Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
Hey everybody, new guy here. Picked up my s6 from another Quattroworld member a few weeks back to get her back into shape and start a build. I've got a ton of questions on build options and personal opinions on building by stages but more on that later.
I've been working for BMW for a few years now, lol. This is my first obd1 project I've ever taken on, let alone being an old Audi so I expect to have a good learning curve. Ive owned a few vws and daily a mk4 gli. Otherwise, previous cars have been a 338whp wrx and a bolt on s2000 that I plan on selling at some point to help fund the s6 as the build progresses.
First and foremost, my biggest concern about the car is that I've apparantly discovered the dreaded steering rack mount crack as pictured. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it as I can't seem the locate the thread the s2 guy created detailing his fix. My idea on this was to just have it taken care of whenever the engine comes out since I do no welding myself. Other than that it's mostly bad mounts, seals, gaskets, and misc electrical things inop.
To start things off the car is mtm 1+ with silicone boost hoses and ls2 coil kit. 182k miles. My first plans going down the build path are along the lines of doing a turbo/chipset from 034. Particularly the 3071 with a Wagner manifold and turboback. From there I figured I'd focus on suspension and brakes before tearing into the engine and going bigger. Opinions?
Thanks for any input guys,
Ryan

My buddy thinks he's the shit for suggesting goof off which btw works wonders more than goo gone.
Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
Nice car, welcome!
Are you going to reapply the clear bra? I think they're nice to have before they get old like that.

Welcome!
Another good option for similar power level to a 3071 with better spool is an EFR6758. You can get a kit thru either EFI Express or IrozMS.
Looking forward to your progress.

Glad you found your way here, there is a factory repair part for the rack mount. It is somewhere on Quattroworld. I'd save your monies for an EFR setup and an 07K swap if you really want to get serious. Where are you located?

Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
I wasn't planning on reapplying the clear bra, they for whatever reason didn't cover the trim under the headlights or the headlight washer covers so they're chipped to hell and for the amount of struggle it has been taking it off. I never want to do it again. I have roughly 12 hours total time in it and I still have the entire front bumper to go so I'm guessing I'll have over 20 in it by the time it's done.
I will definitely look into the efr kit as I honestly haven't searched around too much since I know I'd like to go even bigger sometime later in the future but figured a nice mid 300whp would hold me over til the rest of the car was ready for bigger power.
I had no idea there was a factory repair kit for the rack mount so I will definitely jump on that while I'm taking care of all the other crap. Hopefully when I get back from training next week I'll start ordering the maint items and various mounts that have gone bad.
I'm in the Annapolis, MD area.

Welcome to the Pad.
A word of advice: Stay away from the 034 3071R turbo w/ chip set kit. The tune has been known to be less than optimal.
You are better off getting something from EFI Express and/or Iroz.
Sucks about those cracks.

Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
From what I understand the 3071 chip is conservative, which is what I was leaning towards anyway since I'd like to not have to do a rebuild and rods, etc til I go with a bigger setup. That was my reasoning for edging that route from 034. This weekend I'll look more into my options as I'll be heading into NYC tonight with a buddy I found that was also in nj for training last night and I'll be driving home tomorrow night so I won't have any time til maybe Sunday.
Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
I do my best to not bag on 034 too much. But their claimed "350 whp" for the 3071 is utter BS. I'd stick with the k24 until you could upgrade. the kit is pretty expensive for the actual power you get. That was running with a different boost chip too. It had the 034 3071 fueling chip installed, and then the PO had installed a boost chip for an rs2 chipset, and left the rs2 fueling and 3071 boost chips in the glovebox. It was much quicker than with the 3071 boost chip. The rs2 setup was what he was running when I raced him, still pretty slow.

Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
Just do yourself a favor and don't count on any 034 stuff being worth your while. Whether it's flywheel ring gears shearing apart, exhaust manifolds not fitting, engine and transmission mounts breaking, plug wires being totally junk out of the box, flywheel designs being illegally copied, parts that will cut you if you touch them the wrong way because noone there apparently knows how to put a chamfer on a part, parts which aren't engineered at all because 034 doesn't employ any actual engineers, ECUs and tunes which are utter pieces of shit, etc., etc.
The list goes on and on and when the part doesn't work and you try to return it, they seem to have never heard of the problem before, even when just about every member here has experienced the same problems over and over again.
So give your business to someone who is ethical like Marc or Hank at EFIexpresss and Iroz Motorsports respectively. They are good people who are very smart, offer very nice products, and will give you the support you need.
Oh, and that's pretty cool that you're in Annapolis. I am in Baltimore often and make trips to Annapolis randomly. Keep an eye out for my Blue 200 Avant (taking delivery soon). Or if you see a Cayenne Turbo S ripping down the highway, that's probably me too lol

Not I. I wouldn't want to drive the car up there until I take care of a bad pulley it has along with the timing belt. I need to arrange grabbing the special tools and parts from Audi down the street if they have them.
Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
Unfortunately not. I've been working a lot lately, so every minute I have off is spent with family, working on the house, or getting my M5 prepped for sale. I enjoy the first two, the last one sucks, but my wife wants a garage space, and I'm not selling the UrS or the Lotus, and we only have a 3 car garage. I wanna build a 5 car garage soon, but have to sell a car to help with funding that.

Re: Ryan's 95.0 s6 project/build
So. 2 1/2 months later, the s2000 is finally gone, the s6 has moved into the garage, and I can finally begin budgeting out my "build".
So far I have made no contact with hank or Marc but I have been eyeing their joint efr7163 kit with motronic software. The only thing holding me back at the moment is finding an engine builder that has experience with an aan or Audi 5 in general in the DMV/mid Atlantic area and getting a quote. I'm thinking along the lines of just doing a somewhat mostly factory refresh with rods, balancing, 7a cams, maybe coated bearings, and arp hardware. From what I gather this seems to be perfectly acceptable for the <500 club, yes?
I've been finding mixed info on this, and it's the first I've ever heard of it, but is or is the aan not balanced externally with the flywheel? I definitely like the idea of going to a lighter flywheel but I would obviously need it present when balancing the engine if it is indeed balanced with the engine.
Here's the clearbra completely off. I ended up using a snap-on pneumatic eraser in the end because the adhesive was kicking my ass and I was about to go jump off a cliff.

This will forever be my reference/introduction to how our motors are balanced. John did us all a big favour taking the time to post his work and it's a good read:

Good supplemental reading about balancing and our engines:

With rods/bearings/ARP fasteners you should be good up to 550hp on AAN pistons, and more with aftermarket slugs.
