Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro - BBQ X Success
1983 Audi Quattro
Mars Red, Sierra (Beige)
DA900539
Options:
027 = Compliance with exhaust emission standards (North America)
253 = ?
560 = Steel sliding roof, manual control (North America)
749 = ?
R82 = ?
Was interestingly optioned without the rear wiper.
Early car so it has the under-dash harness, but does have the pad for the fusebox in the raintray.
Rear sway bar.
Previously owned by MswmSwmsW from the Audi Fans mailing List. California car all of its life what I've been able to find out. MC1 swap was done by 2Bennett in the early 2000's at their old shop. Pretty much the entire 034 20vt catalog was ordered but the car never got running well and MSW parked it for about a decade before posting it for sale in 2016. My friend Rudy purchased it and got it running well, swapped in some brown seats, and then sold it to me. It required me to sell both my project diamond silver '83 UrQ and my 7A swapped CGT, but it's a running driving UrQ and a rust free chassis to start with. It still needs some obvious cosmetic work, but that can come later. The car will eventually get an AAN I've got sitting around, but for now I'll keep it running and work on the 07k 968.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Rudy delivered the car to me in late September and I had 5 weeks to try and make it road worth to make it to Battle Born Quattro 2018. Keep in mind the car sat for around 10 years and only had a few hundred miles on it in the previous couple of months prior to my ownership.
Noted issues and fixes:
No dash lights - Hardwired the entire cluster to remove the foil circuit board; fixed a hacked late dash upgrade
Fuel gauge not working - Found working late GT spare, painted the needle to match the UrQ needles
No BOV/diverter installed - Installed Tial
Unknown age of timing belt/fluids - Timing belt, waterpump, plugs, coolant flushes, etc
On my maiden voyage the day after delivery, I drove the car to a local cars and coffee a few miles away....and she got a ride on the flatbed home. I would later find out I had a MAP sensor in the IIc ECU fail. Replaced it and it fired right back up.
As delivered:

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Dash wiring was pretty nasty from a previous conversion. Fixed all of the crimp connections and duct tape and then upgraded the cluster by removing the failing foil circuit board and hardwiring all lights. Found a fingerboard that had the same spacing as the stock connectors so I could plug the cluster into the factory plugs.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Upgraded the headlights. The projectors are much deeper than stock headlights, thus won't work with a factory airbox. Just barely clears the filter on the GT2871R setup

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Painted the valve cover, added some heat insulation, wrapped the downpipe, and installed a turbo blanket. The black of the exhaust wrap only lasted a hundred miles or so until it started to burn off and turn white.
Also installed the lower ducting for the rad and oil cooler.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Sunday evening on the driver to Sean's for a BBQ I noticed the alternator wasn't charging. This was a brand new alternator that I had installed a week prior. In hindsight I shouldn't have changed it, the previous one was doing just fine...just looked old. Randomly Rudy had a spare in his trunk that I was able to swap on in Sean's driveway.
Had a stellar sunset and took some pictures...more to come

Headed out the next morning and things were going great for about two hours until I smelled some coolant and saw some steam coming out of the hood. Found the coolant feed line had been sitting too close to the manifold and had melted a hole in it. Tried to wrap it with some silicone tape and clamped the lines, but it would still slowly leak. Thankfully had spare coolant and water and it wasn't a big deal to limp it the remaining thousand miles.

Somewhere near Boise, ID my radio randomly shutoff. I kept trying to turn it back on and nothing happened and figured my cheap radio had died. But then I noticed my voltmeter showing 17-18V! The alternator was overcharging due to a failed voltage regulator on this spare alternator. I pulled over and swapped the voltage regulator off my dead week old one and that solved the issue and I continued home. A little further down the road I noticed a corner of the hood flapping and found one of the hood latches had vibrated loose. Thankfully I still have the safety catch installed. Tightened it up and continued home with no more issues. Even found a little snow near Mt Rainier.

Wipers were pretty slow so I started researching motors. Found that the mk3 VW one looked really similar so I bought an aftermarket one on Amazon for around $30. Backing plates and connectors were different but the same pattern so I was able to swap the original B2 plate/connector onto the new motor. The rest bolted right in and the wipers work much better now!

I ditched the turbo blanket after about 7 minutes, too. Once It started smoking
Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Feels odd to say as I have no experience with them in an automotive setting but, as a steamfitter, I'm not a fan of wraps or blankets. The chance for grit to get trapped and act as an abrasive, not to mention moisture retention which could lead to premature corrosion.
Think you'll go with a DIY coating, like Cerakote? Stuff looks intriguing compared to more spendy coatings like Swain.

I did DIY Cerakote on my 7A snakes header. I didn't really have a before/after but not sure if it really improved things, but it did look better. I've heard good things about Swain though.PRY4SNO wrote:Feels odd to say as I have no experience with them in an automotive setting but, as a steamfitter, I'm not a fan of wraps or blankets. Nice to see another EFI 20vt around, even if it is planned to be changed...
You should notice a small difference with the MC2 cam change. You can also run a late NG cam, they are the same except for the vacuum pump lobe.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Grabbed a 7A alternator bracket so I could relocate the alt to the driver's side so I'd have more room for a larger intercooler on the passenger side. Also allows me to run the much more common newer alternator style.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Scored a good deal on an MTM reverse intake which will be very useful when I eventually go 20vt. Also came with a brand new S2/RS2 MTM intercooler and support bar which is cool but unfortunately not useful for this.

That is a nice piece! Would love to see this stay 20vt, but I know thats just not going to happen.

Re: Alex's 'New' '83 UrQuattro
Yeah. It'll be 20v for a while unless something breaks. Honestly if E85 were readily available in my area I'd probably consider building a higher HP 20v for it over a 20v swap. But the nearest station is a 35-50 minute drive one-way which certainly isn't worth the hassle and it's at least the price of 91 oct here...sometimes even $1-2/gal more!!!!DE80q wrote:That is a nice piece! Took it around the block to make a quick video of turbo noises because those are fun. Beat the snow by a few hours, she's safely back in a warm garage.

I think I do have one on here, I'll have to dig it up. My main one is over on Rennlist.com and has become the conduit for everyone working on 07k 9xx swaps to post.Grillage wrote:I love me some Mars Red.
