Now that I have decompressed from the trip to UrQ25 - and the months leading up to it, I started to look around and check how things are holding together. I have to say I was pretty happy lying under the car, everything looks to be in order, just as when I buttoned it up.
One of the reasons I crawled under there in the first place was to switch wastegate caps and springs. I had a drilled cap, and a bit stronger spring - yea I want a lil BOOST now already...
I swapped them and took a lil ride. I added about 3-4 more lb boost, up to maybe 13-14, still very conservative - but it is also about 103 degrees outside today.
The biggest improvement was actually the cracking pressure of the wastegate itself. The original spring had to be letting go at only a few psi, power delivery was very linear but it didn't have much kick. With the extra preload of the new cap/spring combo it builds boost much quicker, I finally started to feel a loss for traction off the line.
I will probably drive it like this for a couple weeks until I figure out how I want to deliver my added boost: MBC vs N75. I have to up the boost soon, I don't want to be over-spinnin' the turbo and sending all that boost out the 'gate
I had my first hit off the boost crackpipe today - that 2871r has to be the best turbo for a street driven 20v out there... It doesn't even know what lag is.

Not too much to report here lately, but something isn't right when a project thread falls back to page 10...
I had a little frustration building as I could hear an exhaust leak developing. I stoped driving the car for almost a month since it sounded like a piece of crap. the weather is far too nice to not drive the car so I broke down and went to work on it. I pulled off the grill and got it up on the ramps. Anyone that has seen my header / intake setup can imagine the nightmare that this could have been. The Audi Gods were shining down upon me that day, the first two nuts I touched were the culprit. There was no dark blowby and the gasket was intack so I could it in time. I was pretty relieved that when I started the car it was as quiet as ever. I had nightmares of cracked headers and broken studs...
I picked up a Hallman manual boost controller locally. It has the heavy spring and the ceramic ball, nice unit. I hope to get that plumbed once I get back in town from this trip.
Next on the list will be the 3" race CAT and the new muffler. I gotta keep it legal here in NV, and Im tired of changing exhaust systems twice in one day just to pass smog. I have a 3" Aero Turbine muffler replacing the Stebro unit.
Once the boost is up to where it's making some power I will take a run or two at the strip to see if my efforts on this rig have been worth it. If feels strong but I know a certain 5000CS that pulled pretty hard with a similar setup...

I have been searching threads about the MBC (manual boost controller) plumbing.
We chatted about this last weekend and we had some opposing thoughts on how to plumb it. I have the Hallman with the heavy spring and ceramic ball.
With the Audi wastegate which is the best way to utilize this MBC ? I had intended to apply boost back to the top of the wastegate via the MBC to act as having a heavier spring in the wastegate.
The other way we talked about running it was to install it in the large line running to the bottom of the wastegate. This would be limiting the boost that the bottom of the WG saw therefore letting the spring hold the pressure...
Which is better or more reliable? Im looking to start reaching towards 18lb and then tuning my way up to the 22lb range.

...and so he did.
WoW.
I had a little time to spend in the garage in between trips. I began to eye-up a spot to mount the boost controller. This seemed like as good of place as any. I works fine here, it will be a test of character to see if I keep from moving within range of the drivers seat.

A shot of the engine bay, everything seems to be holding up well since finishing it up in August.

I dialed in the boost today, the WG was letting go early and holding maybe 13lb or so. I have had the boost controller for a couple months, but hadn't taken any time to install it. After mounting it I crept it up to about 22lb, I might have heard a bit of detonation but the A/F looked good at mid/12:1 on boost. I think it will be time to start working on the timing if Im gonna keep the pressure. I pulled it back down to a nice 20lb and it ran like a scalded cat. It makes boost SO quick. So quick that I blew off my lower charge pipe. Thats tuning right? Up the boost til something blows apart and then come down a pound or two?

May I suggest that if you don't care who that someone is that you want to line up along side, that we go out next weekend and do just that. I'll run the Cayman S and you run the Urq. :-D That ought to be close enough that I would be able to give you a run for your money if I dumped the clutch at 5k and redlined all the gears. It sounds like a lot of fun and being that they are both your cars it would be a win win for you. Let me know what you think.

Sam
I hear ya, I do see ratio's in the high 11's through the range but it all happens too quickly to process by myself in the car. I really only did 2 or 3 quick runs so far. I will need a willing passenger next to me to go out and really get it dialed in.
I wonder if there is anyone in Vegas willing... 8)
