Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) IT LIVES!!!

Post by DE80q »

Things are progressing, I just dont have much to say yet. Got a bunch of little things buttoned up, but still need to figure out how to get the 3rd nut onto the WG flex pipe and downpipe. The way I wrapped it, I can not get a socket at it. Should be interesting doing it myself.

Major update to come soon.

looks like this will make it to Carlisle!
Image

Even though it didn't feel all that bad on the way to the alignment shop, the #s tell the tail
That is a lot of red in the initial setup!
Image

The MS system is running quite well, but is far from tuned. I will be spending a lot of time learning how, and tuning this setup. For now, it seems to be running on the rich side when driving. I haven really pushed the engine yet, as I am still breaking it in. So far so good!

See everyone at Carlisle!

Congratulations! I know how that feels to finally drive a long time project :) As for your alignment, most of the red was just your toe and that's the easy thing to adjust. That right front caster is a little more of a problem but the worst that may cause is slight pull (drift) to the left but it will also create a little more return-ability and that's a good thing. If you could get the left side to have the same amount of +caster you would notice some better high speed stability.

Thanks Dan, it has taken a little over 2 yars to get here, and feels awesome to finaly get to be behind the wheel. The throttle pedle is so touchy that its kind of hard to start off. I think I need to adjust the linkage a little to give it a little more slack. It will also help to get the tune to be better. So far the only problem I have noticed is that my gauge cluster isnt lighting up. Its kind of strange becuase it worked fine when I pulled it. I guess I may have missed a wire of somthing.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Bandit) THERE AND BACK AGAIN!

Post by DE80q »

Well, I made it there, and back again! Had a great time catching up with the members I have already met, and meeting quite a few new people!

The Bandit got there under its own power while drinking quite a lot of 93 octaine in the process. My fuel maps were off and I was running quite rich the whole time. To make it worse, I had forgotten to attach the boost referance on the FPR, so after that was done, things got worse under boost. :bangshead:

The other problem was I was only making about 4psi of boost. Turns out when I pulled the piping to finish mounting the power steering pump and remove the rubbing timing cover I had forgoten to tighten the clamp on the throttle body side of the blow off valve :curses: After getting that tightened down and a quick run down the street produced a nice 12psi in 2nd gear. I was happy with that and went back to the show. :)

I had spoken to Mark Swanson earlier in the day about looking at the data log for the trip up to the show, and he said "Lets just go for a ride later." before we had even moved, mark had made a few changes to my fuel map, and the idle seemed to clean up quite a bit. On the road, with his finger flying around the keyboard, he had me make a pull, and suddenly we hit a fuel cut(didnt even remember that was there :idunno: ). Turns out that Eric a tuned in a 15psi fuel cut into the MS. Well, after talking with mark turns out that when assembling the engine, I neglected to attach the lower pipe to the WG, and it was staying clamped shut, so the only thing stopping my little k24 from spooling even farther was the fuel cut. He proceded tune the setup as best he could with me basicaly having no WG :hammer:

By the time we got back, the A/F ratios were almost spot on, and engine was running very smooth. So here is a HUGE thanks to Mr. Swanson for doing this for me! The Bandit pulls hard right to the fuel cut, so I am extremely happy with it. Now I need to hook up the ISV, N75, and the refferance port on the WG. Should be interesting to say the least. I am still reading up on how to set up the PWM for the ISV. After that I will tackle the N75.

On the way home from the show, I got on it a little to get onto the turn pike. I hit about 10psi on the gauge, and it sounded like somthing had exploded under my hood, and was left with little power, and no boost. Turns out that the one coupler on the piping had decided to let go and come off. Well, that answers that question. I reattached it, and some what babbied it the rest of the way home. Looks like its time to use the pipe crimping tool I made up.

After the explosion, I started to get a whining from the drive train that I dont remember hearing before. It is only present when under load. It really doesnt matter what gear Im in, but the faster I am going, the louder it is. After talking it over with George, I have to check/replace my rear diff fluid, replace my carrier bearing(I already knew that was bad) and regrease all of my inner CV joints. If this doesnt take car of it, I may have to take another look into this transmission.

I would like to thank all those who have made possible for the Bandit to make it to and from the show. George(RS4Tech) for helping with pretty much everything, including getting me into this project. Shawn(VT10VT) for helping with all the wiring and the other little things that came with it. Eric(elaw) as with out him I wouldnt have this beautifly done MS ECU. Mark Swanson, What you did in 15-20min, would have taken me hours. I cant thank you all enough! Im sure I may have missed one or two of you, but believe me, all the help I have recieved has been greatly appreciated!

I will update as soon as I can with progress on getting this beast cleaned up, and working properly. I have a large task ahead of me for that.

Thanks guys. It has been one hell of a few weeks trying to get this there, and it made it. Nice part was being able to talk to the few others with 20vt cars to get some opinions on how to sort things out.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Bandit) GEEZ...

Post by DE80q »

Well, Monday night I drive the car to work. Things seemed ok, I just didnt understand why I was smelling fuel every now and then. Well Tuesday morn when I was getting ready to head home, I poped the hood to top off the coolant, and noticed a strange puff of black smoke from the other side of the car. I looked, and sure enough, the 90 degree hose end attached to the fuel rail was leaking from the swivel connection. Go figure right? Im just glad nothing bad happened while this was leaking. I now have two 90 degree ends and a 120 degree end on the way. Im not sure which will work out better, so I figured I might as well be prepared.

This weekend I will take the Bandit over to my parents again, put it back in the air, and check the oil in the trans. On the way to work monday, I listened very closely in 3rd and 4th gear, no noise. As soon as I put it into 5th, the whining started. The last car that did this to me turned out to be low on gear oil. Only thing I can figure is maybe my drain plug isnt sealing. That would suck as there are almost 3L of motul in there.

I will also tackle the tasks stated before. Then maybe I can get this thing to hold at peak boost, and really see how hard it pulls!

I am running the NG cam(mc2 with a lobe for the vacuum pump). Feels quite strong now. I dont know how well a regrind would work with the extra lobe.

had the same thing happen to me w/ a leaking 90* fitting. Was fine, unhooked it from fuel rail to pull/clean/reinstall injectors, and then it started peeing gas everywhere (big time). Mine was a cheapie ebay one iirc, so I bought a proper one at a local speed shop. Quality difference was night and day.

A properly reground cam will produce a night and day difference. I have ran an mc1, mc2, and the current one. There is much to be gained from camming a 20v

Yeah, you should be good with that cam. The 20vt stuff has been done to the moon and back!
