Audi 20v Crank & Rod Bearings?

Post by captaincatfish »

I've got an Audi 3B engine I'm rebuilding and my machinist says I've got to grind the crank and get 0.010 inch (or 0.25mm) undersized bearings for the rods and mains.
Do most 2.2L 5 cylinder older Audi engines share crank and rod bearings?
I haven't yet found any bearings listed specifically as 3B 0.010 undersized bearings yet, but I do see bearings for the JT 20v 2.2l engine.
I also see different materials available, A series aluminum, H series tri-metal, P series tri-metal. So being such a newbie, I'm properly confused as to what I need.
If I have to, can I use different materials, like, A series aluminum for the main bearings and P series for the rods?
Does anyone have any tips on how to go about this?
The engine will remain in stock or near stock trim/power level for the foreseeable future.

Thanks!

What happened to cause a re-grind? Honestly, they almost never need this. I'd get a different crank. Most should work either crank or bearings, 7A, AAN, NG, NF, JT. Stay away from the earlier MC/MC2 turbo cranks, they had smaller rod bearings. Then you can get coated, hardened bearings and such.

I'm getting ready to put together (another) 1.8T for my B6, and in looking at rod bearings Mahle/Clevite have quite a wide variety of bearings, specifically they have an option for .001" increased oil clearance. I'm thinking that would be a good option for overall longetivity; what are everyone's thoughts?

The re-grind was necessary because the engine had been sitting for maybe a year, and had taken on some water, so one crank journal had a bad surface on it. The others, and connecting rod journals were unscathed.
I probably should have gone for a different crank, but I already asked him to just go ahead and re-grind it :\
