oil pump failure

Post by ur.carlito »

Hey guys I have a 93 urs4 with 180k for miles and I was wondering if you guys can help me out with a little situation that I'm going through with the car. The car starts up fine now the oil pressure I know it's supposed to be at 5 bars at startup and at normal temperature that should go down as low as 2 bar, when it does it continues to drops lower than that. How often does the oil pump fail on these cars and how can I be certain that it has failed.

It's quite rare, especially at "low" mileage like 180k. How low does the oil pressure go?

It goes lower than 2 bars after that i shut the car off. I really don't keep it running long enough to find out if it goes any lower than wat it showing.. I mite have a video I'll look for it.

Holy crap that's good to see! I go as low as 1.5 bar when it's at the hottest my coolant shows. I think that's when the oil temp gauge is just a smidgen over 60 C as well. That's the hottest the ever goes for me though and my turbo has a PTP volcanic blanket also.

Not trying to jack the thread. Are you getting an oil pressure warning?

Sounds like you've got nothing to worry about.

Thin oil can also cause low pressure... what grade of oil are you using?

hey guys so i decided to run the car for about a half hour or so and my oil light came on after the pressure was as low as 1bar. it has 20w50 in it not sure wat brand, but im more than positive that i need an oil pump, unless there's something else that can cause this problem. i really dont want to start takin the motor apart unless i have a solid idea of what it could be. any suggestions? if it is an oil pump is there a rebuild kit for them or do i really have to spend the 5 to 700 for one..

Could be a clogged pickup too...

check the pickup tube like Chris said.

I can almost guarantee you the oil pump is not bad. You could have some excessively worn bearings, causing bad oil pressure....but I bet your pump would probably be fine.

Strange that temps are so cool with such low oil pressure? Are you sure your sensor is up to par? I'd check it with a mechanical oil gauge first. What is oil like, is it glittery? Most likely bearings in that case unless it's uncolored alu, could be oil filter or the oil pump checkvalve too but rather doubt it.

What filters are you running? Also if you are convinced it's a pump, swap in a used one. The only failures I have ever seen are on "rebuilt" pumps. The factory got it right, as long as you keep it below 8500 RPMS;)
