Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
Well it looks like a combination of the last two things I did may have been the ticket, but its also not as hot out today as It has been. So time will tell.
Got a lot of air out of the system with opening up that 1/4" bleeder line. The system responds very well now to the fan being kicked on with the new shroud.
So next step is to swap either my goos used cluster or parts from that into my cluster and get some miles now. So i can enable my boost.

Get the boost turned up and you will want to keep it!
At least enjoy it for a bit before you swap it for a UrQ

I would love to get a URQ but I don't know if I ever will with the prices they've been selling for lately. Hopefully so. either way I have lots of other projects that I look forward to working on. I dont know if I am off base on price or what but the amount thats gone into this car is ridiculous. So if someone doesn't offer me a price close to what I'm asking I might be "stuck" with it.

Tonight's project, fix the odometer using my parts cluster I just got . I was very specific about getting one in good shape with intact plastic but the jackwagon that sold me one didn't add barely anything around it so it broke during shipping. I still got my gears but I'm not happy about the packing job.
So anyways, here's what I found.

Got the good gear transplanted into mine and clocked the mileage forward what I think I drove this week "roughly".
So... built engine at 179,036.

Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
Still appears that I'm a little bit behind on cooling. With the air bleed line, new thermostat, new fan shroud and high capacity fan It hit 80 degrees out again and Im not able to keep the temps where they should be .
Tried one last effort to just be sure, pulled and replaced the water pump.
Here is one advantages to the serpentine belt. I can have the water pump out in about a half hour's work.

Here is the unit that was in there, not the mose efficient looking impeller design but looks to be in good shape. The impeller does not spin independently of the puller and it appears to be in place. Nothing visible in the engine block.

Warmed car up, burped coolant, later went for a test drive. No change

So, unless im missing something stupid, at this point I'm about convinced that I just need a bigger radiator, maybe a dual fan setup like Jim is running.

Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
One last thought... The signal to the coolant temp gauge comes from the G62 sensor in the back of the head , not the MFTS in the water manifold... Correct?
Edit: Ah, found it.
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/cooling.html#gauge
So it looks like My gauge actually runs off the "multi-function temperature switch". The one last thing I havent replaced yet. I still believe the car is running on the hotter side of things but it may be worth a try. if i can find one...

Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
It should come from the MFTS, the one on the back of the head is for the ECU.
So is your fan constantly running? When I look at your setup, I feel it needs as much of a shroud as possible between the radiator and motor. Even if you can get a 2-3" lip on the radiator to keep the air from going around the backside. That's definitely the path of least resistance and unless the fan is running, that's probably where most of your air is going. Then the fan is also sucking in hot air from the engine bay from there. That radiator should at least be able to keep up with normal driving.

Be sure to get the Behr MFTS not Meyle or some other off brand. Those will cause the gauge to read higher than the Behr unit.

What does vems say for coolant temps? Be nice to have a 2nd opinion.
Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
It just seems weird. I'd try an MFTS as well.
My AAN in the 4k with stock old 4kq rad with no shrouding never ran hot. Or at least not as hot as what you're experiencing, Pat. Yes it's a bit cooler up here, but in an hour of stop and go at the CDN/US border @85F, barely running on 3 cylinders while eating coolant, it got hot, but that was about it. lol

Are you basing the temp soley on the gauge position? That gauge position in the photo looks completely normal to me.

Verified it with VEMS and is reading right on with the gauge. The 100 C or so pictured isn't too bad but the issue is that it will continue to climb if I let it.

Jim, the coupe did sell but only to make room for something else audi related

The new owner is an owner of one of the first eS2's ever done on this side of the pond. His goal for the black coupe his 700 HP and he has an 01E 6 spd with a tdi 6th to go in it.

Right on. Glad to see you staring another project. It seems a lot of people are running out of steam with these old cars.

Jim, starting an '83 ur-q in alpine white. Some of you on here may have remember hearing me talking about finding one... Well I did and the timing couldn't have been better
Also have an old truck I am working on, learning how to do metal work and taking a break from wiring
Was going to put a cummins in this but I may do a v8 instead.
Also, FWIW, I actually much prefer working on the older cars than the newer ones, and I havent run out of steam yet on them. I have had quite a few B5 S4's and the one that I have now is probably one of the most well sorted ones around, suspension, brakes, engine wise, and daily drivable. That said, even when i'm driving around in this extremely built B5 I am dreaming about ur-quattros, 4000's, 80/90/cq's with inline 5s. I have actually been considering selling the B5 for a long time now. Just havent had anyone ask me to sell it to them yet

That is a sweet old rig, looks like you have some metal work in your future. One of those 4cyl cummins would fit better than the 6cyl. Scrap an old breadvan and save the drivetrain for the swap. I like the older stuff too!

I actually have the 6 cyl. , it's an ISB, 215 hp. From a Matco tool truck. But I would have to do some serious work to the frame! Or just find a donor frame.
I have a shrinker, stretcher, and a bead roller to use to get my feet wet on metal work!

Yes sir!
Leaving Texas tomorrow, heading up here. With a lot of spares !

Re: Pat's 1990 CQ - AAN / GT3071R / VEMS
Nice job on grabbing Bufkin's UR. Very jealous of the euro bumpers you're getting with it. I pulled my Alpine 83 out of Texas also...believe it or not over five years ago now. I've got too many sticks in the fire, so it's going slow but I'm at least reassembling things now. I really need to update my thread as I'm certainly beyond where I last let off...My plans are similar but slightly different.

Looking forward to updates on your new project.

You know what's funny is your URQ the way it looks right now resembles what i'd like mine to look like someday. I have alot of projects going on as well and I really want to take my time and do this one right. Hope you get some time to keep going on yours soon!
