Short deck 2.6L love!!

Post by type85 »

So I've been running a "Eurospec" 2.6L shortdeck (and probably short rod) 2.6L for several years with a tweeked/ported/big valve 20v head and a 276deg. Schrick, 034 eFI e85 blah, blah....

See here for more info: http://www.theprojectpad.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1738

I've verified that it's definitely a shortdeck, but not a 2.3L block, someone suggested it came from South Africa? "Audi-engine AAY, 2480 ccm, 100 kw Petrol only made in SA": http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72559

It has brutal midrange torque, but runs out of breath at 5,750. It's in a 2300lb fwd. car that I rarely drive on the street, mostly track (as you probably figured from the pics).
Anyways, I wanna put a 20V head on it, I know that means I'll have to change the pistons.
Also, before anybody says anything: NO TURBO!!
More importantly, what kind of work should I do to the head? If I dropped it off at big Hanks shop and got the CNC porting done... what else?
I know that having a long stroke engine with a ton of rod angle affects tuning, I figured the 20v will let that bottom end breathe way it wants to!

Just (over the last year) built the same engine - yes, they are SA blocks that were put in the Vanagons there.
See viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2014&p=80132&hilit=vanagon#p80132

Yes, you are correct that they are "short block", but taller than the 7A etc. blocks.

I came to the conclusion, after many iterations, that I had go go full AAN accessories with that block - IF you want to use the AAN intake.

I't running, on VEMS, but I'm chasing a bad sound....

Any idea what the rod length is? Are the pistons/pin height compatible with any VW pistons? (I want to run flat top pistons so i can run a 20v head)....
