I'm at 475 miles just over the half tank mark. I don't drive a lot lately. It seems to be the best tank ever but I'm going to wait and fill it when I get to reserve.

I'm at 792 miles just into reserve. I'm going to fill up near work in the AM. It should be around 810 miles. This tank was 60% driving in 4th gear.

Traveled 820 miles, used 16.7 gal for 49.1 mpg. Next tank should be better as I've been changing the IP timing back and forth during this tank, (yeah, that again) until I found the sweet spot. I drove the car through the woods today on a trail I've been creating for over a year. No diff lock needed in spite of the hilly terrain and the all-season tires. I had to spin the steering wheel back and forth to avoid trees. It was an effin blast.

Nice results!
Best I've ever had was 500 miles on an 18 gallon tank of 91 octane from Madison WI to Cleveland OH. That was in my stock B6A4 1.8t. Also had a few tanks at 450 miles on that trip.
That said, this thread only adds to my desire for a 6-speed TDI quattro commuter car.

I've stopped messing with the pump timing and set it back to .83mm. It runs smooth, cruises nice, pulls hills without effort. I replaced the original Urq vacuum actuator on the rear diff. as the outer boot was torn. It was made in 1982. I put in the original part that came on this car from 1990. I used a brass retaining bolt instead of the steel pin & clip on the diff. lock arm. I'm going make a glowplug timer to extend the glow time during cold weather running. I'll use a simple 3-minute rotary timer and relayed switches to the engine GPs and the 3 coolant GPs. Still need a tachometer and the cruise control finished. I've been running without the fuel pump on and it seems to make no difference. I removed the non-return valve and the eTDI pump return valve I recently re-installed. It's all good now.

The lift pump probably has 0 effect on your set up.

The purpose is for utility and not performance. I installed it to keep the 12mm plunger happy, and for priming with fuel system work. I will use it in unusually hot weather though. I need to install a 3 way switch; on-off-momentary. It's obviously not for high rpm fuelling :-)

I have working cruise control now. It had 3 separate problems. I took the stalk switch apart and cleaned the contact surfaces. The vacuum pedal switches were disassembled and the O rings conditioned and flipped over.(no replacement necessary) The vacuum pump was seized, so I used a spare.

I finally put the Stebro on from my other car finally and believe it or not it's quieter now.

I'll try to make one later. I will say categorically that nothing sounds as beautiful as the inline 5 making music through it. The 4 cylinder is well; meh in comparison. :-)

I'll get to that soon; I need to install the center section also. Related to this, I've come to realize my gutted cat may be contributing to the noise + causing unwanted turbulent exhaust flow. I'm going to replace it and here's a few options:
1. straight pipe
2. diesel cat(new)
3.braided flex-pipe
4. combination of above
Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome. What length and what brand diesel cat? I need to figure that out.
In other news, I've advanced the pump timing to 1.00mm; this is where the power and mileage is. The mpg's drop to 45 at the lower timing settings. Now it starts cleaner, better mileage, and a little noisier. The stock lower engine cover and the padded knee bar on the '91 help some with the sound. I'll keep it at this setting for a tank. Still on the quest for 50 mpg. I set the tire pressures the other day(as everyone should do when the temps drop), 40 front, 37 rear with excellent results. The turn-in has improved and the rear follows well, not quite over steer, just less under steer. This car is a bit lighter than the original configuration and I'd like to get it weighed one of these days.

I'd straight pipe it and add a flex section, as long as your inspection shop doesn't put it on a lift...that should be safety only, but I know some shops are being shitheads with the new nys inspection regs.

I've used the same inspection place for 30+ years for a very good reason. They're a Harley Davidson repair shop who were the only ones who would inspect my '65 VW kombi with the glass covered headlights back in the early 80's. I've gone there since and will always. It's one resource I'm truly thankful for. So; that's no problem at all. My title is now for a 4 cylinder diesel as well.

I've been troubleshooting a frustrating, intermittent, power/acceleration problem and discovered a very clogged boost line to the LDA. I've been like WTF is it now? Easy fix; using clear tubing now and the boost gauge is tee'd into it the way it was. The oil seems to degrade the silicone boost tubing over time. It was like black smushy slime.

I moved the LDA boost line from the IM to the near the turbo outlet. The boost signal is quicker and stronger at the turbo than after the inter-cooler. Noticeable difference in smoothness of acceleration. Made a small adjustment in the boost valve.

Yep same thing here rich I found that clear tubing really saves time when diagnosing this stuff. I'm going to use it from here on out on everything I can.
