Hmmmm. Is it time?
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
The fenders were cut up last time I glanced at the old urQ. What are doing to rectify that by March?

Darin, the fenders are being widened just a hair to get 255 r comps in comfortably. Also going on is a different groupe A bumper and thrn a sport quattro grill and lights. This will allow a hair more room for heat exchangers and routing I want. I though about going full LWB but i dont have the heart to cut up my clean shell.
Matt. Yes, that is the plan. I really need to finish thr 07k devel and put this project to thr masses. We have more employees now and the capacity to knock this out
Marc, i think i want to run a harness to the trunk on thr Urq too. I like that in the TTRS

Things must be going well if your car gets an honorable internet mention
Hope you get to walk some TTRS guys soon!

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
Just mostly want it driving this spring getting data instead of being a car in the corner. The interest in 07k is high but I ethically dont feel good saying it will make 1000hp without actually doing it. So yeah that is the plan.

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
So, we have set Fridays and then Saturday mornings as the "URQ days" to get a push on the process. "doing it on our spare time" has not made a car run in 2 years, so we are just going to knock it out.
We worked on the front end today and turbo/downpipe.
First the front end. I want more front end room, plus I want more airflow . My car was a little tired from a minor previous owner fender bender. I ordered a Group 4 front bumper, a sport quattro front grill and some SQ head lights. The end goal is something like this.

I'll post more on that tomorrow, but we started cutting and modifying the wider SQ grill today to make it happen. ONce that is in place, I'll set the buckets for the lights with frames, then weld them in.
Next was a header and downpipe. This will allow us to make the heat exchangers, oil/water lines, exhaust, intake/filter, and also situate the oil filter/cooler.
Turbo is EFR 9174. I decided to make the header with an external gate as I want to run the larger 1.05 and 1.45AR housings(shown), and they are not available IWG. I really want to be able to run the 7163 without a spool valve at road race events, so I'll just need a different downpipe for both turbos. No big deal really. The 9174 on a spool valve on a 2.2L is a lot of fun, though it is too much compressor at a .92 A/R with the valve closed. This makes it surge pretty bad. You can drive around it, but I think the 1.05 will be in the sweet spot, and 1.45 will be massive 850whp fun with full boost ~4400-8500 on the valve. See with BW turbos, the scroll ratio is 65% when closed, so a 1.45 will act like a .94AR and a 1.05 will act like a .68AR. I think there is a chance the 1.05 won't surge, as well. but a .92 at .59AR was too much on the Mule.
Tons more plays into surge, such as low end VE, which the 07k absolutely destroys the 2.2L on an aggressive cam, so it may just get away with .92 on a valve anyway. Only way to find out is try. Matchbot helps, but it is too close to the surge line to make a definitive call.
Hope to finalize the endcaps for the radiator tomorrow so I can get them cutting on the CNC machine, then order an intercooler core for next friday.
Enjoy

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
I'm guessing with the big turbos you're not going to be using the small dia header right? What did you figure it was good for, ~600 whp or something?
Oh. And I LOVE this plan and progress!

Love it, no such thing as spare time! (or money for that matter)
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
There are 4g63s making 800whp on 1.25" schedule 10 manifold headers. I think 1.5" is close to overkill in all mortal situations on a 5 cylinder. Probably will offer a small diameter ur20vt header this soring as well

Hank... you magnificent bastard. Keep it up.
Any plans to offer a long radius bend manifold similar to a Peter G. manifold?

Can't wait to see this back on the road again! Glad to see it getting love.
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
What are the performance benefits of a long runner vs short runner header? I assume it is analagous to long vs short ram intakes?

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
Long tubes typically just allow for less harsh bends that kill velocity and flow. The downside is they typically don't package anywhere, and the added runner volume makes them have later powerbands. They do theoretically make for more turbine efficiency though. IMO, it isn't enough gain to rationalize on 99% of the builds.
