $1200 into a set of custom two-piece floating rotors from Coleman. 336x32 is what I ended up going with. Tough when A8 Rotors are $80 each, but I am hoping to get more consistent brakes out of the deal. The A8 rotors are really poorly vented.

Thanks for the update Jim. If you look at the A8 rotor, is there enough meat to drill out the vents bigger? and is there also room around the inner part of the vent to clip on a simple fan to push a larger volume of air through it? I know drilling the vents may not help as the drill will smooth out the porosity and abillity to cool better. I dont have those rotors so I cant see what they look like. can you take a few pictures of the rotor off the car, and on the hub showing how much room there is on the inside over the hub to see if a fan could even be an asset to help?

Re: BIG brake options
That is the problem, the venting is on the outside of the hat, so it's impossible to run brake ducts.

those can be covered pretty easily.

Re: BIG brake options
08+ E350 rotors are 322x32mm and rear vented, but the rotor centerline is ~5.8mm deeper than the A8 rotor. You could space your caliper adapter off 5-6mm from the rotor to account for this. You'd also have to machine the center bore from 67 to 68mm. If your calipers can fit a 32mm rotor this might be worth looking into.

Re: BIG brake options
yeah, sorry Jim. I wasn't thinking when I saw that picture and thought the holes next to the hub were the problem. It didn't dawn on me until I was headed somewhere that the vents were on the outside, and not the inside. we need a Brainfart emoticon. 1200 is pretty hard to justify for me for just rotors.
If that other option can work, that may be a good reason to build the adaptors to the correct dimentions. thanks for the option Alex

Re: BIG brake options
Any thoughts on these calipers?

For the price (~ = Porsche calipers) they're higher quality and could provide more rotor options.
EDIT:
Or these:

Re: BIG brake options
Those vaguely say they use Porsche pads, which solves one problem, but Alcon parts and service is notoriously shitty to deal with over here. Like 4-6wk lead times for caliper parts if you can even get an order placed, etc.
