I can hear that VR6 consuming air through that intake just by looking at it. I hope it doesn't put the cab into a vacuum when driving. Looks waaaay nice. Keep the pictures coming.

Damn nice work. I never learn how to weld very well. Envious.

which side? intake or exhaust?

its brainstorming time, gotta get an equal length 6 pack manifold on the passenger side with dual WG's

thanks, its not easy keeping up with the quality chassis work :)

Ok the updates continue, while the intake manifold isn’t finished quite yet, it is time to start the exhaust manifold. The intake manifold will be on a short hold while we finalize the aluminum center support and intercooler location. Also waiting on a throttle body. Then we can complete the plenum and TB feed.

So in preparation for exhaust manifold construction we had to have a turbocharger to build it around. So I introduce to you the Holset HX-40. They are available in a six, seven, and eight blade compressor. I opted for the 7 blade compressor, a lot of research that I have done shows the 7 blade has exceptional spool and midrange flow. I also opted for the billet compressor wheel option, which will improve spool and flow that much more. This model is specifically known as the Holset Super 40.

I decided on a 19cm^3 exhaust housing without a WG provision. We are building a divided exhaust manifold so having a WG on the hotside is pointless as it would need to be deleted. The hotside has a 4” vband outlet. It’s a bit unique to the holsets. Cummins makes a DP flange in SS that’s fit perfectly. PN 3923943
The divided housings need to be ~25% LARGER than the undivided counterparts due to the large loss of volume where the divider is and a slightly smaller “plenum collector” before the turbine inlet. The 19cm housing is around a 0.96-1.06 AR garrett equivilent

Let the updates continue!
Exhaust manifold construction
I got a bunch of ex mani stuff from vibrant, lots of SS elbows and a tacked t4 collector. In talking with Jay @ Vibrant, he mentioned that while they don’t make a divided collector version, it can easily be divided with a plate. Easy enough so I had one on the way in no time. Turns out, the way the collector is oriented will not work by simply putting a divider plate as it would be trying to divide the middle two runners. So I spoke with Jay again, and before I got off the phone with him, he was working on a new product. Wooohooo! A few weeks later I had a correctly oriented t4 divided collector. So its attached to the turbo flange and turbo via zipties for mockup haha, and we can get started on the exhaust manifold. With the dp/exhaust tunnel done and all manifold materials here we are ready to tear into it.

Ive been in touch with Marc@EFI Express about a pair of Tial MVR 44’s. The new MVR replaces the v44 wg of the current line. They are better flowing and more compact than the previous versions. They are also water-cooled heads, which will be plumbed in via 4AN lines to help keep everything cool on extended track sessions.

Ive also started cleaning up the exhaust manifold transitions into the cylinder head for the smoothest possible flow.

i made a divided t4 for a vr6 before.. was a 12v but i used the stock exhaust manifold. the 3-1 pieces off the head.. then ran on tube form each manifold to their own divided sides.. worked well and very easy..

awesome project none the less

Update
A long time ago I acquired the touareg 3.2L oil pan and we finally got around to modifying it to better suit this build. The pan has been shortened about ¾” from the bottom of the sump and a stronger plate has been added to the bottom.

The subframe is definetley going to be heavily modified, well that has already begun but that’s a different post. There is a cross bar under the pan is shown in a few pics.

The t-reg has a nice baffle in the sump, right from the factory. So when we shortened the pan we welded the mounting posts for it right back on so its still fully functional.

Update

So I set out to build an oil drain adapter for my holset super40. the hot and cold side are pretty close to each other and it would be tough getting a large fitting in there. So I made a t4’ish sized oil drain flange and an extension for the an fitting to the drain line. The super40 comes on some pretty large diesel motors. The factory drain lines for most of these motors are 3/4 to 7/8” I have done an extensive amount of reading on the holset turbos and have found that they really do like the larger drain lines. The larger drain line allows the turbo to be less sensitive to the inlet oil pressure, as there is plenty of oil drain to alleviate internal oil pressure buildup. So the flange is a short extension to a -16AN weld-on fitting.

so oil drain line will be earl's 16an stainless hose to another male 16an weld-on on a 1" schedule 40 6061 weld-el 90 deg. into the top of the oil pan
