Cool,
Glad no offense taken, its been one of those weeks so I was a bit testy in my post.
I totally get the drag only cage thing if the car is purely drag race only Aaron, and yours is perfect for the job at hand. Just seems to my Mechanical Engineer mind that a road car with a drag cage is more of a liability than a safety feature. That is a seperate discussion though and I don't want to pollute your thread Zerb.
Keep wiht it and keep posting, I will keep adding my own stupid opinion :bashtard: feel free to tell me to shut up
FYI: The geometry in that last cage pic is all wrong
Unsupported bends in the main hoop (door bars should connect at the bends)= door bars connect too high, main hoop diagonal running the wrong way (should connect behind the drivers head as that is the most important part right)

as far as the cage geometry, its nowhere near finished, so dont you worry. its the exact kit that aaron has in his coupe, same company, same measurements, and his looks pretty....so im sure ill be just fine.
edit: that last pic is my friends car, and he made that cage himself at a local shop with a pipe bender.
aka.....
if its wrong, i cant see it from my house.

hahahahhhh Thats funny
Your buddies cage looks good, just the geometry could be better. I guess my point is really that if you are going to the effort of doing the cage, do a bit of digging into cage design as some small changes can make all the difference, and could get you a lot closer to having a multi function cage. Aarons cage is perfect for his drag race only use, but his cage wouldn't pass inspection for a track day vehicle. While you are building yours, if you think you might like to go and do some roundy round stuff as well as some drag stuff, then it would be worth making sure the cage complies to those regs too.If it will never see any track other than drag then copy Aarons as his is perfect for that.
If you have questions about roundy roundy feel free to PM me.

yeah, i see so many different designs, and stuff. i would like to incorporate some other cool looking stuff into mine, but it is wasted energy. i built it to do one thing only. pass NHRA. and hope it does
i would definitely be doing some different stuff if it were a multi-purpose race car. i'll just build a hill-climb car next year....
i wanted to do the rear bars to the strut towers, but was afraid of tech..... did not know if it would be legal for what i do. but i do like that style.... and the diagonal bar in the hoop instead of the two bars ("D") going to the floor. lateral support yeah, some.

i am building the thing with the purpose of going fast in a straight line and just being good fun to take on occasional spirited drives on the street/backroads.
and hopefully this weekend ill have the other a pillar bar in and the dash bar so then i can go ahead and put the dash in and start on that stuff in there.

im sure aarons will hate these cause they are not proportional one side to the other, but the drivers a pillar bar i wanted out of my face, since ill be driving the car....the passenger bar, f-it....cause ill never be there, lol.

note the pile of schit atop the car.

well, got the dash bar in on the cage the other afternoon, which only means one thing.....its dashboard time.

so, the idea here is....to bond those brackets to the dash, then ill have a panel of ABS plastic to put in front of that, and ill have all my gauges there and such. the way i will attach the things to each other.....velcro, at least thats my plan cause thatll make for quick and easy removal, we'll see how it goes, if not...there are other options.
i tried to attach those brackets with some marine adhesive, which i thought would work....but it hasnt seem to come out as well as planned as of yet. so, does anyone have any recommendations on attaching those brackets to the dashboard? adhesive wise

well im about 6'2" and i thought there would be enough room when i made the bracket earlier, but once you mentioned the helmet thing, i got nervous.....and actually went downstairs to double check, and it all fits. there is enough room to fit my hand between the helmet and the roof, but not much more then that.
and the seat on the floor. i feel like you would look like a 2 year old trying to steer a car with the wheel being that high up like it is.

helmet above which bar? the halo? or the main hoop?
on second inspection here. when i went to check earlier with my helmet on, i was kinda sitting way way upright....aka....no anywhere near normal sitting position. on second check, there is much more room then i thought between my head and the roof, still not crazy amounts of room below the bars, but a wee bit.

lol, ya...i gots that.
i think ill be fine. like i said, when i initially checked it i was sitting straight up like a board, as in i was in a position that i would never literally sit in and drive the car

got the block back from the machine shop and decided to put it in the car while i wait on getting the crank back from them, and the head ill be using. spare head i had laying around went in the car so now i can make my rad support, intercooler mounts, get all my fuel lines ran, fuel rail, yada yada yada. then pull it all apart, paint the bay and put it all together. (hopefully, lol)

so i didnt really like the pot metal mount that i got in the beginning of the project all that much, so i decided to make my own for the passenger side, and i will be doing the same for the drivers side as well. i wanted to incorporate the delrin mount thats already there, cause i do want to have an ever so slight amount of comfort when this thing is driven on the street.

they were for the passenger side yes. the drivers side plate that i made as well i needed to bend a bit cause the mounting points are on different planes. in fact on the drivers side the bottom two point are on the same plane, and the two upper ones are both on different planes relative to each other, so that plate needed to be bent from the top to the bottom, and then i put a bushing between the plate and the blcok to take up the space for the other mounting hole.
ill post pics once that other mount is done.
