Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
Re: Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
Why do you need the engine back in and running? As long as the fuel lines, fuel rail are all intact you can do it by output test in VEMS with fuel pump on (which you can jump in the fuse panel, at least in C4s). Even stock injectors... Run each for a minute and measure output after. Hopefully you see less fuel out of #3.

That only opens the injector 100%. I need rpm signal to actually simulate the injector driver working at different duty cycles. Unless there's a way to tell it to output a specific duty?
Re: Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
Hmm yeah that's right. I don't think so but I'd have to look into that.

There's definitely a way, but maybe not with vems. If I was there I'd try to set up a testing package for it with hardware and software. It's not very complicated from a hardware standpoint. Pretty much just a relay and a dac.

I actually have an old megasquirt stimulator. Maybe I can get that thing to work somehow. I figure just doing the testing running will also work since I'm getting closer. Engine is now out of the sedan.

Re: Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
Ok guys, I need some help. Avant is up and running well which I am very happy about. I am being extra super careful this time around with tuning and some things aren't making sense to me. Wideband and dutycycle on the injectors would indicate I am running WAY rich (I am playing it very safe to ensure no molten aluminum happens) and the plug insulators are white like brand new. No signs of detonation.
Background:
VEMS
R8 red coils
BKR7E plugs
Deka 870's @ 3bar currently
Walbro 450 F9000267 in tank
IROZ K26/EFR6758 kit
Stock intercooler
It's tuned to ~24psi on 93 octane right now. I have the AFR hanging around. .72-.74 and the injectors are around 50% when power comes on and up to about 75% top end. Between the two (AFR/duty) it would indicate a very rich mixture. I'm also watching EGT at the turbine inlet. During a 3rd gear pull it ramps from 560c to 820c. Plug insulators are icy white like brand new. Around the threads are black. All plugs are consistent to each other looking nearly identical. No audible indication of detonation nor visual on the plugs either.
I have swapped WB02's and both were recently calibrated as well.
Timing is SUPER conservative hitting 7deg boost onset and 12deg top end.
As scary as it sounds, I never really read plugs before on my other cars. Not nearly as carefully as I have been now anyway. So I can't even confirm what a proper big turbo plug would/should look like.
I'm nervous to lean it out to my normal target of .79-.80 with fear of what happened last time. Especially with how the plugs are reading.
Insight? Thoughts?

Re: Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
My thoughts would be to back boost down for a while. Your description of the plugs is good, but pictures wouldn't hurt. Does the power level seem appropriate for the boost you're running currently? Were you ever able to test injector outputs? I'd be scared to run it hard before doing that.
If it were me, I'd back boost down, but lean it out and read plugs. Things won't be nearly as susceptible to melting at lower boost and the plugs should be easier to read. Where is the timing mark on the plug ground strap after a hard pull? Remember, you can't really read plugs properly when they've been run in multiple conditions.

I think that will probably be the best plan. Run it at the current wastegate spring (~13psi). Lean it back to .79ish and see how the plugs look with some miles. From what I gather, on E85, plugs don't turn brown ever. Just always look new. There is probably still some E85 in the tank from back in the spring when it blew up though quite diluted now. I'll keep putting miles on it with the boost low. Man she scoots though! I'm seeing 23-24psi around 3500-3650 and it's feeling just like the sedan used to if not better!

Yes, the carbon build up makes that 'Coffee' color if i'm not mistaken, so with e85 it's not really something you'd want to do with an eye. I've seen it takes a while as well to become fully colored too.
What you should be doing if you want to really read the plug, is get a magnifying glass and look at that. Specifically you are looking for pitting in the sparkplug electrode, that really can only be seen with a magnifying glass.
Glad to see you are taking it easy! Set up is killer.

Video would be cool
What FPR are you using?

Currently on a stock FPR only because my 7A one sprang a leak. New one is in possesion and I will change that out at some point.

Re: Nick's 1991 200qa "Project" - "R4CEW4GN"
016 = boom last night.
She was tired though. When I got the car there was no fluid in the thing per the usual input shaft seal leak. Changed the seal and fluid but it was too late. It made some serious whining that would change in pitch based on the gear/speed. Def final drive related.
Last night just rolled on it in 3rd, BANG and revved up like in neutral. Clutch feels normal and goes into all the gears fine. Willing to bet it's the pinion or ring gear on the front diff. Either way I'll be pulling it apart on my days off (tomorrow and tuesday) and dropping in the spare unit. The spare is a very low miles unit that was in excellent shape when I had it in my sedan before the 6 speed swap. It does need a 5th gear synchro though. So I'll be pulling that apart and replacing that as well.
