Can't come soon enough though! It is winter though, so I'd rather not drive it anyway.

Been a while since an update, so here it is!

Installed VEMS:

Image

Not too much to see here aside from the custom EFI express 2.0T/3B COP harness. Really looks nice and OEM-ish. They did an excellent job with this one and I like it much more than the other one in the sedan.

Alternator died in the Avant so I had to borrow the Sedans:

Image

Start tuning the Avant and all is going well. Car is running better than ever. Too bad the clutch is toast and I can't even really increase the boost. One morning I am out tuning and the clutch is somehow holding, so I start slowly increasing the boost and increasing timing a bit. Well don't you know I end up blowing the poor wagon's head gasket, lol. ~13psi boost and 13deg ramping to 18deg timing. I look behind me and see nothing but smoke and the distinct smell of burning coolant. Yikes/FML! I limp her home carefully which was only a min or two from my house. Shut it down, open the garage and now it's hydro-locked...push it in, lol. Stock paper head gasket...~350,000 miles!

Well, now it looks as though the engine "build" will be happening sooner than expected. Some nights following I get it all ripped apart:

The DICK nut!!!!!

Well there's the problem!
Image

Image

A little sloppy (perfectly acceptable for 350+k miles):

Cleaned up a bit:

New turbo has arrived:

New valves and turbo again:

And that's where I have left off. The head was dropped at the machine shop to have a valve job done and install my Ferrea 6000's, Supertech springs/retainers.

What can you tell me about mixing the Ferrea and Supertech components? I was under the impression that you can't mix and match.

Oh man this sucks! It's funny, that dick nut is the one I watched my mechanic "helped" me loosen which resulted in him bending my 2 intake valves. I will be doing my own teardowns from here on out lol.

Keep up the steady progress. I really like my COP harness from EFIexpress too. It looks like the same iteration I guess. I am surprised you the lack of boost needed to pop that fire ring though. Wow man lots of mileage too :) good job so far

Supertech springs and retainers can be used with Ferrea valves however Ferrea springs and retainers can NOT be used with Supertech valves (from what I understand).

Always enjoy seeing things being done right by you, nice pictures. The pieces look amazing and the avant is going to be a riot once it's together! Also I think it looks rather majestic rather than ugly haha.

How does that KKK flange work with the V-band? Does something hold the V-band in the recess, or does the flange get welded on or something? Is that flange two pieces sandwiched together?

the flange has three parts. the bottom part, then a two-piece top part that clamps and pulls the v-band onto/into the bottom flange.

Update:

Ordered some pieces to build a BBK. 928GTS calipers, D2 A8 323's and some pads. I still need to source some brackets or make my own.

Rods and new coated bearings are in:

Rotten fender removed and repaired:

Donor fender:

Picked up a new set of wheels to be used on the Avant. VW Motorsport wheels. 18X7.5 ET51:

Image

Since the wheels have a poor offset for anything buy a VW, I ordered a set of 20mm spacers to push them out to ET 31:

Image

And since the center caps are VW and Audi didn't make 56mm caps I made my own:

Image

Image

Just need to paint them gloss black:

Image

Epic photoshop:

New plate (and the wagons new title) with the assistance of Chris:

Last but not least. Cylinder head is finally done at the machine shop. Blasted, tanked, 3 angle valve job, Ferrea 6000 flat face valves, supertech springs and retainers and decked:

Look for more updates coming soon. Should be ready for Carlisle :)

who did the head work? looks sweet. Do many machine shops dabble in AAN/3B heads here in the northeast?

Hope you do make it mage.

Glad this finally got updated so I don't have to keep going on fb to look at beautiful avant pictures :P

My avant has big brakes and some suspension work, but now I'll have to put some rods in and go efr too if I want to keep up with the Sgambelluris. Oh and finish the sedan, but you still have some work to do there too!

Looks awesome nick. What paint did you use for that fender repair? I need to do that same basic thing with my 90, and the seam can be hidden under the mid trim.
