01E throwout bearing in an 016?

Post by 88a5tq »

Has anyone used the metal faced TO bearing for the 01E in their 016 equipped 200 20vt yet?

My plastic-faced TO bearing didn't fare too well even for only 20k miles of abuse. I got the 0B1 141 165 bearing from ECS for $15 and as I was installing it, one of the securing tabs broke off so they're sending another over. However, I just realized they could be drastically different by design. I thought I should post up the depth of the 01E bearing (1.329") vs the 016 bearing that 034 provided when I purchased my SB clutch from them for the 200 20v (1.302"). The 016 is obviously used but I measured at a point appearing to be unaffected by the wear pattern.

I don't have the 016 bearing's part number but I do have the 01E's which is Ss 01E 141 165 B. The p/n I have shown for both the mc and 3b motors for 1991 is 0B1 141 165 as per ETKA. I think its pretty up to date in terms of software??

The mc bearing is on the left and the 01E is on the right. The backing plate/sleeve is slightly different in depth also.

Anyone used this 01E bearing successfully on the 3b with stock 016 trans yet? :guns:

Looks like you have two different manufacturers TOB's there. One is metal faced or just has the plastic dust cover removed? FWIW the 016(torsen) and 01E/01A all use the same TOB pn# 012141165E old pn# superseded to 01E141165B 01E141165 01E141165D 0B1141165

Sweet thanks very much Austin! That is exactly what I was looking for :)

034 says run it and return if there's a problem. I didn't even buy it from them hahah! 034 has said this to me before I think also. "Yah let's see what happens lol"

The metal faced one is made by hamburg-technic. The plastic one is sachs.

Not to confuse this any further, but didn't the 016 have different clutch forks for the torsen vs locker cars? The depth was different from what I recall. It may have been to due to different flywheels, but something to keep in mind. The TO bearing may or may not have been different.

Yes the locker 016 used different forks>TOB>slave cylinders and dished flywheels. The locker throw out bearing bear no resemblance to the torsen TOB and are also used on air cooled VW's.

I called ecs and they're giving me the stock INA bearing at no charge since I'm waiting forever over here. I don't want to mess with this anymore I guess. Lots of other stuff to think about for the car. It's plastic faced on the INA but oh well.

Just got the new INA bearings and it's slightly deeper as a whole unit! I haven't measured yet but I'll see if the plastic face comes off at all first

INA:
Feels VERY heavy duty. Plastic face seems more dense than my original 034-provided sachs unit. I like :)
1.331" depth if you measure only to the inset face area for the PP fingers. Corrected depth from surface to fork retention surface is 1.015" as well.

"Fingers" crossed :D

*Just a heads up, everytime I measure these I get different #'s haha. Oh well I changed them in the first post anyway
