SO Mark and I chatted about the little squares and we thought the best explanation was that Audi found the bolts for the head galled the casting so they drilled a bunch of little holes and pressed in some square rod stock of something really hard to stop the galling. What do you think?

Nice work Mark, keep up the research for me and Ill see you at the shop tomorrow.

Finished up stripping the heads down at the shop today:

Haydn built a nice 'special tool' for removing the valve stem oil seals, works perfect :)

Image

I did manage to misplace one keeper though, no biggie, I'll order a pair from the dealer.

Image

While we were there some of the locals were having some fun at the shooting range so me and Haydn stopped by, we fired off a few rounds, too bad I cant hit the broad side of a barn. The shotgun did the trick though :)

Now that we're getting WAY off the track of my thread, here's a shot of "the kids" at home, along with Dan's BMW that I'm working on:

Perhaps there are set around each head bolt boss to prevent the clamp load from distorting the head. If they protrude from the surface, perhaps they allow oil under the bolt heads to prevent galling like you mentioned.

Either way, its elaborate manufacturing if they are there on purpose...

got the valves yesterday :)

My local engine shop apparently just got a flow bench (from their website it looks like they have a superflow SF-600):

http://www.superflow.com/flowbenches/index_316.cfm

I may swing by tomorrow or Thursday to figure out how to use it on my 4.2 heads :-D

Did it also come with an employee with 10 years experience using it?
If you only want to compare the change in valves fine. But porting a head with a flow bench is another story. At that point the flow bench is only useful with an experienced porter.

The whole point of using a flow bench is to figure out if your port work produced an improvement, definitely. Even if I suck at it, I look forward to playing with it.

pulled the coupe into the garage today to start the tranny swap. Wanted to do it on a lift but got impatient due to the semi-warm weather today :)

Its pretty much ready to drop, just have to take out the bolts on the tie rod bracket and should be good to go. I decided to pull the front struts while I was at it so I can install the KWs and return poor Peter's suspension!

certainly. I'd really like to run the glen with the coupe this year.

update: tranny is out.

side by side shot of the 01A vs 01E. 01E is bigger in pretty much every dimension:

Image

I will need to stop by Haydn's shop to cut some steel for the mounting arms. Also need to steal the clutch fork from his 01E as mine didn't come with one and its different from the 01A, specifically at the point it pivots at the bottom:

01E:

I got two extra 01E clutch forks on my spare trannys if Haydn seems unwilling to secumb to your pilfering. You know where to find them if you need them.

I'll take you up on that offer for sure. Let me know your shop schedule :)

Thanks for the detail on the clutch Marc, RS, YGPM.

Bolted up the 01E today so I can start mocking up the mounts. Used a pair of floor jacks to get it in position. right now the rear of the tranny is being held where I want it with a jack stand:

Image

some detail on the left and right side mounting locations:

Image

Image

CQ linkage vs. 2.7t S4 (I think Rube Goldberg was involved in the design process):

Image

mounting holes are the same on the shifter box though, so it looks like it will bolt right on :) (I wonder if Chris tagged it in enough places :-P )

Image

While I was in there I pulled the clutch and flywheel as I'll be installing an OE v8 5 speed flywheel and upgraded clutch as I seem to be on the edge of the spec stage 3+:

Image

Remember when I had that issue with the starter teeth catching on the aluminum flywheel? well it turns out the factory actually turned down the area behind the starter teeth on the OE piece:

Image

I think the clutch and pressure plate are definitely still usable so I might put them up for sale

Image

Image

Now, question time. Since the 01E doesn't have a provision for the proconten cable, is there any reason I shouldn't unbolt the brackets from the body (EG, do they stiffen the frame rails or anything crazy like that?):

No, the procon brackets do nothing to reinforce anything. I removed mine when the 6 speed was done. It is a lot easier with the trans out than trying to remove them later.

I just removed the passenger side procon cable from my CQ... ran the battery cable through the grommet and used the fastners along the sill to route cable back to the trunk... brackets don't look like they do much except add mass and make things harder to work on so mine are coming off...

Didn't really feel like working today so only put in about a half day before heading out to the garage. Really wanted to make some headway on the mounts (which was made easy with Haydn's Plasma Cutter :thanks:)

Started life as bits of cardboard:

Image

then moved my way to metal

Image

Image

Image

I might try to powdercoat them this weekend, then all I need to do is go pick up some appropriate length hardware. (my stainless supplies are running low, time for another order)

dont think I ever posted pics of the pistons/head post cleanup, so... :

Image

Image

I'm gonna call my local machine shop monday to get a baseline flowbench test and then go back when I've finished with the new valves/guides/port work and see what the change is.
