opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
i think my K24 is dying and i dont have anymore replacement K24's but i do have a few K26's laying around that could be easily installed. anyhow, what are you guys opinions and thoughts on the K26 on the AAN? i've read some positive things and some negative things that seem to contradict the positive things. some said its more laggy on bottom end which i understand because of the turbine wheel size difference but it will make more power on top end over the K24. also that the K26 is more restrictive because of its compressor cover and inlet being smaller. so with those few facts im confused, will it hamper the performance, make a gain or simply shift the power band up higher in the RPM?
i also know that there was a couple different versions of the K26 that came from the 20v turbo cars and im not really sure which mine is but it did come from an 86 5000 turbo sedan.
On another side note i took an old ebay T3T04E i had laying around that had a .48 AR exhaust side and just out of curiousity tried to fit a K26 exhaust housing and to my suprise it almost fits. looks like a little bit of machining to the K26 turbine housing and i might have a winner. i've seen guys with K26/T04E hybrid's before but i could never find a straight answer as to what the hybrid consisted of. is it like what i was trying to do with a .48 AR garrett wheel and modified KKK K26 #6 housing, do they somehow use the whole K24 turbine wheel/shaft in the garrett center and KKK exhaust housing? there are so many ways to approaching the assembly of that hybrid turbo but i know there has to be a simple way that someone has already figured out.

Hybrid generally uses a T3 wheel in a Turbonetics KKK replica housing (made to fit the T3 wheel with KKK flanges)

Some hybrids use the complete T3 with just the KKK housing machined to fit it. My hybrid is a little different. It consists of a Porsche K26/6 turbine shaft, Audi K26 center section(just to keel the lines stock for oil and coolant), and a turbonetics T04e compressor wheels and housing. All fits together, no modifications.

How did you bolt the turbonetics/garrett backing plate to the KKK center? the 4 bolt holes behind the compressor wheel dont line up at all, i tried this combination with my stash of blown turbo parts.

Re: opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
Mine bolted right together. It is possible you need to have the old style compressor housing like I have. Also, from what I have seen, it is possible that only the turbonetics housing fits. I believe they used a smaller bolt pattern than the other manufacturers.

Re: opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
I should mention that I am not the original builder of the hybrid. I purchased it unfinished from vt10vt. A friend of his started it, and then went in a different direction .
One thing I did notice when I was searching for info on which turbo the cold side came from is that the part# on the housing comes up for the T04b. The problem is the compressor wheel I have matches up to one of the T04e sizes and count. So its possible they used the same housing on the "b" and "e" turbos, but didn't machine out the intake port as much for the "e". I'll see what I have written down when I get home in the morn.

The difference between a B cover and E cover is over all size. B cover is something you would find on a T3 super 60 and the E cover is more like something you would find on a GT30. i have an old turbonetics T3T04B and an ebay T3T04E and the E's cover is way bigger than than the B's cover by leaps and bounds.

Makes sense. I thought I remembered reading the "e" was the smaller one.

Re: opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
The E is the big one, me a friend got into an argument over it one time lol. i thought the B was the big one and he set me straight.
anyhow i've come to find out there was 2 K26's that where put on audi 5000's. one had a small exhaust/wheel than the other. the one i pulled yesterday has big wheel and housing and the others i have here are small wheel and housing.
Here's the info i found on a porsche forum about the K26's and their difference.

Here's the info i found on a porsche forum about the K26's and their difference.
The first one is for a 1984.5-1985 Audi 5000T, 2.1 L 20 valve engine (8.3:1 CR.) The KKK part number is 5326 970 6412, and it consists of a K26-2664 GA compressor with a K26-6.91 turbine, ~1.95" turbine outlet. First of the Audi water-cooled K26 turbos. The Audi boards refer to this as the "small" K26:
The next one I found is for an 1986-1989 Audi 5000T/200T, 2.22 L 20 valve engine (7.8:1 CR.) The KKK part number is 5326 970 6411, and it consists of the same 2664 GA compressor with a larger K26-6.95 turbine with ~2.20" outlet. The Audi boards refer to this as the "big" K26:

Re: opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
Its possible the small one is the one I have for sale. It has the small turbine, but is water cooler. I had assumed it was a late Porsche version. Either way, it uses the same exhaust housing that we Audi folks want when you upgrade to the Volvo K24.

Re: opinions and feelings on K26 with AAN engine
i put the big wheel/housing K26 on today and i have to say i like it. laggy on the bottom end but it feel way stronger the whole way to 7500rpm.
