Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Nice acquisition! I've got a spoiler and a corrosion free URQ with lots of available parts including the body. If you need anything, let me know.

Some new tools in anticipation of doing sheetmetal work (didn't want to TIG in sheetmetal). MIG welder...have been really happy with my Eastwood TIG, so I figured I'd give their small MIG a shot. Still need to buy a bottle of gas for it.

Wish some more oddly warm and sunny spring weather in Seattle I took the chance to soak the seats in some more coconut oil. The driver's seat is pretty much a waste of time since it has so many cracks/tears/etc but whatever, I'll soften what's there.

Would've gotten more done this weekend if I hadn't spend the day today drooling over this beauty:
Also got to hear wonderful stories from the driver Andy Pilgram, crew chief Tony Callas, team owner Jochen Rohr, and Porsche author Randy Leffingwell. They fired it up and then removed the bodywork so we could all poke around at the drivetrain.

Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Do yourself a favor and pull the fenders. I thought my car was rust free in the front end and was advised by someone to pull the fenders(I was like meh why? This thing is clean!!!) and found a lot of rot on the braces.

Ended up pulling both sides and sand blasting/cutting the rust out and repainting the entire engine bay(and installing an AAN). Makes it easier when I repaint the entire car, dont need to pull the engine again.

Yeah, I've pretty much come to that conclusion and will be pulling the fenders and fixing what's underneath, even if I don't repair the fender itself until down the line.

Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Pulled the fenders after work tonight. The passenger definitely seemed like it had been pulled before...probably because of the accident it was in at some point on that corner.
First glance things definitely looked a lot better than I expected.

Scraped off the seam sealer and knocked away some of the metal to expose more rust. Still, overall I am happy that I didn't find more! It's all very fixable.

And of course I knew the driver's fender was shot due to the giant bubble. That broke loose during removal. I plan on picking up a replacement fender though.

Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Glad to see it is not worse!
Man, I really can't understand why they didn't galvanize these cars when they were doing others in the same time period. It seems to me like you might be better off if you strip it down, fix all the rust and body work issues, and get it repainted now rather than doing it later on down the road.

Yeah.... trying to avoid that route even though I probably should take it. I want to get the car to BBQ this year and drive it for a few years before I dive into a full resto with paint (so I can work on some of my other projects) . I'll fix the front and engine bay for now then I can do the exterior later.

So Alex, I am taking it that the inner fenders are the same from the CGT and you can use those parts, for replacing sections?

Yeah I think they're pretty much the same for any of the B2 cars. I'll probably just use new sheetmetal.

If you actually make it down here, I have interior parts for you
Your best bet is to find a brown 4kq carpet.. 85+.. its a much nice carpet! you know as your cgt has the same style.. I hate the old shag carpeting.
I am in CA for work and youre making me jealous that Im not working on my car!

Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
Been a while since I updated this...
Picked up a B2 partial front clip from Zarati a few weeks ago. I initially only wanted an uppper core support, but will probably use more to repair some of the damage done from the previous accident and rust. Might try and make it look stock but removable. Driggs had some ideas for this.
Between this project going slow and some other life commitments (got a Great Dane pup that has greatly hampered my garage time) I decided a few weeks ago that I would no longer shoot for the BBQ as a deadline. I want to do things right and not rush. I still plan on minimizing bodywork for the time being and coming back to the rust outside of the engine bay at a later date after the swap is done. So the small amount of garage time I've had recently I've actually spent on the CGT doing a few things since I want to make sure that's ready for another trip to Vegas.

In the mean time I'm still doing what I always do...collect and hoard parts
Got some goodies for this car coming on Friday.

Re: Alex's '83 UrQ Project
I usually post up deals I find, but I had to save this one for myself. A 3" custom stainless exhaust for an UrQ popped up on ebay for $400 + $100 shipping. I actually forgot to bid on it the first time due to a dentist appointment, but my luck nobody bid on it even on the 2nd listing. So $500 to my door and it was all mine! Very nice tig-welded 3" all the way with a small cat, resonator, flexpipe, Borla muffler, and V-bands. Somebody spent a lot of money on it and barely put any miles on it. If it turns out to be too loud it looks like I'll be able to make up a small 3" adapter pipe and be able to hookup the 3" CAC muffler I've got already.
