drill holes in the subframe for that bolt head to sink down into? will that give you clearance??

I just ground the bolt heads away at an angle until they cleared.

You are correct about the ABS bracket- it will need to be cut off. The battery tray can either be trimmed to fit the intake (if you have a battery cover you can trim it to fit which gives you a nice spot for an ecu, fan controller, etc) or take it completely off. I opted for trimming the inside corner off and using the space to hide my fan controller.
As for the time/space conflict on the subframe, I raised the motor up just a bit to give them some breathing room.

Does the ABH not have a camshaft trigger stock? Mine does...I'm not using it though, perhaps it was added at sometime, I don't know.

I am so stupid. You're right. There is a cam sensor inside the passengers side distributor. I sold mine about 4 months ago and totally forgot about it. That is certainly a simpler solution than replacing camshafts ssuming it will fit with the airbox in there,

The one that's on mine is just like the ABZ one above...and is seperate from the distributor cover plates that I have on there.

Yeah. Could be used as just a block off. My ABH cams aren't threaded to receive the bolt that holds the reluctor in place. I have an ABH distributor with can sensor en route

Some mounting questions...
I tried to fit the manifolds in with the engine in place today and had a lot of trouble.
On the drivers side, the engine mount is in the way...

On the passengers side the subframe is in the way and the pipe from cylinder #2 needs to be brought in a bit...


Would the ABZ manifolds fit on my ABH heads? They appear to be smaller but I don't know for sure.

ABZ manifolds will fit, should just need to move some studs around- I tried both the ABH and ABZ manifolds on mine and found only the ABZ would fit well.

I figured out the exhaust manifolds. ABZ is most definitely the way to go…

Not a lot of room to turn down behind the motor but can definitely be done:

Now to figure out Motor Mount Brackets.
Here's the stock ABH mount on the passengers side…

The mounting spot on the bracket actually falls between the brackets for the coupe so I wonder if it might be easier to make an actual motor mount to meet the bracket where it falls on this side.

On the drivers side I can't get the existing mount to bolt up to the motor, I'll have to mock something up in foam core and have it fabbed.
I also hit the junkyard this morning and got a couple parts I needed. a new hood strut for the B4 hood - the B3 strut is about an inch shorter.
also grabbed a B4 throttle cable - Petar's V8 coupe build mentioned needing one of those.
Oh yeah, I also figured out the Cam sensor issue. I totally forgot that the ABH passenger's side distributor had a built in hall sensor. Unfortunately I sold mine quite some time ago so I sourced another and installed it. it has the single window - exactly 10mm wide…

So supposedly I'll be able to get VEMS to work with the sensors I have (and no 60-2 trigger wheel).
I have no garage so I'd like to get the engine in the car before winter. that means I'd like to get the stuff behind it all buttoned up and then install clutch/flywheel and eventually engine.
I'm doing the whole hydraulics system while I have everything apart. new clutch MC/Slave, ABS delete and Vacuum conversion. I would like to get that all buttoned up before putting the engine in the way.

Looking good. The abh mount looks like it should be pretty straightforward to get to work. And fwiw that's the side that is the biggest pain as you have to clear the starter motor. The other side should be pretty simple with just some straight sections joined together. I put my abz back in my coupe a couple of days ago, and really wish I hadn't decided to turbo it. Bag of worms and all that. The exhaust is doable from those manifolds, just need the flange and flare to join the manifold, then a short radius 90 bend and should be pretty easy to see how to bring it all together from there.

I'm thinking I'll need to basically create motor mounts that are suspended down from the existing bolts with a homemade mount that is centered on the bracket spots.

I did a mock up on the passenger's side -- I could have this (very) rough mount holder fabricated to hold the Flexane Mount.



This could work.
Also, I worked on the sensors today to make sure everything lines up as it should…
With the Flywheel Pin right on the sensor (which I swore you could see in this pic)

The Cam sensor is right in the window…

Unfortunately, I'm going to need to make room for the starter ring sensor - the 01A doesn't have a hole there…

For the motor mount- I suggest making a custom arm from the motor to the stock mount. The reason for this is that the motor mount is a wear item so using an off the shelf part will make your life much easier in down the road for replacement, as well as afford you a number of different durometer mount options which are readily available.
For the slave- I'm running the original one from the 01a with my 01e no problem.

Arms would be better in the long run and you can use factory correct parts which are easily available and replaceable

any general machine shop can laser out the pieces. Both look like they would be a 4-piece mount. Very easily done.
Heads up: It will be cheaper if you draw the parts up in Autocad yourself rather than have the machine shop do it. Ask me how I know lol
