I really hope you don't have the same issue dozens of us have had with those 034 mounts separating at the seams. If it does happen, HPR Epic Mounts are a nice step up. Not sure what to offer right now about the 034 strut bearings, other than I hope their "improvements" have actually had a positive effect. They aren't much better than the motor mounts. Right now there isn't a lot on the market aside from solid units.

Otherwise, I love to see the work you're doing refurbishing your car. Looks excellent!

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm using 'street density' stuff?
I've never read anything about this issue, but then again, I've never done any research about them because I though it would be impossible do fuck up a rubber cylinder...
Anyway, even broken they're probably better than 30y old stock ones

I love that I'm now in the 'make-it-pretty-phase' and not the 'how-the-fuck-do-i-get-this-working-phase'

The problem you will have with the motor mounts is melting the right side mount. My down pipe is heat wrapped and I still managed to melt and collapse it. Make sure to make up a heat shield for that mount.

This little piece of paper basically says that my concept is acceptable for registration.
The process is not over yet, but I'm very stoked!

50-day Rush

The next step in the inspection process is 'end inspection' followed by 'registration inspection'.
And for that to happen the car will need to be in the same state as you would drive it in, and there some work to do before we're there...

There's some gaskets that need changing on the engine, so while it's out again I'm going to 'complete' everything from the windshield and forward,
And it's a lot of work to be done, so no time to waste here writing forum posts :hehe:

With the exception of the throttle wire, this is as far as I'm gonna go in regards to clearing out the enginebay for paint.
The rest of it isn't worth the bother, I'll just spend some extra time masking.


'New' harness needs tidying up and shortening a bit.


Grinded down the welds, probably acceptable after some filler

Next week I'm planning on tearing down the engine, not all of it, just as much as I need for repairs and paint.
After that the rest of the week will probably be filled with sanding dust from paint prep...

Master of documentation

This week has been a bit of a documentation-disaster...
I was going to do a video yesterday, but I couldn't get it shorter than 5min, so I said '**** it' I'll just do a normal update.
But now I realize that I bearly took any pictures at all, so what I'll do is share what I have, then give a few mini-updates through the coming week to get back up to speed.

I've been focusing on the engine this week, and started to remove everything so we can get to all the gaskets and stuff.

Ofc it went to **** within half an hour when I snapped 5/10 studs for the exhaust...


So I went out, bought a stud extractor-kit-thing. Which I immediately also snapped in the first stud.
The show must go on, right? Went out again and bought a second kit of what I hoped was better quality, yeah not so much...

So yesterday I spent ~4h and like 6 drill bits trying to drill everything out.
What I'm going to do is drill them out to M10, then use thread-inserts or whatever they're called since I already ordered new M8 studs and nuts.

Manifold cracked, just like all 10vts'. Gonna weld it up but I don't have the tools right now.


Bought new o-rings for the injectors since I new I'd be pulling them, looks like it was needed!

Winds of change

It feels like I've been kinda fighting an uphill battle for a while. Mostly because everything I touched I broke
But now when everything is off, and I've actually started putting things back on I might have a chance of making it in time.

There has been a lot of cleaning/painting going on this week. And most of the smaller parts are ready to re-install.
I wanted to put the timing belt back on, time ran out, but atleast now everything is prepped.

For the best though, need to find a waterpump o-ring first anyway

I've been 'polishing' all aluminum parts, but the intake was particulary satisfying.

Next week I'm focusing on getting the timingbelt back on, then if not mounted, atleast get the manifolds ready to be installed.

It feels like I'm getting closer, which is much needed since my own deadline is the last day of May.
And I still have a wiring harness to clean up and an enginebay to paint...

I didn't get everything I wanted done, but I'm pretty happy anyway because now all the annoying stuff is out of the way.

New belt, 'tensioner', and o-rings for the pump. Everything ofc cleaned up and painted.



Also got all my new studs back in. The thread inserts where a life saver!



Then I spent like 7h with a wirebrush just cleaning/prepping for paint.



Pocket screwdriver and a vacuum to clean around the sparkplug holes


Ready for paint!



Was gonna paint it yesterday but ran out of time. Will probably happen during start of the week.

Nice and clean intake.


And I also got my exhaust back from the welder and I can't see right through it anymore. Which is nice...


Still missing the correct injector-bracket for my engine, but I found another solution that's on it's way home.

Until next weekend the engine should be complete again, which is awesome. And I'll probably start tinkering with driveshafts and stuff.
But next weekend work will probably begin on the engine bay. Should be interesting!

Welcome back! It's been quiet the week!
The engine is basicly ready to be lifted back in! :cool:

Here's how we started the week...



Splashed some paint on the manifold.


FINALLY back on the engine!



Downpipe got some heatwrap.


Mounted the intake again.



Servo&Generator, ofc with new belts.


Then we broke out the pressure washer and gave the gearbox a good spray.
It also got some new oil, thought that might be a nice gesture after ~30 years...


The whole kit back on, even including starter and a new oilfilter


Also swapped plugs, the ones in the car was not right for this engine.


I was also going to make a new bracket for the oil-cooler, but that didn't work out...

I did get a hold of a bracket for the injectors, already painted and ready.
I also got wind of another oil-cooler. Not stock, but that don't bother me since I had to do some trickery with the lines anyway.

Also disassembled the driveshafts and got some paint on them too, and tomorrow I might even start working on the engine bay.
Next week will be about fixing the oil-cooler situation and then a whole bunch of prepwork in the enginebay.

My personal deadline set for the last of May seems a bit of, I might move it up a week or two for when the local racetrack opens up for the season.

Glad to see you wrapped the down pipe. You will still want to make a heatshield for the engine mount on that side. I have melted 2 mounts with mine, and its wrapped as well.

Got some time over today, so I slapped some paint on and re-greased my driveshafts.


And the heat-shield, needs paint, but do you think it will do?

That's pretty much how mine looks now, so you should be good.

I've also started a couple of other things. Sandblasted and washed the enginebay.
And I've also started ripping in to the wiring harness, because I want that done before the engine goes back in.

During next week I have a lot of work, so I'll mostly focus on the wiring and maybe start with some light sanding.
But we plan on painting next weekend!

The injectors need to be pushed in further, yes. Lubricate the o-rings and gently tap them down. I can get a picture if you'd like.

But then why does the bracket seem to be correct? :/

There will be a gap. The bracket is not meant to locate the injectors, but rather to prevent them from pulling out.

Yeah I shot them with some WD40 and tapped them in. They seem not AS far in as yours, but i guess that's because of the new o-rings?
I could push cylinder 2 in by hand and it made a 'pop', and then i tapped the rest of them in equally, and I don't know if I'm comfortable tapping any harder...

The gap seems weird to me, but if that's how it's supposed to be...

While comparing the images now it seems it's just my bracket that's a bit out of shape.
If you compare the injectors with the top cover they seem to be about the same

My plan on being ready for the end of May got destroyed when the paintjob took 4 times as long as planned.
I was planning on painting last weekend, but I don't know what happend, anyways
