Snagged the condenser
Plates came yesterday. Still a sigh of relief that the title and everything is all in good order now.
I'll hopefully get the AC sorted out here soon and start looking into the health of the engine/suspension/brakes.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Been a bit, so its update time.
Got the AC condenser in, but still a no go on the AC. The car appears to have been converted in the past. After attempting to fill the system with R134 I got the compressor to stay on, but the radiator fan wasnt kicking on like it should when the AC is on. I've checked the relays but am a bit confused. Any idea why it wouldnt kick on?
Been driving the car around more, and it really is a decent one to roam around town in. Suspension stuff needs replaced due to age, but aside from the AC, everything works. Having XM in the car makes it enjoyable on the highway.
I did think the car deserved a tuneup, so I tossed new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and voltage regulator at it this past weekend. The car ran great before but seems to be improved now. We'll see what kind of mileage I am rewarded with (first recorded tank was 20mpg). I forgot a fuel filter, but that is en route.
From here I'll be driving the car casually on the weekends and cleaning things up (engine bay is dirty). I also need to check the timing belt and other general components (brakes, suspension, etc), as I have not really poked around all too much yet.
I figure this winter I can start acquiring engine swap parts. As usual I'm always on the lookout for red leather goodies

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
No problem! Planning 20vt, which will surprise many. I loved my old MC1 4ktq and I love CIS, but a very mundane RS2 20vt set up is what I am after. I want a solid daily on a factory'ish engine management. No fussing with tuning, etc, just turnkey
. I'll do this right, so it will take time. It would be sooner if the car didnt need paint. In the meantime I'll enjoy driving it this summer/fall, but it will not see snow.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Considering how expensive/rare RS2 turbos are now, have you looked into something more modern with a Motronic tune from Marc?
Maybe something along the lines of an EFR6758 or an HTA2876?

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
If the tuning exists for them and is solid, I would do a billet K24, billet K26, or Volvo something instead of the RS2 for the rarity/price reasons mentioned.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Oh right on. A billet k24 with a tune from Marc would be a sick daily setup. Have you found a motor yet? It wouldn't take much twisting of my arm for me to sell my AAN.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
I would have mentioned the k24 hybrid and k26 billet turbos as well, but from what I can gather they're somewhat... unobatnium.
While more expensive overall, the turbos I mentioned would fall in about the same CFM range and be more responsive.
A Volvo or Holset would be a suitable cost-effective option, especially using a machined KKK housing on a stock manifold.

Mikey with a big turbo 20vt? Glad you have seen the light! Agree that the rs2 is way too expensive and hard to get.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Good insight, fellas. I'm open to different turbo options and would possibly consider a Motronic tune. As long as its turnkey and still has the failsafe'ness of OEM, I'll be happy.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Small update.
A little over a month ago I noticed accidentally how hot the headlight switch was while driving at night. I'm no stranger to this but in all the years of owning these things I never had a headlight switch plug fail. Mine did! I got home and the passenger side corner marker and tail lights stayed on. The car sat for a few weeks before I got to work on it. I ended up adding a relay to the parking lights and tail light circuits.
Next up were headlights. I bought a set of H1/H4's not long after I bought he car so I had an excuse to install them with the proper relayed harness. Got those in along with a better passenger side front trim piece. Just waiting on some better headlight adjusters and then I can wrap up the headlight trim and enjoy.
A few other small things are an OEM radio with working radio display light and a better OEM shift knob.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Got my headlight adjusters from across the pond, so I took some time to install those. Kind of a pain since the screws were all stripped, but I got them taken care of. Will be adjusting the lights this week!!

I dunno about all that
. The 4kq is clean but paint is awful. Its a great base for a project though. It will sit out of the salt and crap for the winter, which makes me happy. The 90q will hopefully make its way to a new owner once I find a replacement for it.1986 4kq Commemorative Design

LOL! Believe me, I want to! Seeing Wiley's car makes me feel at home since its been to Carlisle a handful of times. Maybe next year I can either fly or make a trip out of it by driving out.

You have seen mine... Needs body work and paint. Hopefully I'll be starting on that after the new turbo and ECU go in.
I love your attention to detail. I just don't have time for that right now.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Almost had things buttoned up last weekend. Was adjusting the pass side low beam when I ended up popping off the lower metal clamp that goes over that adjuster. Guess I was trying to adjust it too far out. Pulled the headlight and fixed that. Got all the trim and interior back together tonight. I'll work on the dimmer once I order LED's for the interior. Car will go into hibernation once winter hits and will only be used IF needed, so I'll toss my snows on just in case. Looking forward to start accumulating 20vt parts.

Re: Mike's 4ktq project
Happy New Year!
With the sale of my 90q and acquisition of a B5 A4 2.8q, I figured I would share a small update.
Nothing as exciting as other project threads here. Hopefully (and finally) deciding on what engine route I'll go soon. Until then the car remains solid and driven a few times a week. I did finally change the oil for the first time since buying it a year ago. The old filter had a year date of 2011 on it, yeesh. I'll likely do a full timing belt service in the spring time.
I randomly came across a factory option radio on ebay and couldnt resist, and who could for 10 bucks? This unit came in the original box, with radio code, and all documentation! It was never used. Works great and is a nice addition to the OEM'ness of the cars I prefer to own.

I am saddened by the sale of the 90, but I like the OEM'ness you stick too. Think this will make an appearance at Carlisle this year?
