Geez Marc, you know how to make a guys hart jump a beat or two. Even though it's not my motor anymore I still feel it an extended part of the familey. I started to feel faint but glad to have kept going & read that the motor was OK(you should add a Phew emoticon).

But let me see if I can understand. So the starter teeth were extending past the flywheel teeth & binding obviousley on the top of the flywheel & couldn't return cause of the binding?[/quote]

Yep

?, if you make up a spacer for the starter will you need longer starter bolts?
& why did this happen?

the starter bolts I'm using are already long enough, no biggie there. I only need about a 1/4 spacer (which will put the starter fairly close to the oil filter, but not touching.

Had an impulse buy on an FMIC tonight, I really liked the design, vertical flow, dual in single out configuration:

Nope, Its Turbo Time! Pulling the heads when I suspected valve damage sealed the deal.

a whole different kind of 'going for broke' :(

Alrighty, another weekends worth of progress. Thanks to Nate for getting me a set of extra headgaskets and other goodies real quick-like :woowoo:

I installed ARP 16v VW headstuds and stacked gaskets

Pulled the oil pan(s) and drilled/tapped for the turbo oil drains. Man, theres a lot of freakin bolts holding the pans up...

drivers side drain:

Passenger side drain:

I'm a little nervous about the passenger drain in the pan. Its really close to the oil level when full and I'm concerned about potential restriction in the drain line while cornering, etc. Apparently Nate hasn't had any problem with this(?)

oil supply line:

I also sealed off the nipple facing rearward on the drivers side valve cover to give more clearance for the master cylinder. The red powdercoat came out pretty good too:

Now I just need some manifolds and turbos :)

I was determined to get the engine bolted back up before I left. I didn't get outta there until almost 10:30! Sorry I didn't stop by last night, YGM.

i'm planning on sticking the drain in the boss above where you put yours in, in the block instead of the pan.

looks great though marc!
