What's the limit of a stock 1.8t

Post by scubadave »

So, as far a HP and TQ, what is the conservative limit of these engines? I know it will handle a K04 just fine, but much more than that? I have always been more interested in the 5 cyl, but picked up an A4 ultrasport as my daily hammer in January and I'm toying with its possibilities without going hog wild. I am not looking to make it into anything more than a reliable DD and Autocross car. My bigger HP addiction is held at bay by my coupe.

I ask because I just picked up a used K04 and text'd Hank if he wanted to entertain the idea of playing with billet possibilities on it, but has not yet replied. If he were to do it and gain an increase like on the K26/24, would the stock rods handle it?

I've run a 28rs at 22psi on a stock aeb with no issue. Was fun.
current:
-mk4 tdi wagon with some mods
-TDI b3 90q, holset turbo, be strong little connecting rods!
-the turbo tractor
past:
-11 second 90q junker
-20vt swapped 90q winter beater
-efi 20vt 4kq
-way too many other long gone urs's, 200's 4000's, b5's

rule of thumb on an all stock 1.8T is around 300 tq, and 280-300 hp. revs become the issue for more power at that point but rods are the main cause of failure at these levels.

drop in rods are the next step, then valve springs and aftermarket exhaust valves make the step after that; the intake valves are fine upwards of 500 or so.

my entry into the 1.8T world was an all stock motor with a 57 trim running ~325 whp with standalone.

my $0.02 is always free.

The one thing to keep in mind is 1.8Ts have zero balls down low with a big turbo on them. A GT28 series does nothing below 3500rpm depending on sizing. This is relevant as the Ultrasport has that 6MT with ultra long gearing--plan on having to drop 2-3 gears to get going on the freeway. The uber short 5spd B5 gearing is actually not bad with a big turbo.

I actually didn't want to go past a k04 to be honest. For having to wait for spool, its about as long as i was willing to wait for. I'll have to check the code on the trans, I thought it was an 01X. Either way, I was getting an unusual whining with spool, so i figured i would check the turbo to be sure what was going on. Sure enough....

I should have checked the turbo when my brother bought it... well, its my problem now and is down till I find a k04 to put in.

A while back my brother linked me a video that made some sprawling statements about Frankenturbos, and how they're just rebranded Chinese knockoff turbos.

Not that I have an axe to grind with Doug, he seems like a good fellow, but if there's any validity to these claims, one could just buy one of these off Amazon for cheap and save a ton in the process.

I would be lying if I didn't say I spent all of about 3 seconds pondering one of those Chinese wastes of time and money before saying "Fuck that shit!" It's too bad cause they're damn cheap.

I would rather build my own frankenturbo out of my k03 hotside and turbine/ k04 center and compressor. Anybody think thats a bad idea?

I understand where you're coming from on that... but the reason I posted in the first place is that the vast majority of people have been having success with Frankenturbos. Doug even warranties them, after (allegedly) putting some lipstick on those (sweet and sour) pigs.

Not everything coming from China is garbage. I've heard some pretty reputable people say that knockoff TiAl housings are good products.

Just some food for thought.

On the other note, I think experimenting with the wheels is a pretty good idea if the costs line up in your favour.

My girlfriend has an early 1.8 a4 (aeb) and I'm trying to figure out how to make it more drivable on a budget. The 50 hp gain from a tune isn't terrible but I'd like it to have a little more grunt for passing in the mountains and whatnot. I'm wondering how a k24 7000 would fare on a 1.8...
