LOL. So true Aaron, when i started looking for a car I actually told Derek I didn't want a red car for that exact reason. But then this car came up and for a 4k the body was really nice and I couldn't pass it up...or it was gonna get towed away by Portland according to the seller.

:thanks: Ben.

Time for an update.
On friday Derek brought over his skillz and some tools along with some materials and started makin the exhaust for my car. Up until now the exhaust only consisted of manifolds (DUH!) and tacked together downpipes just to keep things from catching fire while we tried to get this beast to run.

While having a nice loud V8 is really awesome, it needs to be a little quieter and have a full exhaust. The plan we started with is to have the down pipes merge into one pipe witha flex pipe and then go from there out to the back. I'm intentially being vague right now because it's not done yet and I want the final product to be a semi-suprise.

Started off with finishing the downpipes (for now) by welding them up, installing the o2 sensor bung, and welding on the flex pipe with a v-band on the end. The driver side down pipe has a flex pipe in it so the down pipes can be one peice(think removal/installation). This is made from peices of the original down pipes and down pipes from a 2.7T. Pre cat delete.

To complete the rest of the exhaust the bulky cast alluminum rear diff mount brackets had to go. So they were ditched and replaced by some streamlined steel plate peices for much needed clearance.

I'll let you guys guess for now where this exhaust is going until it's done in a couple days and then I"ll post up pics of the finished thing. Uploading video to youtube now... i'll post it in the mornin.

Aluminum exhaust, ballsy. Let me know how long it lasts, I've always wanted to do the same but figured longevity would be short and expense high.

I ran consistent 1350F (pre-turbo) EGT readings for 2500+ miles on my vegas trip and didn't melt the exhaust off. Nor on the dyno...

Aluminium mufflers as well or just the tubing?

@mdg3369 - There's no doubt in my mind that the aluminum will stand up to the heat. I bet the down pipes could be made from aluminum and be just fine as long as thick enough material is used. I know that aluminum exhaust manifolds are big in marine apps and i believe there were some automotive apps in the early sixty's. Aluminum brake drums were even an option on early sixty's Pontiacs albeit they were steel lined.

@MikkiJayne - Aluminum mufflers were a thought of mine but for now it's just gonna be tubing with a nice stainless dual tip Derek fabbed up. If it's too loud to start with (really, really loud) then a muffler or mufflers will have to get added, or start with a resonator and see how that hushes things up. This car wont be driven all to often so i can deal with loud for now. Or until i get pulled over for loud exhaust.

@ Ben - Oh yeah.

What grade is the AL tubing you are using? I remember seeing Derek putting it on his car, I also thought "Is that going to work?"

Guess it did.

That's a good question and I don't know the answer. I didnt order the tubing but i'll try to find out.

Kindof late, but I ran 16gauge 6061 3" from the downpipe back for a good part of a year on my 600whp URQ with no problems related to heat. Driveways and crap on the road can be hard on them( a cardboard box took out a center section once), but the heat isn't an issue. The oxidation left on the top layer of the ID is much more resistant to heat..

Thanks for the info and the heads up Hank. I think I'll have to curb my habit of running over objects in the raod with my trucks while i'm cruising the audi.

Well, this exhaust has taken longer than expected to finish so getting it done over the weekend didn't happen as we had planned. The center section is done, and the rear section the goes from just behind the axles over the subframe to the tip is half done. Just need to complete the right side, add some braces between the center section pipes, throw on a couple hangers, and that should be the end of it for now.

This will get finished later today when D comes by to weld up the last few parts. Sure is nice to have such a good friend with with his type abilities and a TIG welder :D

Later on the down pipe will be pulled off and get a little grinding to smoothe it out just a little and then either wrapped or ceramic coated. I'm on the fence right now but leaning towards coated. I just need to look into the cost of coating first.

Time for more video...

LOL Katman. It's is loud for sure, but something will be done about that eventually. The exhaust looks way too nice and there has been too much time put into it to start modifying it for mufflers or resonators now. One thought is the use a throttle body or throttle bodys and a door lock actuator the make a cheap electronic valve that kinda chokes up the exhaust and quiets it down when it's not being romped on. Either just have a switch for it on the dash or set it up so that at somewhere like half throttle it opens up. Time to start scavenging the wrecker for more parts, YAY.
