GM ethanol sensor add vooltage gauge to show fuel temp?

Post by 88a5tq »

Hey all I've just gotten my flexfuel sensor working with VEMS on the 200 with Marc's assistance and now I'm looking into creating a second gauge that can show fuel temperature since it's my basic understanding that the GM 13577429 sensor delivers the temperature via voltage output separately from the frequency for ethanol content (as an aside I believe the sensors actually read fuel level instead of ethanol).

I've delved into trying to compile a gauge to show the fuel temp separately which I think I can use the road speed for but I need to probably edit the ini file to change the calibration number solely associated with that figure, if it exists. I've settled on a speed sensor calibration number of 190 which got me to my current 74% ethanol reading using y=mx+b and two data points I was provided for these sensors. That figure has been independently confirmed locally as well so big whoop.

As of the moment I do not have any actual (voltage,Farhenheit or Celsius) data points except that I found ethanol sensors normally show between -40 F or C and 257 F (125 C). No mention of voltage range unfortunately for that particular sensor found here https://www.innovatemotorsports.com/mtx ... e-kit.html. Well it looks like that was actually referring to the gauge range itself.

Just stumbled on to this sensor that senses temperature via ms values https://www.milspecwiring.com/FLEX-FUEL ... p_670.html (1ms,-40C) and (5ms,125C) so im assuming I'm again out of my depths :D I've also found the ms statements concerning temperature on other sensor spec sheets as well now. Looking like the initial source stating it was voltage is incorrect possibly.

Initially I wanted to see if I could read voltage levels for roadspeed1 (one I'm using) but perhaps what I should be looking for is how to read its sine wave length in ms to then create a gauge from??

I've been away a number of years while my block was being made more stout and I finally got converted to the end goal of e85 on this 3b after initially deciding to do so after 4 years when I tore it apart. I chose a machinist that was going through huge changes in his business :wah:  hence the delays..

Has anyone located or accomplished this in VEMStune? Currently my 190 speed sensor calibration is correctly showing 74% ethanol and my roadspeed gauge is displaying either 124 or 135 km/h the two times I've looked at it live or in a log. I have located roadSpeed numerous times in the 1.2.38 ini text so is that where I should be modifying the road speed gauge's reading from? My suspicion is I'll need to edit something in the portion of the ini file I've attached below probably. I'll do some tests before the day is out with that theory. Thanks to everyone that drops by and learns something or helps in some small way :flag:

PS just found this formula:
°C = [ 41.25 * Pulsewidth (ms) ] - 81.25

Apparently after setting up my anytrim it's actually referencing the 124 or 135 km/h which I didn't see coming. I'm not sure which setting I would modify in the ini after that realization.

I almost positive this is what I'm looking for to change the readings accordingly:

https://vems.hu/vt/help/v3/v3_speed_sensor.html

Also those two gauges, wheel speed and road speed, don't appear to read independently of each other in values so I'm looking in the wrong place clearly.

Out of curiosity - why do you care about the fuel temp? E85 in the winter?

I would imagine ambient temperature would be close enough to know, unless you’re warming the fuel to run it over the winter?

I thought about what I'd answer to this question and I really don't have an excellent reason. I like data and I'm more curious as to how the temperature of it changes during different use scenarios I suppose. I also am curious as to what the limitations are to VEMS concerning the wheel speed inputs and whether more data can be gleaned from from those circuits than what meets the eyes especially as what I'm looking at right now has not been discussed anywhere else with this standalone.

If it's something I can figure out through the ini files that tells me there's much more I can do there also. I saw other EMS could use the calculation I listed above for these sensors and I figured maybe there is a hidden feature here that others would find value in as well. I wish I had a better explanation lol.
