thanks for the IP lookup suggestion Carl. I just added the code silently in the background. I've still got it set for me to review regitrations manually, but will monitor how good it is at picking out spammers and go from there to making it automatic if it works out.

the ip check code is doing a really good job. so good that I'll just leave admin approval on accounts enabled because chances are good the emails I get are for real accounts so far. for reference, if the score is over .9 I'm booting the account. some sampling of the offenders:
